What To Expect When You Quit Dipping

What To Expect When You Quit Dipping

So you want to quit dipping and you would like to know what to expect when you do. We’re not going to pull any punches around here, it’s tough. That’s why we’re all here. This timeline has been put together over the years with the input of THOUSANDS of quitters. It has been shown to be remarkably accurate from the time you STOP USING NICOTINE.

Days 1 through 3 – Pure hell. You will walk in the fog. Nothing will seem real. Your brain is wondering where the hell its fix is and it is going to punish you until you come up with it. 72 hours, that’s all you need to get the nicotine out of your system. This is where you start to deal with the physical withdrawal associated with quitting dip. Drink lots of water. Read, post, read and post. Don’t take your anger out on your loved ones. We always tell everyone………Make this quit about YOU. If you quit for your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, kids, mommy or daddy, you will resent them during this period. Quit for yourself and come in here to rant. Yell at us. Bitch at us. We can take it. We’ve been there.

Days 4 through 20 – Here comes the mind games. The nicotine is out of your system now. You will still have some physical things to deal with.

  • Cravings
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Constipation, gas, stomach pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore tongue and/or gums

Yep, you have this to look forward to. Your brain is rewiring itself. It isn’t used to being in an oxygen rich environment. Your body is responding in kind. Everything is a mind game now. All the cravings you have are actually due to triggers. Triggers are events where you are in a situation you would normally dip in. Mowing the grass, playing poker online, playing golf, working on the car………you get the picture. Keep drinking water, use seeds, the fake stuff, whatever you need to keep the dip out of your mouth. Remember, oral fixation is part of our habit, something you will eventually need to break. For now though, use all the tools you have.

Days 20 – 50 – You’re winning. Life isn’t great, but you probably had a couple of nights where you actually got some sleep. You might notice you’re going to bed earlier than you normally do. Not staying up to get in that last dip. You may notice some sores in your mouth. You’re thinking, “great, I quit dipping and now I have cancer.” You almost certainly don’t. Your mouth is healing itself. Tiny ulcers you’ve had for a long time are healing. We recommend you visit your dentist around the 30 day mark. Don’t be a pansy, just do it. He or she will be very supportive and they can explain the sores much better than we can. Don’t let your guard down. Don’t go out drinking with the fellas or the girls. We also recommend that you don’t drink for at least the first 50 days. Drinking is a huge trigger event and it weakens your resolve.

Days 50 – 70 – Cruise control. Life is really good. You still think about it, but this is good stuff here. Some people may suffer anxiety attacks during or a little before this stage. Some doctors say we dipped to relieve anxiety anyway. Some people can push right through this, others need a little help. Talk to your doctor before you quit or immediately after you quit. They will know what to do. Some give Wellbutrin or Lexapro. Lots of people in the support community take or have taken these medicines and can help you with the affects. Don’t wait till you get to this stage of the game to talk to a doctor. You’ll cruise through this stage much easier if you know how to take care of the anxiety or at least know it’s coming.

Days 70 – 90 – Late term craves, the doldrums, the blahs, the blues. Some people end up feeling like they are right back at day 1. The fog, the haze, the craves. It can be a tough time. You need to let people in your group know this is happening. Time to circle the wagons to get through it. It usually only lasts a few days. Fight through this and make sure your order your HOF Knife or Coin. Here are a couple of articles about this time period which we refer to as “The Funk”

Days 90 – HOF – Houston, resume the countdown. Enjoy the hell out of these last 10 days. You will be celebrating with your group as you all enter the HOF. It is a great feeling and an accomplishment you should not take lightly. Do something special for yourself and your family. They put up with your sorry ass for the last 90 days and they deserve something too.

100+ Days – Stay vigilant. Use the tools you have, to continue beating back any cravings or urges. You will still experience dip dreams and longings, but you are fully qualified to beat them down. Continue to post roll with your group. Get into the newer groups and help somebody out. Pass it along. Live the dream.

