Smokey Mountain Citrus

elkhills says…

My fav of the bunch. Its a long cut and packs like my old stuff Skoal Mint. Feels comfy & familiar, which I guess is both good and bad. Arctic Mint has a good flavor, but I like Wintergreen better. I think its like when you switch to diet sodas; you can tell diet Coke ain’t the real thing… but Dr Pepper, or Diet Orange or whatever flavor you’re not used to ain’t so bad. Yeah, its kinda like that for me. And I’ll admit I bought a roll of Grape – it tastes like Kool Aid, who doesn’t like Kool Aid? A warning: Smokey Mtn tastes the sweetest of the bunch and contains a lot of molasses (sugar) so beware of tooth decay. I’ve ordered some SMC Mint Pouches to try, they were out of Wintergreen, I can comment after they get here if anybodies interested.

Robert Spurlock says…

SMC Winter green Pouches:

The flavor was consistent with spearmint chewing gum. Not bad there. As far as the pouch goes, it felt like I had a snus pouch in my mouth. The pouches are dry and about the same size as Skoal Snus pouches. Because of the dryness, there is no spitting–the product just doesn’t produce spit. There is no “kick,” “bite,” or “sting” from these pouches. I liked the feel of the pouches in my mouth and found that I could put them in various places (upper or lower lip, either side) with ease. The flavor lasted a long time (I held a pouch in my mouth for nearly two hours as I drove between Knoxville, Tennessee and Chickamauga, Georgia). The biggest problem I found was with the can, itself. The thing is just too hard to open. I found this problem to be true of all of SMC’s cans that I’ve tried.

SMC Cherry:

The flavor is more like a cough syrup or something to that effect. It is nothing like the Skoal Cherry Blend that I’ve always enjoyed. Having said that, I like the flavor but it is a little too sweet. SMC is made from corn silk, so you get a lot of the strands floating around in your mouth. One other note is that the product tastes kind of “earthy.” You almost get the sensation that you have grass in your mouth. The only time I have ever experienced that sensation with real dip is with Skoal Peach. The look of the product is very much like any long cut that I’ve tried whether it be Skoal, Longhorn, Grizzly, or Cope. You can pack the can just like any of those products and it feels just like any of those products in your mouth. The big difference is that there is no “sting” or “bite.” For those who enjoy spitting, this product is definitely for you. It produces a lot of saliva. Now, the juices are completely safe to swallow–SMC’s products are made from food-grade materials, but I prefer not to gut dip juices. It just doesn’t seem right. The draw backs are the can being difficult to open and the fact that the product is very sticky. The stickiness makes clean up a beast.

SMC Grape:

The only difference between the Grape and the Cherry is the flavor. Otherwise, the products are the same in terms of look, feel, stickiness, and difficulty of the can to open. I would liken the grape flavor to that of Kool Aide or something like that. The only “real” dip I’ve found with a grape flavor is Kodiak and this doesn’t taste like Kodiak’s grape. It’s close, but not quite there.

So over all, I would recommend SMC. They definitely have a good thing going. They have other flavors available in both their long cuts and pouches. The products are also reasonably priced, too. At least they’re no more expensive than the Skoal that I used to buy. So to sum up:

Pros:

  • Winter green pouches are similar to snus
  • Cherry and Grape long cuts have similar appearance and feel to real tobacco products
  • Price is reasonable

Cons:

  • Cans are difficult to open
  • Long cut varieties are very sticky, making for difficult clean up.

I hope this review helps someone.

rjc says…

Wintergreen has excellent flavor and lasts a long time, straight is similar in flavor to Cope. Product is moist but gritty and very fine, pack is adequate but takes some getting used to. (The superior flavor is worth the difference in Hooch to me). The Wintergreen is really good, my overall favorite. Plus, I can buy it in my local Walmart at $2.85 per can.

TrojanScott says…

A close runner up to the champion who I’ll get to in a second. I like SMC better than I did the first time I tried it. This is made of corn silk and other stuff, and it has the same type of consistency of long cut dip. The straight was pretty good, but the wintergreen was even better to me, especially when I poured a cap full of Jack Daniels in it. Taste lasts a bit longer, and I found that out of the three types of herbal I tried, this one was best for spitting. Clean up after dipping? This one is worst. The little slivers of corn silk or whatever are EVERYWHERE, and difficult to get out. No way can you look like you weren’t dipping this unless you have access to a gallon of water, beer, soda, whatever. Also seemed to stain the teeth a little more than other brands as well.

