Symptoms of Quitting Dip and Chew

Symptoms When Quitting NicotineQuitting dipping is not an easy thing… if you’re like most of us, when you quit you’ll go through some withdrawal symptoms… These are completely normal. That being said… if you are concerned about a particular symptom, by all means go to a doctor and get checked!!! This will help both your peace of mind and may catch something before it gets serious.

Dip Dreams – you’ve been dipping for years sometimes decades. Your brain is used to thinking a certain way with a certain amount of nic in it… once that’s taken away many people have “dip dreams”. These dreams range from mild to incredibly intense. Many times people will wake up after a dip dream and feel terrible because they really think that they caved. Many have reported that they can taste and smell the dip. Never fear… it’s only a dream.

Sores In Your Mouth (lip, tongue, cheek, etc.) – you’re done dipping… why does your mouth hurt so damn bad? You’ve got more sores in your mouth now than when you were dipping. What’s going on?!? There are a couple of explanations for this one. First, if you’re like most of us, you’ve found something to replace your dip to get you past the oral fixation (See Smokeless Alternatives). If you’re chewing seeds then there’s a TON of salt in your mouth that wasn’t there before. Also once you get dip out of your system the PH balance in your mouth is changing. Bottom line is this – get to a dentist and get checked out. But unless something stays around for more than two weeks you should be good to go.

Can’t Sleep – you’ve quit dipping and now you can’t sleep at all. Never fear, this is completely normal experience. It’ll take a while, but your sleep patterns will return to normal.

The Fog – you’re dizzy… you can’t think straight… your head hurts… you find yourself staring at your computer screen for hours on end not reading anything. Welcome to the dip fog. Your brain can’t handle the fact that you’re no longer feeding it dip. It might last just a couple of days and it might last a couple of weeks. Do not fret… once the fog lifts you’re well on your way to being dip free. Check out this article that Chewie has written about The Fog of Quitting Dip

Headaches – you might have one that brings you to your knees, or you might just have that dull thud feeling all day long — this too shall pass.

Sore Throat – If you’re a dipper and you quit you’re scared of anything that’s “off”. Why when you quit dipping do you suddenly get a sore throat? We’re not sure why but it happens more often than you’d think. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. This will help flush the nicotine and will help with your sore throat.

Anxiety – for years you’ve been dealing with life while medicating yourself with nicotine — it’s gone now and your body isn’t used to dealing with life without it. This condition will pass though you may want to talk to a doctor about some medication to take the edge off.

Problems “Going” – whether you know it or not, nicotine is a laxative. It’s helped keep you “regular” through all of your years of dipping. It takes some people a while to get their body adjusted to going without their natural dip laxative. Drink plenty of water and eventually this one will be “behind you”.

Hot Flashes – This one has been reported as a real doozy. Face, arms, legs, etc. can be very “warm” with some intense sweats. While this is a “symptom” it’s also been quite the trigger for some folks. Drink some water, get to the site and talk.

Depression – Many people have dipped for years or decades. Removing such an integral (though deadly) part of your life can lead to some pretty serious behavioral issues including depression. Talk to the folks on the boards as this is pretty common. As with any health issue please don’t hesitate to see a doctor as well. For more details about depression as a quitter click here.

There are a variety of other symptoms that have been attributed to quitting dip. If you don’t see yours listed, contact us and let us know about it!

switched to pouches last month take a regular dip in the morning and evening. This weekend found myself dipping like a mad man again. I want to quit but not sleeping and the headaches are killing me. I thought the pouches would help as it feels like I get no nicotine from them. I CRAVE the dip.

First day trying to quit after a can a day for 5 years, dipping for 8 years. Took one in the morning (630am), one at lunch (12:00) finally at 430 started to feel like shit. freezing cold (73 degrees in here), nauseous, achy, headache. Is this normal for my position?

Been chewing for 23 years and now I am 51hrs into transformation. I chew 1 1/2 cans a day. Now my body is feeling very bad, restless legs, shaking, eyes burning, lack of energy, fuzzy, irritable, and not thinking clearly. This is tougher than I thought! Does anyone else fall asleep and jump back awake with tingles through our body?

