What To Expect When You Quit DippingSo you want to quit. And you would like to know what it’s like. We’re not going to pull any punches around here, it’s tough. That’s why we’re all here.

Days 1 through 3 – Pure hell. You will walk in the fog. Nothing will seem real. Your brain is wondering where the hell its fix is and it is going to punish you until you come up with it. 72 hours, that’s all you need to get the nicotine out of your system. This is where you start to deal with the physical withdrawal associated with quitting dip. Drink lots of water. Read, post, read and post. Don’t take your anger out on your loved ones. We always tell everyone………Make this quit about YOU. If you quit for your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, kids, mommy or daddy, you will resent them during this period. Quit for yourself and come in here to rant. Yell at us. Bitch at us. We can take it. We’ve been there.

Days 4 through 20 – Here comes the mind games. The nicotine is out of your system now. You will still have some physical things to deal with.

  • Cravings
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Constipation, gas, stomach pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore tongue and/or gums

Yep, you have this to look forward to. Your brain is rewiring itself. It isn’t used to being in an oxygen rich environment. Your body is responding in kind. Everything is a mind game now. All the cravings you have are actually due to triggers. Triggers are events where you are in a situtation you would normally dip in. Mowing the grass, playing poker online, playing golf, working on the car………you get the picture. Keep drinking water, use seeds, the fake stuff, whatever you need to keep the dip out of your mouth. Remember, oral fixation is part of our habit, something you will eventually need to break. For now though, use all the tools you have.

Days 20 – 50 – You’re winning. Life isn’t great, but you probably had a couple of nights where you actually got some sleep. You might notice you’re going to bed earlier than you normally do. Not staying up to get in that last dip. You may notice some sores in your mouth. You’re thinking, “great, I quit dipping and now I have cancer.” You almost certainly don’t. Your mouth is healing itself. Tiny ulcers you’ve had for a long time are healing. We recommend you visit your dentist around the 30 day mark. Don’t be a pansy, just do it. He or she will be very supportive and they can explain the sores much better than we can. Don’t let your guard down. Don’t go out drinking with the fellas or the girls. We also recommend that you don’t drink for at least the first 50 days. Drinking is a huge trigger event and it weakens your resolve.

Days 50 – 70 – Cruise control. Life is really good. You still think about it, but this is good stuff here. Some people may suffer anxiety attacks during or a little before this stage. Some doctors say we dipped to relieve anxiety anyway. Some people can push right through this, others need a little help. Talk to your doctor before you quit or immediately after you quit. They will know what to do. Some give Wellbutrin or Lexapro. Lots of people in the support community take or have taken these medicines and can help you with the affects. Don’t wait till you get to this stage of the game to talk to a doctor. You’ll cruise through this stage much easier if you know how to take care of the anxiety or at least know it’s coming.

Days 70 – 90 – Late term craves, the doldrums, the blahs, the blues. Some people end up feeling like they are right back at day 1. The fog, the haze, the craves. It can be a tough time. You need to let people in your group know this is happening. Time to circle the wagons to get through it. It usually only lasts a few days. Fight through this and make sure your order your HOF Knife or Coin. Here are a couple of articles about this time period which we refer to as “The Funk”

Days 90 – HOF – Houston, resume the countdown. Enjoy the hell out of these last 10 days. You will be celebrating with your group as you all enter the HOF. It is a great feeling and an accomplishment you should not take lightly. Do something special for yourself and your family. They put up with your sorry ass for the last 90 days and they deserve something too.

100+ Days – Stay vigilant. Use the tools you have, to continue beating back any cravings or urges. You will still experience dip dreams and longings, but you are fully qualified to beat them down. Continue to post roll with your group. Get into the newer groups and help somebody out. Pass it along. Live the dream.

  1. im 192 days in. I had several throat issues so far in my quit. My throat felt like something was stuck down by my voice box. This issue comes and goes still, but is becoming less frequent, and weaker as time passes by. I thought for sure I have throat cancer, and I have been to the ER, and had all the test ran. Turns out nothing was wrong, and most of it was in my head.

