Symptoms of Quitting Dip and Chew

Symptoms When Quitting NicotineQuitting dipping is not an easy thing… if you’re like most of us, when you quit you’ll go through some withdrawal symptoms… These are completely normal. That being said… if you are concerned about a particular symptom, by all means go to a doctor and get checked!!! This will help both your peace of mind and may catch something before it gets serious.

Dip Dreams – you’ve been dipping for years sometimes decades. Your brain is used to thinking a certain way with a certain amount of nic in it… once that’s taken away many people have “dip dreams”. These dreams range from mild to incredibly intense. Many times people will wake up after a dip dream and feel terrible because they really think that they caved. Many have reported that they can taste and smell the dip. Never fear… it’s only a dream.

Sores In Your Mouth (lip, tongue, cheek, etc.) – you’re done dipping… why does your mouth hurt so damn bad? You’ve got more sores in your mouth now than when you were dipping. What’s going on?!? There are a couple of explanations for this one. First, if you’re like most of us, you’ve found something to replace your dip to get you past the oral fixation (See Smokeless Alternatives). If you’re chewing seeds then there’s a TON of salt in your mouth that wasn’t there before. Also once you get dip out of your system the PH balance in your mouth is changing. Bottom line is this – get to a dentist and get checked out. But unless something stays around for more than two weeks you should be good to go.

Can’t Sleep – you’ve quit dipping and now you can’t sleep at all. Never fear, this is completely normal experience. It’ll take a while, but your sleep patterns will return to normal.

The Fog – you’re dizzy… you can’t think straight… your head hurts… you find yourself staring at your computer screen for hours on end not reading anything. Welcome to the dip fog. Your brain can’t handle the fact that you’re no longer feeding it dip. It might last just a couple of days and it might last a couple of weeks. Do not fret… once the fog lifts you’re well on your way to being dip free. Check out this article that Chewie has written about The Fog of Quitting Dip

Headaches – you might have one that brings you to your knees, or you might just have that dull thud feeling all day long — this too shall pass.

Sore Throat – If you’re a dipper and you quit you’re scared of anything that’s “off”. Why when you quit dipping do you suddenly get a sore throat? We’re not sure why but it happens more often than you’d think. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. This will help flush the nicotine and will help with your sore throat.

Anxiety – for years you’ve been dealing with life while medicating yourself with nicotine — it’s gone now and your body isn’t used to dealing with life without it. This condition will pass though you may want to talk to a doctor about some medication to take the edge off.

Problems “Going” – whether you know it or not, nicotine is a laxative. It’s helped keep you “regular” through all of your years of dipping. It takes some people a while to get their body adjusted to going without their natural dip laxative. Drink plenty of water and eventually this one will be “behind you”.

Hot Flashes – This one has been reported as a real doozy. Face, arms, legs, etc. can be very “warm” with some intense sweats. While this is a “symptom” it’s also been quite the trigger for some folks. Drink some water, get to the site and talk.

Depression – Many people have dipped for years or decades. Removing such an integral (though deadly) part of your life can lead to some pretty serious behavioral issues including depression. Talk to the folks on the boards as this is pretty common. As with any health issue please don’t hesitate to see a doctor as well. For more details about depression as a quitter click here.

There are a variety of other symptoms that have been attributed to quitting dip. If you don’t see yours listed, contact us and let us know about it!

Trust me you have no stress at 15, I’ve chewed since I was 15 am now 22 and have serious jaw and tooth pain constant sore throat, headaches, mouth pain and I’ve been trying to quit for awhile with only two runs that last 3-4 months. I’m now quitting for good as I finally got a good job that requires me to not use nicotine. But I’m telling you quit as soon as you can. Your young and it will manipulate your brain more than an older adult and it will effect your dependence on it a lot more.

I thought that I would post about my current success. I’ve been having an increase in sinus problems along with a right ear effusion that was treated a few weeks ago. I would cough every morning and spit up crap. This last weekend I went camping for a few days with a few friends. I decided not to buy anymore while I traveled out to the woods. Friday night was my last chew, Saturday was pretty difficult and Sunday was the worse ever. Monday night 72 hours in wasn’t bad but I was already back to work then. This morning which is now 4 days in, I feel better, sinus problems are resolving, mouth hurt a little bit. Everything feels so much better, fog is resolving, anxiety is resolving. Some minor gas and abdominal cramps. My chest doesn’t hurt from the anxiety. It was rough but I had to do it. I kept thinking with my 2nd kid on the way that I wouldn’t be around very long if I continued chewing; to watch both my kids grow. This is a can a day for 8 years.