I have been reading some of these comments for a while now, and I am now on my 5th day of quitting.

My stomach feels completely jacked up and getting to sleep is really hard, but I will fight through this. Making it two weeks and beyond would be a great 23rd birthday present.

One more thing, my cheek feels stiff, almost like its thicker. My other symptoms seem to be going away. I think part of my painful gums was because I wouldn’t quit messing with em throughout the day. Anyone else experience the thick feeling cheek?

Oh hell yeah dude, that sensation didn’t leave me for a long time, it’s all in your head. You know like itching on a leg that has been amputated? It is the power of the mind. Crazy I know, but I had your same symptoms and probably a bunch of other dudes in here. In any case, just take it as a sign, that this time the quit is for real. Keep it up.
In fact I invite you to post with us if you want, we are also helping a new guy in this other forum.
it’s called “What to expect when you quit Dipping”

Ok. I was quit for 4 years after an on again off again habit of about 7 years. This last time was for about 6 or 7 months at about a can per week of pouches. I have that sensation in my mouth like I just took a dip out, but its been like 38 days. It feels like something is in my cheek when it isnt. Dip pocket still a little tender. I went to the dentist and he said all looked well and that my gums didnt even look like they were recieded. No sores, or anything that looks out of the norm. Just scared because I shouldnt be feeling a sensation that something is in my cheek… any ideas? Similar experience??

Bret, of course the best diagnose would be from a Dentist ( I know I hated when people said that) but that is the best answer, Now if you were to share how long you did it? what the symptoms are? any sores?, any pain? how many cans a day? That shit is powerful, but the Body is an amazing machine or live organism that has the power to heal itself over night, every time we go to sleep all these little agents go to work and try to repair the damage that happens or we do to it during the day. isn’t it awesome?
I am on day 91 and still have not gone to the dentist, but I feel much better, just brush everyday and use mouth wash, I heard some people using coconut oil to kill the bacteria and promote better oral health. Good Luck, you doing good.

K, so I quit on 9/15. I hate this shit. Im doing great but ive had a little bit of pain in my dip pocket. Is this normal for being quit that long? I chewed for about maybe 7 years off and on, quit for 4 years then started again for about 7 months and been quit again since Sept.

Well Hell guys, here is the thing, since I started my quit, (day 80 in 17 minutes) I’ve been here barking around to the four winds how shitty this endeavor has been for me, but as I read more of yall’s stories I know you guys are getting the raw deal as well. By bitching and kicking everyday we’ve been able to dodge the bitch bullet, that’s heroic boys. I said it before and I am saying it now, tough guys chew on that shit, but it takes a Chuck Norris caliber of a dude to quit. We are there quitters, We are freaking there, we reached that level of bad assness (if its a word).
Now along the way I called out and challenged some tough dudes or ladies to join us in the quit and test their toughness, well hell, some did as a matter of fact three bad asses took the challenge that I am aware of. JOEY (THE LIPSKI) CARNS, Brandon and Now Rick are on their way through hell like we all did it. Crazy motherfuckers!! but I applaud them for having the guts to take on the challenge.
If you are reading this post and got the guts to start the quit, DO IT!! quit pussy footing around and start, START!! I DARE you to go through those three fucking days of Hell, one day you’ll be glad you did it.

Good Job dude, hang in there.

I remember going through that fog, but this is how its gonna happen because it happened to me, you are going to wake up, do your normal routine and then all of the sudden as you are driving or at work, you are going to “remember” to feel bad, but guess what, you aint foggy no more, it’ll make you feel good inside and if you tell someone around you, they look at you weird, cause they don’t know, some of them that know about your quit actually feel good for you. In Any case, this episode alone will give you strength to keep going. Something to look forward to huh? Kick the can, crush that Bastard.!!!