  • Taste: B
  • Consistency B+
  • Clean up: D
  • Spit factor: A
  • OVERALL: B

Smokey Mountain Wintergreen is OK.. The one thing I do not like about it is the molasses they use in it.. It is sticky on the fingers and I am sure that it not good having that sugar plastered on your teeth.. Managed to keep my teeth after 24 years of chewing, do not want to cause problems now..

I never had an issue, what I used was made from mint leaves and helped with the oral fixation. I still get the urge all the years later from time to time to want a dip but I remember how rough it was to quit for me. Different strokes for different folks

Ive been dipping since 1975 and recently quit using the wintergreen and mint. Tried cherry once and it reminded me of cherry skoal which i wasnt a big fan of. I would love to try peach but it cant be found in stores around me. Im a big fan of anything that can get me off my nicotine addiction because i didnt think i would ever quit. Im on the wintergreen long cut now and i enjoy it.

Looking for alternatives since I quit dip, I stumbled across these. I chewed punches so I grabbed the wintergreen and mint flavored pouches. I was caught off guard on how dry they were in the can, but surprisingly they do last a long time. I like them a lot and will stick with them

Having be a slave to Skoal Fine Cut Wintergreen for 38 years, I naturally gravitated towards the Wintergreen flavor from SMC. The flavor is pretty solid and long lasting and the consistency of the herbal snuff is not bad to closely mimic the real thing as far as feel in the lip. The only real slight negative I have with it is that it is a little too sweet for my liking. I actually cut down on the sweetness issue a good bit by mixing the Wintergreen SMC with Hooch Spitfire regular cut.

Can someone please tell me if Smokey Mountain pouches are safe when you’re pre-diabetic or diabetic…. thanks so much

Don’t know if this is too late, but I’m a pharmacist (and stupid enough to have dipped for 10 years…) but I don’t see any problem with these products in a prediabetic patient. They’re sweetened with xylitol, which is a sugar alcohol, so they should not cause a significant increase in blood sugar.

You are better off quiting cold turkey because herbal snuff is worse than the real thing. Look at the side effects of kudzu Root witch is placed in most tobbaco free snuff. I tried it long term and the side effects are fever nausea and gastritis. I would get pounding head ache and then throw up. I call bs on herbal snuff being a good alternative. Grinds just make your hart race and doesn’t allow you to sleep.

Me too, I feel worse on this stuff than I did grizzly. I just quit cold turkey. Smoky Mountain would make me sick and stomach pains after a couple weeks of using.

I am looking into a chew substitution for my dad. He has been chewing for as long as I can remember (Copenhagen Long Cut) He was put on medication from his doctor to try to quit but does not like the side effects. I figured this would be a little easier of an adjustment for him. I need some help choosing what type to order him for a test run. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The classic is what I use and I too was a cope long cut freak. Sometimes I will add a little cayenne pepper to increase the burn. Love it and the Smokey Mountain chew is the only tobacco free alternative that I can enjoy!

I quit Grizzly and looking for an alternative that I can get in stores (in Illinois). I like to move the dip from side to side. I like Smokey Mountain, but seems a little thick when trying to move it from side to side. Any suggestions?

I quit after using Skoal for years. Fortunately for me, quitting tobacco wasn’t a big deal. The only thing I struggled with was wanting to chew something. I don’t want gum and candy as those are worse than chew on your teeth. I elected to give Smokey mountain a try as I’ve heard the commercials on Sirius NFL radio forever (Randy White version) I ordered the tester 5 pack online. Not impressed with a free test that cost $2 a can with shipping……but that’s here nor there. Impatiently waiting I was in a Walmart and they had two styles, classic and straight. I cannot come up with a clean version of what I thought of classic……the only thing that comes to mind is that Geico commercial with the coons where one tells the other he has to try something, worst thing he ever tasted like burnt hair and chetney or something. Classic taste so bad you might vomit. I’ve dipped for 20 years, it never once bothered me or turned me green. In 5 seconds I thought I was going to throw up in my car the second the classic hit my mouth. Terrible is a polite way of saying it would rank somewhere between a mix of horse piss and wet grass. The straight wasn’t nearly that bad, but it isn’t anything I spend the kinda money they charge for it. I mean, it costs nearly as much as a can of Skoal does and taste like crap. Not a great motivator to quit for anyone who needs help trying. Don’t feel bad if this isn’t the solution for you, I wouldn’t see it helping many people with all those factors. I’ll await the arrival of the flavors and see how they fare.