Each one of you that has quit great job!

For those that are thinking of quitting, just buckle down and do it. It’ll hurt for a bit but i’m glad that I quit cold turkey.

Here is how I did it. I am on day 23 and this has been a nightmare but getting easier. I started dipping when I was 14. I was dipping 1 can per day of Copenhagen by the time I was 16. I did this until I was 46. I quit in boot camp in military because I was forced at age 18. Had a dip in unless I was eating or sleeping. Watched Curt Shilling and this was it for me.

I have tried to quit before and failed usually within hours. So here is how I did it. I used 4MG mini lozenges for 21 days. I averaged about 30 per day for the first week, got this down to 15-20 towards the end. Then on day 22-42 I used 2 MG mini lozenges for 21 days. I had no limit on these either. I took as many as I needed to not chew. Then here was my trick, I went to Amazon and bought 1MG lozenges and used these for another week or two, then I started breaking them into 1/4’ths. So now I was using .25mg lozenges for another two weeks.

Then I went cold turkey, and now I am on day 23. Each step down was not pleasant. Just FYI- I couldn’t have gone cold turkey. I guess I’m too weak, but this way worked for me. Now I’m not really thinking about dipping too much.

Same situation here man… can a day forever… I made it past 30 days recently and started to work out again. Believe it or not, I replaced the dip craving with the need to get out and run. I am still fat and 40, but it really helped. The fake chew was AWESOME as well, I added a little more pepper for a more realistic burn, and lastly I used medication to help with the cravings and withdraw symptoms. Just overall really good combo for me. Now I am off everything and still going strong.

Stay with it, keep going, it sucks, but you will succeed.

Been chewing a can per day since I was 15, I was a high school, college, and semi professional baseball player. I had always told myself that when I was done playing, I would quit for good. That never happened, Grizzly Straight was my companion through thick and thin, it was my only crutch. Never drank much or anything. About a month ago, I started experiencing severe pain in my neck around my glands. Didn’t think much of it until one day the pain almost caused me to pass out. I quit cold turkey on September 4th. I am about 2 and half weeks in and the fog/lack of focus and anxiety are still present. Can anyone give me some insight to when this will go away. It is starting to effect my daily life to the point where I do not feel safe driving long distances because of my lack of focus and time. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, Matt

These symptoms will be fewer and farther between as your quit goes on. I suggest you join the quit group for your month if you are serious about continuing with your quit. I would have caved around day 20 had I not had this support. Here’s the link to the December quit group
Good luck with your quit!

Hey I have some right side burning inside my mouth on the cheek. My jaw is a little stiff. I quit dipping for a week now. I have only dipped for about 3 years with the last year and a half where I chewed about a tin a day or so. I was wondering if any of you experienced this pain. Could it be a root canal? Please let me know.

Started dipping when I was 15 years old (happy days). That was 42 years ago. I never was serious about quitting until a month ago and I stopped cold turkey. I cant really tell you why other than I have 2 grandsons and the youngest 4 years old was starting to spit on the ground when I would spit.
I dipped a can a day every day and the quitting wasn’t the problem i had the will power to handle that, it was the symptoms.
Drowsiness all of the time
Cant sleep at night
Crazy dreams
Falling a sleep during the day
All of this 4 weeks after I’ve quit

I quit cold turkey Monday and it wasn’t too bad. I used chewing to quit smoking and was on it for a year and a half. On tobacco for 12 years. Wednesday night I had flu like symptoms at an exorcism type level. Google it and came upon the quitters flu. But what can I say it’s an addiction I took out a can, the second I smelled it I was in the bathroom again, and the can is in the trash. Amazing how a little can can screw up your body so bad.

I stopped dipping about a week ago. I dipped for the last 15 years, since i was 23. I started working from home about 10 years ago, where i ended up dipping all day long. Lastly going through about 2 tins a day. I tried to quit several times, but typically could not make it more than a few hours before caving. At least in situations where I had no reason to not dip, like just chilling or working at home. Tried the nic gum a few years back, but didn’t help and going cold turkey wasn’t working too well for me. Briefly tried the herbal snuff, but that didn’t seem to be doing the trick.

I had bought a fairly pricey vape for e-juice as a thought to quit, about 2 weeks ago. But, I do not think i was quite mentally prepared to quit at that point and i was just using it on occasion as a break from the dip for the first week. Then i was watching espn one morning and caught this interview with Curt Schilling :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2o1TYea0G3s .