Well Hot dam Joey, it is usually the other way around when the older brothers help the younger ones, but shit I am so dam glad you started your quit, I just finished posting a bad rant about my quit, but since you responded I found new strength to keep going. I shit you not, I had my keys ready to go to the store and get a can and start dipping again, here is what I wrote:
______________________________________________________________
Day 65

It doesn’t get better, this really sucks, i’ve had a craving all fucking afternoon. I saw this dumb fuck fat fucker taking a huge dip and spitting in a cup today while I was driving and I hate to admit it, but it was a fucking delicious sight, Ugly motherfucker in a beat up truck, to anyone else probably a disgusting scene to see, but to an ex dipper like me it was a really spectacular view, my mouth has been watering and I have been fighting the urge to just go and buy a can. Now I know I am just a piece of shit addicted ex dipper. I wish I could report that I drove by and I didn’t even get tempted, I wish I could say like in other posts I had my head high and felt bad for that person dipping, but no, I felt less than dirt because the craving is still there and seems to be more powerful than ever.
As I am typing this comment, I am wondering if I should share it, as I do not want to discourage the ones that are just starting, but the truth needs to be told, the journey aint easy, even when you get 2 months under your belt.

damn it all to hell, I wish I had never started this fucking shit, this is Hell.
______________________________________________________________

Now you have to be strong so I can stay strong, that’s how it works, I really thought people talking like this in here were full of shit, but now I know it’s true.

So Who is Next?

Good reply deepy. Been chewing 4 20 yrs. Starting to get massive headache and neck pain. One can firmly a day for me. My mom just passed on so quitting is gonna be real hard. But I’ve got kids to care for and I don’t like these symptoms. Very scary stuff. I thought that if my diet was solid and I worked out and drank lots of water I could keep drinking & dipping for a long time. This really sucks. Gotta quit before something quits inside me. Might be too late as I have these deep pains in my jaw neck and back of my head. It really sux that u have to quit things u love.

My name is Bobby and I have been dipping for almost 9 years and I have told myself I was gonna quit about a million times , it obviously hasn’t worked yet , I have a 20 month old and married and I just don’t want that crap around my family , my wife hardly kisses me anymore because she is always saying my breath smells like dip and that irritates me because I brush my teeth more than anyone I know. I dip anywhere from 1 to 1 and a half cans a day and I can’t keep a dip in longer than 15 to 20 minutes without spitting it out but I have built quite a few triggers over the years , I dip a lot at work and while I play golf , after meals and anytime I get super stressed I crave a dip , sometimes I beat the craving sometimes I give in , basically I want to quit for me but also I want to quit for my son and my wife , I want to be a good role model and a good husband who my wife likes to kiss again , any tips or advice id greatly appreciate

Bobby I have been dip free from my can a day habit for 19 days now. I started dipping while in the Army over 20 years ago. I have been using the patch and taking welbutrine. I am now down to the lowest level patch every other day. I didnt think I could ever throw the can away but I am doing better each day. I was inspired by sitting in the doctors office with my 62 year old mother at the beginning of the month. She was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. She quit smoking in 2006 but it still got her. I was basically scared straight as I never want my kids to ever have to sit through that kind of news. That was one of the worst moments of my life and I happen to have spent 26 months in Iraq and lost some friends over there. So I used copenhagen as a crutch all of these years to get through the stress of military service. I am not completely nic free but this is working for me. I plan to be completely nic free by mid july. I will orobobly use the welbutrine long term as I use it for another condition. Its a painful process but not nearly as painful as what my hard working mom is about to go through. BEST of luck Bobby hope you can find the courage to gain your freedom from the can.

Second week and trying to keep strong. Reached this page after googling the heartburn and throat burn. Throat burn is increasing in the second week.

Eating a lot, generally! Putting on weight which is getting me depressed lol

Keeping myself busy (IT Engineer here) by challenging myself with doable coding short term goals (a small personal project that will go large eventually)

My only advise would be to keep yourself busy! Easier said than done!

Praying a lot as well!

All the best everyone!

i’m a 22 year old college student athlete whose been dipping for 8 years at a tin every 2 days. I’m on day 16 of no tobacco and its not a simple task. of course before when i tried to quit i told myself that this was the last dip and i was going to quit tomorrow, but what i realized was I DIDNT WANT TO QUIT. Every situation is a trigger for putting a chew in but there is ways to beat it. The most important thing when it comes to quitting is you have to WANT TO QUIT. dont quit because everyone tells you that you should or your significant other says to. Quit for yourself and Your life. Take control of how you want to live. for anyone who throws in chews on the daily start by changing to pouches….. Yeah i said it, pouches. People wil tell you to man up but its your health were talking about here. the last month i did pouches and its pushed me to WANTING TO QUIT. when the urges come do something else. Flavored toothpicks is what i use but also gum, seeds, non nicotine alternatives, or eat something when you get the urge. Lastly when it comes to quitting simply stop buying tins. seriously! dont have a tin around and remember you’re bigger than this. You can beat this and you know you can!