Brett,

No sure if you like peaches. I’m not really keen on them, but Smoky Mountain has a peach flavor that is good. Agree with you on both the classic and straight, bot taste like crap. As most have mentioned Wintergreen isn’t bad. Have not tried the mint. The down side to the herbal snuff, I think. It’s like crewing gum, after a minute the flavor is gone and you want to spit it out. Regular snuff on the other hand seems to retain it’s flavor for a long while.

I ordered from Smokey Mountain Snuff and got a order confirmation on 11/15/16. Two rolls were ordered and paid for 2 day shipping. Said it shipped on 11/17/16. It was delivered on 11/21/16. So it sit out in the weather for 2 weeks before I got back to work. I have called the 1800-762-2439 contact number and it is the biggest joke I have ever ran across. It tells you the calls will be answered in the order received. Your call will be answered in 28 minuets. Then in 15 minuets, then you go back to 18 minuets, 28 minuets. On and on as long as you choose to stay on the phone with them. I emailed them and they don’t respond. My next move today is filing a complaint with the BBB.

Updated Review on their “longcut” snuff: So I wrote a review a few weeks ago about their pouches and how awful they were. Well their actual snuff is a completely different story. I have a order that is currently being shipped, but decided to check my local Walmart just out of curiousity and because I was am anxious to find an alternative chew. The Smoky Mountain Wintergreen Snuff is the REAL DEAL! This stuff looks, tastes, smells and feels as close to the real thing as possible. I am confident that I have finally found my alternative to Skoal!

Awful product. Have these guys ever even opened a can of Skoal/Grizzly/Copenhagen pouches? I have been dipping for 11 years. The last 3 years I have religiously been using Skoal Mint Pouches. I ordered 5 SMC Mint and 5 Wintergreen Pouches hoping that it would be somewhat close to what I was used to, to make quitting easier. Well I was wrong. These pouches came completely dry. The spitability is 1/10 as the pouches do not produce saliva and does not create brown spit. Worst of all, the pouches are tiny! They are literally 1/3 the size of a Skoal pouch. I dip 2-3 pouches at a time with Skoal so when I got these, I literally had to put 6 pouches in to have the same feel. The taste is decent, however, it doesn’t last more than 10 minutes. I have 8 cans left that I’m not sure what to do with. I’d like some advice if anyone has input. I am not opposed to trying their regular “long cut” if it means its going to be closer to the real thing.

This is day 11 for me without any snuff and I broke down on day 5 and bought two cans, one can of classic and one can of wintergreen. The wintergreen is far better than the classic (imo). I am on my way to being tobacco free after many years of using snuff.

long time Copenhagen snuff user/lower left cheek packer/1-2hr chew time/ no spit

tried the SMC classic, straight, wintergreen and Arctic mint all non pouches

Classic –
The smell made me gag but i tried it anyway. had to take it out at about 5 minutes. wasnt an appealing taste at all. Watch the youtube videos – explains alot.

Straight –
a little different taste, smell then Classic but the same end result.

Wintergreen –
its wintergreen. packs well for about 20-30 min then starts to spread out. it has that “burn” most wintergreen fans want. Sticky but come on, lick your fingers clean.

Arctic Mint-
didnt think i was going like this at all. but i do. i liked the mint feel and i can pack it like cope snuff, gets wet and moves around like snuff in my mouth.

I tried mixing Copenhagen Snuff and SMC Arctic Mint and liked it. but no matter what its not the same thing.

Im still in search of “the one”. Hooch is next on my to try list. hope this helps.

Larry K, I mix Hooch Spitfire, Whisky, & Wintergreen, tastes pretty good. Spitfire alone is hotter than hell, but mixing it with the sweetness of Whisky & the Wintergreen, makes a pretty good concoction.

Does not simulate the real deal. I was avid snuser for 11 years. Problem with the pouches are no juice. Just feels like I have something mild mint flavored shoved in my lip. I ripped one open and noticed it was a powder that becomes a paste once under the lip. Thus the paste does not seep any moisture to simulate the real deal. I also tried the loose stuff which has the juice effect I am looking for, but the stuff is a sticky mess and completely inconvenient compared to the real deal. Also, I am not a big fan of loose to begin with. Maybe would like pouches if the contents were the same as loose.