This video did it for me. I took the pinch i had in my mouth out and picked up that vaporizer i bought. While long term effects are still to be determined, All my current research online says that vaping is a lot safer way to get nicotine than from tobacco and a lot cheaper. And you can try to ween yourself off the nicotine since you can buy it with different nicotine strengths. It also does an awesome job at helping with the oral fixation / need to do something out of boredom issues. you get that urge to take a pinch, grab a spitoon, spit… Just grab the vape and take a few drags.

Granted cold turkey is the best way to go But if ya can’t get past that nicotine mountain, and want to stop putting all that cancerous crap in your mouth that comes with tobacco. And need to find something else to help with the boredom/oral fixation issue, in my opinion vaping is a good option to try. I started at 12mg nicotine and have already moved down to 6mg nicotine. I have only had really minor urges to grab a pinch, maybe a few times a day, but very easily i can talk myself out of it.

I have apparently been experiencing a lot of the above withdrawal symptoms though, which is what made me find this site. I think the vaping helped, where i did not become too irritated or angry. No depression or dip dreams either. As well as the urge to grab a picnh was greatly diminished. But i did get an increase in sores/sensitivity of the tongue, and the massive brain frog. I thought i had just gotten stupid all of a sudden. I just have been having such a hard time thinking straight and even thought to myself that i had felt lightly drunk. My digestive system was all messed up as well, from pains in the stomach to discomfort and pressure. Metamucil is seeming to help that out though. Get some hot flashes and minor headaches as well. But i am still getting nicotine from the e-juice, although i think it is a lot less than what i was getting while dipping. Usually dipped longhorn or grizzly mint. Can i get intense withdrawal symptoms, just from a decrease in my nicotine intake?

Day 3 is in the books, can’t sleep and have to get ready for work in 4 hours. Chewed 1-2 cans of Skoal Wintergreen Long Cut a day for past 15 years. I’ve been trying to quit several times over the last few years and the last 4 months I’ve gotten up to 22, and 20 days without dipping but caved the fuck in a couple times and got back on the horse. Im using the 4mg Nicorettes about 8-10 a day. Plan on stopping them August 1st. My gum lines receded a bit, a few cavities over the years and I just dont ever want to fuckin dip again. The worst is knowing all that on the drive home you still think about stopping at the A+ or Wawa when you drive by and say well maybe…I can quit next week. I mean it this time Im fuckin done with it. Wish me luck brothers! Im gonna grab some coffee and power through Day 4!

I have used Chew for over 25 years and quit two days ago, I dipped a can or more per day. Right now I am using 4-5 nicorete lozenges per day to get past the unbelievable cravings. Is this wrong should I just go cold turkey? Last time I tried that I literally was sick I was litterally shaking

Hi guys,
I started dipping Kodiak 19 years ago in the Marines. Recently a buddy of mine that I served with had a cyst removed from his throat that ended up being non cancerous. I quit a week ago today. My biggest help had been vigorous exercise. And a diet of mangos, kiwi, carrot juice and plenty of water. I quit cold turkey!!!! No nicotine replacement.

That’s awesome Coach. Cold Turkey is really the only way to go. I’m over 6 months quit after 17 years of dipping and what really helped me stay quit was making a promise every day to other quitters and reading what others had to say. I was hesitant to join KTC ’cause online forums weren’t really my thing but it’s the only reason I’m quit today. No need to go it alone. Congrats on your first week man. That’s a huge accomplishment.

We are all reading this because we know better., right? It is so tough, it’s worth the struggle. We wouldn’t want our sons to start…we regret the day we did. Don’t let a bad minute, day or week change our minds, waste our health, our hard earned money. We are better than this absolutely evil substance. I used to say I wouldn’t ever try cocaine, I can’t stop cope and I can buy it anywhere….legally. That’s a pretty sad but true, but I’m done this time… Still chewing 4 and 2 mg gum a couple of times a day, like after lunch… It’s been a rough month, plenty of challenges to make me want a dip. I willed myself for cope to make me sick six weeks ago, it worked! Four weeks now, no chew, the only guys that are missing me chewing are the convenience store owners. Take care of yourself, be blessed with the renewing of your mind and spirit, help a kid to quit.