I’m with Austin on everything he said. Well put. I found my biggest thing that’s caused me to give up the quitting effort in the past is the fear of talking about it too much. Obviously all your loved ones are gonna be there for you, that’s a given. But as much as it’s on your mind and you feel like it’s affecting you in one way or another, sometimes it’s all you can even think to talk about. And I’d ease my mind by saying to myself, “well hey, once we’re outta here we’ll get you a dip. Just calm down.” And that’s when it’s all over, man. Once you’ve stopped fighting it mentally, you’re dead on your feet before you’ve even taken a step to go buy a can. Remember you’re better than that shit and you won’t take no shit from that little 1.3 oz can. The answer is always NO. Don’t cave, don’t even think about it being an option. You quit for a reason. You might not remember what it is right now, conveniently enough. Funny how the brain works sometimes. But you know you quit for a damn good reason. Don’t forget that.

So I quit on Wednesday (making this my 4th) day without a dip. I was doing 5 cans a day and have been dipping for about 15 years. My eating is out of control, can’t sleep, everything is a haze. It’s not terrible, or at least not as bad as I anticipated. With that said I have quit 3 or 4 times and have never made it past 1 month. I remind myself 100 times a day why it is that I’m quiting (I want to be here when my first born is born and want to watch him/her grow up). Good luck to everyone trying to quit.

This post is old, but yes. After six years of chewing I quit cold turkey. The first night I had to get up and towel off three times. The night sweats gradually went away after a few nights. My only concern now is a numbing feeling in my tongue and lower lip. It’s been 6 days since I quit and I’m not really struggling at all. I quit drinking and chewing on Thursday night. I drank roughly a fifth of captin 100 proof and a tin of grizzly wintergreen a day. I’m not sure if it was good to quit both on the same night. I sat in bed last night for 7 and a half hours. Didn’t get any sleep at all. Hands/feel shakey. Sweating like crazy but I was cold. Basically it sucked. How long can I expect this? I’m only 21. Been drinking daily for only about 4 months. When I drink I like to blackout. (Is that strange) like I don’t have a few. I have the bottle. And fast.

you need to be in a proper detox center with alcohol. it can be very dangerous with out medical supervision. please call a chemical dependency professional.

Hey man, you’re on the right track. I’ve been there and came out on the other side. Reply to my comment if you want me to reach out.

Get some professional help my friend . Quitting both at the same time was a smart way to go. You will get the withdraws out of the way all at once. Give your local AA intergroup a call. They will be glad to help with quitting the alcohol.

Hey Joe Im the exact same way and 23 hows the sobriety going. I was on the fifth game for a while eating no food. Did it for a couple of years and my body has been feeling like its going to die. I’ve tried to quit both before but hopefully it sticks this time. Its weird being so young but I will as if Im old. Hopefully my body can regenerate. Did you drink at all prior to the 4 month binge?

Hey I got my ears zapped by this company yesterday. It takes away your chemical dependency I suppose and you have to work on the habitual side. Seems to be working, I have brief episodes of the fog and dizziness but other than that it’s going great!

Okay so I pretty much two cans a day (cope longcut) for at least 5 or six years. I was told by friends that it helps ya quit smoking. Some advice. Anyhow, I quit 3 days ago and I am wracked with severe muscle cramps in my legs and back, along with the other usual symptoms. Did anyone else experience this? I’m a welder and I can’t afford to have my body freakin out, let alone cancer. I truly regret that first pinch.

it’s most likely that those muscles are in spasm, not cramping. Nicotine is a strong relaxant of skeletal muscles. A lot of chronic users who quit end up dealing with muscle tension issues. Relaxation exercises, stretching and massage will help, and they will most likely go away with time.