I am quitting bc I realize I don’t need it and its a waste of money, my girlfriend doesn’t like it and she wants me to be healthy. I will still go thru about a whole can a day and it breaks my spirit when I realize I’m doing it. the only thing that can really get me thru a long period if time without it is when I spend the day with her. but free seeing her and not having thought about it, I pull into a gas station go in and ask for Copenhagen straight or wintergreen, and after I put one in is when I begin to feel like shit for it. I have “quit” at least 6 tines over the past two years and I can’t win for loosing. I need help and I need it now, I’m being driven up the damn wall, can’t sleep just thinking about it and even with the dip just thinking about quitting and “what would my baby say if she was here?” Makes it only worse in my mind . any advise?

So you are actually closet dipping. That is one of the worst things you can put yourself thru. The guilt and having to go thru withdraws constantly.
I have about 5 or 6 weeks in as a quitter. I dipped about two cans a day for at least 15 years. You can quit.
It is very hard for everyone not just you.

Here are the quit instructions:
1)Decide a date to quit and do it.
2)Get in your mind life is gonna really suck for a week or two. Be prepared.
3)Do whatever it takes to not put that shit in your mouth (fake dip, beef jerkey, gum, etc).
4)Take it DAY by DAY.
5)Stop making bullshit excuses to not stop dipping today or start back. Just quit!

Please understand tobacco is a killer. My wife is a nurse. This is killing young people too. People always think it will happen to someone else. Keep dipping it is going to kill you.

Been dipping for 7 years. 2+ cans a day skoal apple. Honestly I believe it is time to quit because ive just been put on anxiety medication and it seems to be reacting horribly with my dip. I get about three dips a can and about the only time I dont dip is at meals. I even enjoy falling asleep for the night with a good pinch in. Im ganna do it some how. Every time ive tried to stop in the past something seems to go bad in my life to make me want it more. Its sad that something you can pick up at a gas station can have such a hard grip on your life.

I have been chewing for 9 years, grizz wintergreen(can/2days). Those first 3 days were hell! No joke. I woke up one morning ready to quit and I am happy with that decision. 50 days now and I can say, after reading every ones response and comments, that I have had it easy. Dip dreams are common but they are just dreams. Sore throat on week 3. Today was my first day not craving at all. I was in class this evening and a guy unsealed his new tin of grizzly wintergreen in front of me then proceeded to put one in. I was impressed with myself. Watched him do this, and then talked to him for a few minutes. Didn’t even want any. Smell was amazing as always but I quit because I was ready to. Didn’t do it for anyone. Chewie is somewhat right about words like try and others, but it’s a lot easier typing these words then thinking this way. I knew I could do this from day 1. So I may be a little impressed with myself, I am not shocked I’m on day 50. Good luck everyone out there. Different people experience quitting differently, I just got lucky and it was easy.

Been dipping for 5 years now ( can every 2 days) started when I was 16. I’ve quit once before but now it’s starting to take it’s toll on my mouth (gums receding ) haven’t dipped for a week and now I have the worse sore throat and it’s hard to swallow. My teeth hurt as we’ll . Of course i look up the symptoms online and everywhere I look points to cancer this and cancer that. Will be going to the doctor on Monday. I will never put a dip in again after this scare

Day one for me. Been dipping for about 15 years. Started in my teenage years and the addiction began. I have quit once already and made it a year 3 months and 29 days, not that I was counting. Had a relapse when my second son was born and been dipping again for about 20 months. I have been taking chantix for a week now and also took it previously as well. I can vouch that it works, for me anyway. I hope to make it past the ten day mark and cruise through this process. My biggest problem is not losing my cool with my little boys or wife. Hope to be able to quarantine myself so I do t hurt my little boys and my wife. I am ready to move past this addiction and be a better example for my children. Will check back in down the road.