The struggle is real day 18 and going strong. Mouth feels funny, jaw and ear. Reading your comments are healing in itself. Knowing my symptoms are common is making the transition easier. I chewed a can every 1.5 days and I tell ya I’m so happy I quit (grizzly). I got the neck aches and shoulder aches but I’m gonna keep pushing. iI went to the dentist on day 12 cause i was a hot mess. GoT a complete cleaning and oral exam. Tissue was good. No dip pockets. I encourage anyone having concerns to go see your dentist and be completely honest with him. Great peace of mind. I read that your mouth starts back feeling normal in or around day 60. I guess I got about 40 more days. Pray for me guys and I’ll keep praying for you as well. God bless. Thanks!!

My name is Bobby and I want to quit and I have tried to quit for a long time now , I dip anywhere from 1- 1 and a half cans a day and I have been dipping for around 9 years , I have a wife and a son and I really just don’t want to let them down , I don’t want my son growing up around it and I want my wife to want to kiss me again without making a comment about how I smell like dip even though I just brushed my teeth . I have a lot of triggers I have to deal with , the main one being stress , if something pisses me off or upsets me or just doesn’t go my way it’s just so easy to pop a dip in . Anyways tonight is day 1, haven’t had a dip since watching the reds game, hopefully with a lot of prayers and a good support system I can finally kill the can , thanks yall

Don’t talk about it be about it , don’t say your gonna quit when you still got a can in your back pocket , throw it away and just quit . Good lord, go to a dentist and get checked out, you’ve quit and got mouth cancer anyways, what a load of bull, no one is giving a flat out striaght answer to anything on This page I hate it , I’ve put the can down years ago, went to dentist after dentist and they all take a biopsy of my lip because they say I have cancer , and comes back negative, it’s just a callous that’s developed after my mouth healed from the years of dipping , most dentist or glorified teeth cleaners don’t waste you’re money, go to an oral pathologistit and get the right answer the first time,it is not cancer , so relax people, you are fine. Some people don’t heal completely , you will have a scar for life, no big deal. As for everything else when it comes to quitting dip, best advice is man the fuck up if you are serious about quitting, it sucks and sorry to say the craving never goes away, you just have to be stronger than that little can of dip.

Yes, Eric it is normal. I am on day 7 and you are doing it right. I get up every day and think to myself – day 7 of the quit, one day at a time. If you get a craving, kick in all those psychological mechanisms that made you put off quitting for so long. Hijack them now to use to procrastinate acting on your craving. Hijack them the way nicotine hijacks your brain’s dopamine pathways. You can beat this – no nicotine today.

Well maybe this will help with the process, I have chewed for 20 years (can a day) and now im on day 23 with Chantix. I remember someone in the weight room telling me that they quit but you “really had to want it” I believe I know what that means now. Im not going to Vegas for march madness bc that’s just a fail in the waiting. All I want to do is Sleep, Eat, Workout and I let everyone guess the other thing. Now its getting better slowly. I can do thing like play computer games, poker or drive with a Smoky Mountain fake chew in and not sweat it to bad. I probably helps I havent had any alcohol during this time as well. I wonder if after 90 with the Chantix (which was free BTW through my insurance) if the massive headaches will occur. Good Luck Everyone. Chris

Here’s my experience with Chantix if your considering using it to help with your quit.

Hey so I’m on day 45 of my quit after 5 years and 1-3 cans a week. Where I work a lot of people either smoke or dip and I honestly I didn’t feel confident in my will power. My doctor prescribed Chantix, I used it for about 3 weeks before I felt confident I didn’t need it anymore. Chantix will occupy the nicotine receptors in your brain so you will not crave nicotine. For example, I’ve had on two occasions had a coworker take out his can of Grizzly, take a pinch, and pack a lip right in front of me and looking me in the eye while he did it. Normally this would have been a huge trigger for me, with Chantix I felt no craving at all. I’ve gradually got the confidence to realize I don’t need that trash to get me through my work day or a long drive. Trust me, it feels really good to not be a slave to the can.

The downside to Chantix is it will not alleviate withdrawal symptoms. I’ve gone through a whole bunch of the withdrawal symptoms. You’ll still have the wild ride of withdrawals, but in my case, my urge to go back to the can was minimal. I took the good advice of some people on this site and went back to the doctor. He said I was okay and I was experiencing withdrawals and anxiety symptoms. At this point the fog is clearing but I’m still dealing with some wicked anxiety issues at times. To everyone out there quitting, stay strong, find support in friends and family, read this site, talk to your doctor/dentist. Its tough but it things slowly get better.