    1. I am 79 days quit after 30 some years of abuse and have the same issue. For about 3 weeks it been sore then settled around my adams apple. Been to doc twice for it and they found no issues but I do have a standing referral for ent doc visit. I also wondered as it made no sense to have issues now when I never did before. Other then the throat it still feels like week 2 with craves, weird pains, fog, anxiety, depression and wicked headaches. One day it will all be gone but it is amazing what your body gets used to. It will get better and we need to stay strong. Best thing I have done was join this site and getting closer to God as he says “cast your worries on to me”. God bless all who are fighting the good fight to stay clean.

    Guys,
    I am feeling awesome. I am really glad I took this path. Just wanted to share a note of thanks to all my mentors here and a very special thanks to my close quit buddies here (JayP, Jeff, DDD 🙂 ).

    Just a shout out to all the warriors here. There were many many days when I just wanted to throw out everything and go back to nic bitch. But I stayed. Thanks to everyone here. It took me sometime to get it inside my head that there is no “normal” as long as I am addicted. There is no real “pleasure” in taking them.

    P.S: I have issues with anxieties and along with depression were my biggest challenges during the initial days. Folks, who have this issue, I can assure you it gets better. Don’t look for the day when it will get better. It will happen slowly for surely. You will see the difference when you look back in your journey. I still have some occasional anxiety issues (depression is no longer there after 150 odd days.. yay) but is lot, lot better than the starting days.

  4. Hey everyone, not new to the site but I never officially joined the forums when I quit. I was 800 days quit and had a slip up this past weekend (1 can on Sunday night). Now im at day two again. I feel like I never even quit, I have every withdrawal symptom I was experiencing 800 days ago (after just one can this time). Is this normal or just in my head? I feel like I’ve undone two years of hard work with one careless night. Shows that you can never let your guard down I guess.

    1. After 25 years of dipping, i quit for 99 days, I had a relapse and continued dipping for 4 more years, I quit once again and of course I had all the bad symptoms. I am not sure if the withdrawal symptoms are as bad if you only do it for one day after being quit for a long time, but whether it’s normal or not I’d rather not find out because I caved. Last night I had an intense craving, so even at 577 days or more you still get those craves. They do not occur as often as in the beginning, but they do happen. Hang in there Jim, the good thing is that you’ve gone through this before and you know what to do.

  5. 22 days today !! Clean and free !! No can. Thank you Lord!! Been a tough journey last few weeks. I quit cold turkey April 26. I have had all the withdrawal symptoms, sore throat and dry mouth and throat were the worse, mental fog to that was tough. Still fighting it a little but I am improving each day. That’s how I look at it, as if I am recovering from an illness. Finally had a few nights of decent sleep, first two weeks the night sweats were terrible and terrifying. I know I still have a ways to go but if I can do it so can everyone else!!! My heart rates have slowed and blood pressure has been more stable since I have been free of the can. I had a 5-6 can a week habit. Last time I bought any was April 18 that lasted till the 25 of April. I had been wanting to quit for a long time and decided that this was the time. I quit for my Lord and for me. I didn’t realize what a grip the can had on me, wow it had a hold. Now that I am free, what a blessing!!

  6. Hello all. I am a twenty year dipper. I have two weeks now but I am getting myself all anxious thinking about throat cancer. I have what felt like a scab form in the back of my throat that has gone away but I still have this hacking cough (not corona). Is this normal for the first couple weeks? Not hard to swallow but just always feels like I need to fought something up. I appreciate the help and wish everyone the best.

    1. I’m going through the same things. Almost exactly. 20 year dipper and all I can think about is that I’ve given myself the ugly c word. This community is awesome though from the posts I’ve read. So helpful knowing you and I are not the only ones going through this. Keep your chin up and the dip out yer lip!

    2. Hang in there Mark! I just recently quit it’s day 18 now. I have had a sore throat and cough once in a while. The mental fog has been the worse. Days 1-3 were hard but 5-8 were even worse. Spent much time in prayer those days. Day 16-17 caught me out of the blue it was like starting all over again. I had quit cold turkey, I didn’t step down at all. Went from around a can a day to nothing. It was rough but so glad I did!! Stay strong and hang in there all, this can be beaten!! Freedom from the chains of the can.