Hey all, I’ve recently decided to quit chewing. I’m a senior in high school and I have been going through about a can a day. Recently I got caught chewing at a wrestling tournament in the locker room, so many wrestlers chew it’s unbelievable. Me and teammates chewed in the locker rooms every tournament no problem. Eventually we all get caught. Well, this happened the week before regionals and I was suspended from sports for 30 days. I’m not able to wrestle anymore and that’s a tough pill to swallow because wrestling is my life, I’ve been wrestling since I was 4 years old traveling all across the country attending tournaments. I had aspirations on becoming a state champ this year after all the hard work I’ve put in and I had a good shot, I was ranked 3rd in the state. Having this happen was enough for me to never want to chew again. I’ve let so many people down and I’m having a hard time dealing. Quitting is hard enough as is is, but I’m already depressed from not being eligible to wrestle. I haven’t had but one chew since, so roughly a week ago. After a few days, I was feeling terrible so I caved and put one in And I threw up? Is that normal? It’s been a few days and is still rough. I’m down in a couple of ways so it’s proving to be very difficult. Is there any pointers out there? I don’t want to lose anything else.

Sorry to bore ya’ll with my story but feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, take care! And good luck to everyone!

This time I’m going to do it! I’m 43 and dipped since I was 12. It’s weird to tell people I’ve dipped 31 years and I’m only 43. But I lost my mom last May to cancer and now I’m close to losing my dad to esophagus cancer. I’m not going out that way and not forcing my kids into dealing with losing me that way. I’m on day 5. I’ve been to “day 5” hundreds of other times though. The longest I have quit was 2 months and 6 days in 2011. I had to dip again before I hurt one of my peewee football parents. I’m going to quit this time because I hate being controlled by anything. Just a tip for some I’ve found helpful. Quit drinking caffeine before you quit dipping. Getting rid of that stimulant first seems to help. Good luck to everyone!!!!

I’ve made it two weeks without a dip… my mouth feels so much better too.. cravings are less and less. I even had drinks at the Phoenix Open last weekend and although had the urge..never, stopped to by a tin. Can’t wait to day 30, 90 and 1 full year without that crap. IF your reading this and still dip it’s not worth it. You can stop cold turkey as i have. Man up boys.

I drank the first 2 weeks as well. You have to want to quit and triggers shouldn’t do anything. I actually welcomed all my triggers just so I can fight them. 47 days clean after 11 years chewing. First try quitting and so far so good and I don’t see myself ever going back to the sac

I’m at 33 days. 2-3 tins a week. Mostly dipped while at work. Put a dip in around 630am and kept it all day. Having stomach aches and a lil anxiety. But worst of all is the sleeping thing. Can’t stay awake after work , but like clock work I wake up at 230 am. My alarm is set for 445. Doesn’t make life easy

Hi guys – Had my weekly dip dream last night.Dipped for 8 years – Cope Whiskey Blend was my go to. Quit back in September 2013 – September 8th to be exact….almost six months later and I’m still craving it each and every day. Getting that tingling feeling where my dip sat in my mouth all the time. God do I hate that feeling now. Used to be the thing reminding me that I needed to pack a lip. Now its just a reminder of how addict to this crap I really was….

Hey boys, been chewing Kodiak and Skoal since 16 yrs old. Started while playing high school baseball and never stopped through college, professional life, etc.. was a closet dipper as the wife went to bed i’d fire up the chew… only chewed once or twice a day for 25 yrs… this past year th jaw started getting tight… dentist said i started to have gingivitis, etc and just wasn’t worth it or even fun anymore.. so, i’m on day 8 and even had beers this weekend with no relapse.. so, hang in there and i’m fighting like crazy to kick this beast. Mouth already feels 100% better and i ain’t going back. Good luck boys.

Iv chewed a can of copehegan longcut everyday since i was about 16. Im 21 now and i joined the army and you are not allowed to chew during basic training. I leave febuary 2 nd so i thought id quit before then so im not freaking out during basic training. I havent had a chew in a little more than two days and i honest dont feel anything different really? Like i want to go buy a can but its not that bad of an urge. Will there be worse symptoms ha or is it just mental. If your mentally tough will i be fine?

Dave, I have chewed a can a day since I was 18, Im now 33. There has not been one day that I havent dipped- sick, hung-over, dental-work, etc. I am 4 days in and like you, dont feel any different. I felt a little foggy on the first day but could care less about it right now. I feared quitting for so long that I may have over prepared myself mentally. So I feel like im in the same boat as you, did it get any worse or what weeks into quiting?