Chantix didn’t do as much for me as it does for some people. For example, I have tried to quit in the past and I would get super intense cravings that would sometimes last for hours but with Chantix they aren’t as intense and they only last for 5-10 minutes. It has been a big help to pretty much every person I have talked to. I wish it was something anybody willing to try and quit tobacco could get for free.

I had the sweats for maybe 2 weeks, sleep? I didn’t get a great nite sleep until day 20 or 25.

Hang in there, it’s part of the road map to quitting.

I quit last Wednesday and on Friday I got really sick with flu. It’s now Tuesday and still have a fever. Cold chills but sweating profusely, especially at night. Looked up what ppl go through when quitting and came across this. Is it likely what I’m experiencing is the withdraw. How long does sweating and not sleeping go on?

Quit two-weeks ago. Swollen lymphnode’s below ears and headaches everyday. Don’t know if this is normal. Ears won’t pop either. Anyone else have similar symptoms? Maybe it’s TMJ from the dip?

I’ve been experiencing major stomach pains since I decided to quit. Anyone else get that?

Is it normal to have marks on my tongue shortly after quitting? If so how long until they go away? Only dipped for about a year about a can a week

Been dipping Copenhagen (two cans a week) since 1991. Just ended up getting sick of it. Dropped it like it’s hot on the 1st of the year and could care less about having another dip. I know it’s only day 12 but i just told myself to simply not purchase a can. I buy one, I lose at the game.
As for my experience, days 2-4 pretty much sucked because of sweating and inability to sleep good. From what I have read nicotine pretty much is out of you by the fifth day which is when I began to sleep good again. My gut seems to be much better as it does not get rotgut anymore from dip.. Oh and efff you Sean B from 1991 for telling me dipping was the cool thing to do…. i spent thousands of dollars because I listened to you.
it’s mind over matter really. Just tell yourself you just won’t buy another can.. walk away from it like a man.

K…so, I decided to actually stick to a resolution this year. Been dipping for about 16 years, and a can a day for about the last five. Decided to go down to pouches, did that for about three days. Mad crazy mood swings, anger at everything. The cats. The wife. The chair. The sky. I decide this is what PMS must feel like. I power through with lots of distractions.

I am now ending day 2 with no tobacco. I have been using a vaporizer, almost as a security blanket I suppose. Figure this weekend I’ll quit that too. I have the majority of the nicotine out of my system, and will likely wean off over the next two weeks. I count it as a win though. The last time I went two days without tobacco was in 1998, I think.

I have been trying to quit for 3 months now. Have made it 2 weeks one time without a dip of snuff. I have absolutely made my mind up that I am done. I am tired of worrying all the time about the effects snuff is having on my body. 16 year habit is going to be tough to break. Wish me LUCK!!!!

So I’m 20, dipped a can every couple days or so. Started late in high school because my whole football team did and I guess it was “the thing to do.” I’ve only been quit for a few days now, but the headaches are absolutely awful, almost to the point of not being able to do anything. It’s a good thing I’m on Christmas break or I’d be in bad shape

I’m originally from Canada but live in the states now but still go back to Canada every year at Christmas to be with family. Anyways I didn’t realize we were leaving so soon after I got back from college and didn’t have a chance to get a log to last me the week (I dip roughly a can a day but my parents don’t know this). A can up here in Canada (Ontario at least) costs around $25 yes $25 for a single can of skoal unreal so I decided what better time to quit. I’m on day 3 now, dip dreams are vivid and the withdrawals are evident but I’m going to stay strong and will get through this.

I quit cold turkey about 6 days ago, and I’ve been getting these weird, random pains in different parts of my jaw. Anyone else experience this? It’s really random and it seems to happen more when I think about it

Woke up today to a nice breakfast and a dip of Red Seal Natural Long cut. The same routine I have had since I was about 17. (22 now) I decided my face was looking unkept so I decided to shave and go get a haircut. I got the haircut, and came back to shave, and noticed the lower part of my face, (Jaw) looked a tad bit different. This was nothing major, and nobody else has noticed, but I sure as heck noticed. I looked in my mouth, and yes, it is deforming just enough for me to be able to see the difference. I decided today at around 12 PM I am done with this crap. I know it is a long road ahead but I am ready to quit. People have tried to get me to quit ever since I started. I am a pastor’s son, so people at church would always tell me I need to quit, and I just laughed in their faces saying I would be okay. Well I am not okay, and that stuff is too important to me. That is not a good thing. I am done. Throwing out my two cans I have left. (I used can a day)