Im only 19 i started chewing at 13. I used to chew 2 or 3 cans a day of copenhagen and grizzly both straight and wintergreen! It seems like chew was always there when i was angry upset or whatever! That was the hardest part for me to quit is my anger. But i started chewing the stokers tubs cause its much cheaper going through school and work all those years i swollowed my chew and never spit and about 2 years ago i went to the dr cause i was spitting up blood had constant acid my stomach has been in terrible pain to find out i had no lining in my stomach! They told me to quit right away and pay 96 dollars a bottle for medicine. I couldnt afford that so i just kept chewing. I recently have been hurting more spitting up more blood and have non stop acid so i decided to quit 2 days ago and havent had none sense! Im proud of myself but still want some soooo bad! So i dumped all my chew out in the toilet went to walmart and got SMC wintergreen and herbal.. Not very big on the flavor.. Its really nasty i think.. Is there any other flavors someone could reccomend to start out with i like having the feeling of chew in my lip which helps tremendously. But i dont like the taste much any advice? Like what flavor to start with or any other alternatives??

I started dipping when I was 13. I am 45 years old now. I have NEVER quit. Not once in 32 years. I dipped Skoal when it came in waxy cardboard with metal lids. Most of you can’t remember that. I’ve dipped regular Copenhagen over the years as well, and for the last few years, Copenhagen Wintergreen has been my snuff of choice. I dip more than a can a day. In addition to being incredibly expensive ($1500/year), it is killing us fellas. I’ve got 3 beautiful daughters and the greatest wife in the world. Sadly, I could never quit for them. Because here’s the secret: you have to quit for you. Smokey Mountain is a tool. It is not a magic herb that makes your cravings go away. You’re addicted to a drug AND you’re addicted to an action/habit. However, while not magic, it’s damn close. I mixed SM Wintergreen and Copenhagen Wintegreen half and half for 3 cans (2-3 days). Then I did 1/3 Cope and. 2/3 SM for 3 cans (2-3 days). Then, I was done with Copenhagen for good. I have been 100% tobacco free for 10 days now, and I haven’t had a full dip of Copenhagen in more than 2 weeks…after dipping a can a day for 32 years. I have zero cravings now.

Was it easy? Yeah it was actually because I made a decision. Was it without cravings? Of course not, but I only had one really bad day (day 3), and it just is was it is. Deal with it. This tool can help you. Every flavor I’ve tried is great. In fact, I love the Peach. Go figure. This can save your life if you’ll commit to yourself.

Hope this helps you decide.

Beware of the Smokey Mountain Snuff company!!! I used the Smokey Mountain products to help quit chewing, beginning Feb 2015. After ordering monthly and spending nearly $500 on product through October 2015, I decided to order 3 lots of 10 cans each. I expedited shipping so I would be sure to have them prior to a hunting trip. They mistakingly sent all the wrong product. When I called, they apologized and said they could see the mistake was on their end and would send out a replacement product along with RMA# to return what I receieved originally. Well, that was where everything went bad… nothing came for a week. I called back and talked with a different rep who said they mistakingly told me that it was their mistake, but in fact they now think I just ordered wrong through the internet. They informed me they were consequently NOT sending the product, or the RMA they had promised. Apparently, they also had no intention of telling me that until I called back another week later! I could not believe it! for 9 months I had been telling others of their product, placing orders as a regular monthly customer and would likely have provided a revenue stream to them for years. Again, I ordered almost $500 of product from them in 9 months. They completely and unexpectedly treated me like crap and had zero interest in retaining me as a customer! Not only wouldn’t they cover the return shipping, but would not own the mistake in any way, and would not send me the product I ordered in the first place without charging me again! Beginning this moment I will be going out of my way to hit every web site and every review that I can find to let people know what kind of shallow, ungrateful and non-customer oriented organization this is! I really don’t care about the $108…and I really never take up crusades like this, but this company defied every principal of business in owning your mistakes and caring for it’s loyal customers. There is no place for companies that have zero customer service these days. This company can’t be trusted.

10+ years of Copenhagen Longcut 1-2 cans a day. I am currently one week into my quit and regardless of what some people say, this SM stuff has helped me tremendously. Does it taste like my cope tin? No. However, it’s the most realistic fake dip I could find and it definitely helps with the oral fixation. I would recommend it for anyone.