    3. I have had a similar issue of persistent cough and it was a combination of the irritants from tobacco and a dust mite allergy. After about a month of quitting and taking fluticasone before i sleep, the cough is gone. Good luck

  7. Hi, day 6 it think with everything going on i lost count..been a nicotine user for almost 4 years. I had my first dip dream last night was so mad myself thinking i gave in quickly but thank god it was only a dream..is it normal to have joint and body aches and i get cold and hot easy. My mind kept playing games so i gave all my bank cards to my sister since we live together n told her my problem n not to give to me and if i needed something she can get it for me or go with me to get…its not fan but told myself everyday you feel like hell is another day without it and eventually it will end it wont last but if you go back to it the thing it dies to your body will last and even kill you. So keep going forwad. Thanks for the support its gud to know am not by myself.

  14. I’m two days in. I’ve dipped non-stop for 36 years and was so addicted I would put a dip in before I went to sleep. I’d wake up and put a dip in. I’ve never tried to quit before now because I’ve never wanted to. I’m ready and determined to get this vile monkey off my back. Thank you for the encouraging website. Very inspirational.

      We all where you’re at. I was there, same boat, falling asleep with a dip in…first thing in the morning. First thing before and after meals.
      You just gotta get tired of it. It can be be done…I did it for dam near 30 years myself. I’m almost 6 years clean. If I can do it…any one can. Good Luck!

      I was exactly the same. I would also wake up and take a dip of cope almost every nite. I was addicted to cope and loved it. That was over 5 years ago when I decided to quit. You have found the right place for support. It’s not easy but many of us have made the journey. My advise is to keep busy, read and post as often as you can. You have just started, don’t give up as the first step is the hardest. Each of us had a route to take, find what works, and give yourself victories, if you made it three days. Good job. Get to a week. The a month.

    4. Congrats Shiva on the 4 th floor I’ll be on the 3rd in a few days. I have a question for you vets. I have recently been feeling pretty down last week was rough and I ended up going to my primary care for a checkup ( first one since I’ve quit ) I told him about it and got to talking about my anxiety. He gave me some stuff to try and help manage it. I’m kinda apprehensive to take but I have been taking it for the last few days. Just feel super tired and lethargic. What’s your guys opinions on these things ? Did any of

      1. BigD,
        I didn’t take them during my quit, but did before I quit, for almost a year. When I quit, I felt it again (anxiety) thought it was coming back, but it was just short termed and only was “spotty” from then on. I’d say the first 100-200 days, were my toughest days. After that, I could manage any symptoms pretty well. I got on meds about a year before I quit Nicotine. I read a lot about anxiety and other mental ailments. I found a book called “at last a life” (poorly written) that I say was my break thru and started me on the road of getting away from the meds, weight loss and ultimately, free from nicotine.
        What I can tell you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with medication. I was in a bad place and needed a crutch. I can also tell you, is that something that may work for me, may not for you. They ALL make you tired….and zoned out. I think they are designed to REALLY calm you down. I stopped and started 4-5 different ones before finding a fit.
        I’m not a doctor so take my advice with a grain of sand. But don’t shy away from the meds, even if in just in the short term, if you need some help. You need a healthy mentality to be physically strong 👍

          I had major issues with anxiety. If you look into my past posts, you’ll see anxiety and depression were wreaking havoc. The first 30-60 days were horrible. Never want to go back. I realized I always had anxiety issues and I masked it to an extent with nicotine.
          Depression was much better after 100 days (now I have none) but still had issues with anxiety even well past 300. What I noticed is though the frequency and intensity of the episodes gradually diminished after 100 days. It might be difficult to see it on a daily basis but let’s say if I compared it from 100 days to 200 days there was a lot of difference. Even now I get some minor episodes but it takes a lot more to rile up me and I have a better handle. Sometime around 70-80 days into my quit, my wife and I decided I need medical help and was about to book an appointment. Somehow, it never happened and after that I didn’t take any medications. I came here and posted a lot. In some ways, seeing reassurances from my friends here helped me big time.
          But as JayP said, there is no harm in taking consulting a doctor and take the right help.
          One thing for sure, when I look back, I clearly realize I had lot of anxiety issues when I use to dip and smoke and I took nicotine to mask them. I no longer have them and it is very very rare for me now.