Day 3 for me so far. The biggest thing I have noticed at this point is my fatigue and my inability to concentrate…almost as if I’m simply going through the motions, or walking through the fog as described above. Anybody got tips on something I could do to, I guess, regain my concentration? I’ve tried concentrating on something specific and I just can’t seem to do it at this point.

Day 40 here, taking it one day at a time. Don’t look out and don’t look back, look at getting past each hour if you have to. Document your days and that will remind you of how tough we are for quitting, like we thought we were tough for dipping. Life has been much better without it, more energy, more money, stronger. We are gladiators for quitting.

In the middle of day 5. Dipper for 12 years, decided that 30 years old would be when I stopped. Cold turkey approach; not substituting with anything else (although I noticed a tremendous craving for candy that luckily I have been able to steal from around the office). I definitely still feel like I have a ‘haze’ going on here; I’m not sure my physical dependency is gone yet. Skoal Straight Pouches, 2 tins per day habit.

I’ve been dipping since i was 18 or so. I always told myself that when i turned 25, i’d stop. Never did i think i’d actually still dip until then, but it sounded nice. Saturday i turned 25. I’ve been chewing this past year non-stop. Ever since i found out about Camel Snus, it has dominated my life. Wherever i was, i’d have a pouch in. As i took my last dip Saturday morning around 11:00am, i told myself this was it. Fast forward nearly 48 hours later and the withdrawals have started to kick in. It all started last night around 8:30pm. Felt strange, in a dream. Started to get a bit dizzy. Attempted to go to bed but the insomnia kicked in. Took some NyQuil, but that seemed to make things even worse. This morning i woke up feeling great. Went to the gym like normal before hopping on the ferry to work. I noticed my throat had a tightening feeling in it (probably from the lack of snus). I think the worst thing so far has been the panic attacks i’m getting. I’m generally a nervous person, but man these attacks are killing me. Well i’m starting to ramble now…keeping my head up though regardless.

Your brain will give you any excuse to use- just don’t use. If that’s the only thing you accomplish in a day, it was a successful day. Hang jn there bud

After reading your post, I can’t believe how close our stories are. Im 52 and had a major dose of peer pressure back as a freshman, Playing football in Georgia…

I also, spend my professional day in front of a computer as a package designer. And for over 30 years, I always reach for the can prior to the mouse…

Im not a “hog” dipper, so I don’t use a lot, But will keep the tobacco in for hours…

But sad to say this isn’t the first time I have tried to quit… No need to say this is the hardest thing I have ever tried to do….

But like you, @ over 50, enough is enough and i think I can finally do it…

Day two, But first day at work and it is pure HELL… But good luck buddy, Im sure the both of us can do this!

Hey Yann, We’re about the same age and similar back grounds. I quit 8 days ago, after a can a day for 30 years. My mouth still feels a little weird, but can feel an improvement everyday. When ever I get the craving, I chew sunflower seeds for as long as it takes. On about day 3, I went thru 2 big bags, now a few times a day. Without the seeds I don’t know if I could have made it. I’m starting to feel pretty proud of myself, I haven’t cheated once. You’ll be fine to, go buy some seeds and hang in there.

Starting today, back to work today. Used to throw in a good 1/4 tin and work under mask until 10am coffee, the nights already been heel. But I was dipping 1.25-1.5 tins a day at 25-28$ a tin I thought it was time to quit. Just gotta keep myself busy at work over the weekend and nights, always slow and just looking for something to do.

At that price? Holy shit! That would make me quit because I would go broke dipping 2 cans a day. I’m lucky it’s 2 to 4.50$ a can around here.

It helps if you don’t keep any around. Then when you have the urge, there is nothing to turn to. It sucks, but it’s effective.

K sooo… Been chewing 2 cans a day for 33 years. I think I found the perfect combo for quitting! Acupuncture, it gets the nicotine out faster so cravings diminish! Yeah it’s expensive but hell so is chewin!