Started chewing Cope when I was 15, switched to grizzly mint when I was in the marine corps and now (im 34 and was chewing about 2cans of griz a day) I decided I needed to quit chewing so my kids would have a father growing up, had a cancer scare in my throat (wasn’t cancer so good thing) and it was enough for me to quit chewing, this smokey mountain has been a life saver for me, the nicotine withdrawls where managable for me to deal with but the oral fixation of chewing was the tough part, this stuff helps a lot. Even though I chewed mint griz I have found I like the wintergreen smokey mountain better. Hope this helps some, if you are thinking of quitting chew just do it, its easier then you would think and it save your life.

Chewed for 45 years – age 10 – 55. Quit a couple of time but kept going back. Had to quit now due to spinal fusion surgery in July – nicotine interferes with bone growth and can screw up the fusion. So the last chew was on the way to the hospital for surgery. I didn’t have any of the first few days nicotine withdrawal because I was stoned on pretty heavy pain meds (yeah, I planned it that way). I’ve used wintergreen SM since. Its been 7 weeks now, no problems at all. I’m tapering off the SM but the hardest thing about quitting is the overwhelming urge to put something in your lip. SM fills that bill and I literally have no urge to use tobacco. Admittedly, I am pretty motivated to quit once and for all.

Ok so far I am very happy with the fact that I started dipping smokey mountain 10 days ago and I really don’t miss my copenhagen pouches. However, to get pouches I have to get mint and they are tiny, I need to have classic pouches with twice the size of the pouch and I will be done forever. I can not be the only person who feels this way.

I was a can a day user of Skoal Straight Long Cut and the SM Straight is a great alternative for me. I have a nicotine test on the 23 and I needed to quit the habit anyways, so I set a quit date and haven’t looked back. So far it’s been three days (OK maybe not incredibly long but it’s progress) and have had 1 bad craving. This really helps with the oral fixation I “crave.” And I’m sure this causes SOME damage to your gums, but what’s the alternative? 😉

I have been dipping since I was 12 years old, I am now 52. Yes I had a few scares like white patched and wrinkly pockets .You all know what I’m talking about.Just waiting for the Doc to tell me I have the bad C word. I tried for years to quit and I really miss the feel of it so I always end up buying a can after a week or two of quitting. I found Smokey mountain over 6 years ago and it was the only thing that helped me to quit smokeless tobacco . I can go without Smokey mountain all day when I have to without a craving so I know its not addicting. Thanks Smokey Mountain.

I appreciate all ur reviews on here. I am in the process of getting serious about chewing pouches, and this was great info to help me make my choice on what to use.

Been dipping maybe 4 years. Brand is grizzley wintergreen. In 4 years I’ve gone 3 days going without and avg about 1 can a day. I want to quit but the addictive personality I have along with the addictive ingredients makes it impossible for me (that’s my lame excuse anyway). I’m gonna give this wintergreen pouch a try. Have half a can left. Once done I will go to Walmart and hope they it it. To all who have quit, does this work?

Hello chewie, ive been surfing this website and see that you have a lot of input and time invested in this mission of quitting. My question to you is about smokey mountain, after reading tons of reviews i will be trying this product. Does this product cause any gum ression or tooth decay like my beloved copenhagen. Also since it is tobacco and nicotine free there shouldnt be an issue with life insurance blood test right? Thank you, please send a copy of your reply to my email chubbuck773@yahoo.com if you have time thanks again.

Shane, I hope that you are still quitting. I too was a Grizzly long cut winter green chewer. I went through about a can every day and a half. I also chewed off and on for about 20 years. I am using SM wintergreen at this time and love it. I began my quit by using 4mg nicotine gum for 2 weeks. I then bumped down to 2 mg nicotine gum for 2 weeks. I have been “nicotine” free for over 2 weeks now and feel great. I have a beautiful wife and kids and want to be around to enjoy all the memories. You can too.

I have dipped Copenhagen for 23 years. I didn’t like the Smokey mountain natureal or mint or cherry. But there is something about the peach that really distinguishes any cravings.. I have been quit for 7 days now. Only had 3 major cravings!! May just have saved my life… Fifty gold stars

I’ve tried everything under the sun baccoff, grinds, hooch there is nothing like smokey mountain it actually taste good unlike theses other products that taste like crunched up leaves mixed with chalk. Please don’t learn the hard way sm is the way to go from the beginning. It’s flavorful, full, and makes you spit probably the closest thing you’ll get to dip without the tobacco. The only downer is that you have to order online can’t find it anywhere where I’m from.. Just order 10 cans because shipping blows…

Hope this helps