  18. Hi everyone Day 53, and it was a bad one. Heart palpitations all day, head fog. and then the worry about the fist two things. I play the game in my head is this because of the quit? Am I using the quit as an excuse to ignore something bigger that is wrong? and then that vicious cycle spirals and that doesn’t help at all. I sat here and read through everyone’s posts over the last few months and that does help. Stay strong, we can all get through this

      Hang in there, I know I had some anxiety, and reading past posts. Other did also. It’s part of the journey. The fog and anxiety will go away, takes some time, just keep going forward.

    2. Jeff is absolutely correct Greg, the early part of the quit is chucked full of ups and downs. Hang in there, it DOES get better. Go for walks, runs, lift some weights, try staying away from the junk food (I know it’s hard). Water is another friend, drink lots of it. Flush that junk out of your system. If oral fixation is an issue, don’t shy from some gum, sunflower seeds and a some non-nicotine dip. There are plenty of tools to get you through it. Keep at it, show yourself who’s in charge!

    3. Hey Greg listen to these 2 guys, they been quit for a long time, I started with them and caved in, but when i came back they coached me pretty good. I am now a year and a half quit thanks to them and others in here, but the biggest battle i had to fight for myself. Like us you can do it and you will do it. Don’t let the little nuisances of the beginning get you down. Stay Healthy.

    Hope everyone is safe and doing well health wise and on your quit. During these stressful times, it would be easy to give up our quit wouldn’t it? Think of yourself as a sword. You are fine in peace times, just living day by day complaining about the little things and hanging out inside the sheath, but during war you are tested to the limit. This is our war, not only to the outside elements, but also the formidable stress inside of us. This is the time to show yourself what you are made of. The master swordsmith that created you with fire used the best elements and techniques because he knew there would be times like this. Keep fighting the good battle.

  21. Hey every just checking in today is 279 for me. I feel like I’m still grinding it out odaat, is everyday miserable !? No not everyday but I will say it feels like most days have been pretty shitty since around 200+ ish. Did anyone experience this long into the upper 200s ? You guys have helped me so much reading these posts and stuff. As cal has said some people feel great after 50,100,200.. I however feel better than earlier in the quit but some days are still just shit. Just didn’t know if any of you other dudes experienced it up here? Hope everyone is well

      Congrats at 279! Odaat is the only way to freedom, keep on keeping on. Me personally, I think around 250ish things really calmed down…for me..I see others who are still battling things where you’re at. So everyone isn’t the same. Eventually (and maybe you’re there), most days become better than others, instead of “some”.

  22. How long did everyone have a sore throat? I’m about 5 weeks into my quit. and I recently have started getting a sore throat. It could have nothing to do with quitting but I was curious. Also my tongue has a sore/kinda funny feeling to it anyone else have that?

    1. I had a sore throat/ mouth for about 2 months ish then it started to go away. Remember you’re body is rebalancing without dip.

      No,I personally didn’t have the sore throat/tongue….but I have seen a few out here with similar complaints. Like I’ve told others, we are all different and experience different things…for different periods of time. This site has so much good info for people quitting…it was my library during the first 3-400 days of my quit.
      If things get too rough,go see a doctor. We’re out here sharing symptoms but can’t diagnose symptoms. I’d say what you’re dealing with IS something others have had (not myself) and part of the long list of symptoms associated with the quit.

    3. Hey Greg – I had sore throat and tongue issues for weeks into my quit. Couple that with what I refer to as ‘crawling jaw’ where my jaw was tingling and felt like it was going to crawl off my face and I was a wreck. The good news is ALL of that goes away with time – keep fighting!

  23. 1 Year and 14 Days

    Hello folks,

    It’s been quite a few weeks of hectic work and travel and couldn’t get much time to post. At least no more travels with COVID. I just came back y’day and have to wait and watch if I am developing any symptoms. Hope I do alright.
    JeffJ, DDD, JayP, Cal, Carey – Hope all of you folks are doing good. I am just catching up on old posts and see you veterans are helping out the newbies a lot.. Wonderful. Will do my bit in the next few days.

    Some strange pangs are coming may be once in a week or so. Otherwise I am doing pretty good.

      Hope everyone is hanging in there with the virus, here in southern Cali, pretty much lock down, but it does give me time to work on the classic car, my yard and some other jobs the wife gives me. Only reason I mention a few of these as. … in the past. All triggers for a dip. Now it’s not on my mi nd.

      New quitters. Keep the fight.. don’t give up and you will win
