Symptoms of Quitting Dip and Chew

Symptoms When Quitting NicotineQuitting dipping is not an easy thing… if you’re like most of us, when you quit you’ll go through some withdrawal symptoms… These are completely normal. That being said… if you are concerned about a particular symptom, by all means go to a doctor and get checked!!! This will help both your peace of mind and may catch something before it gets serious.

Dip Dreams – you’ve been dipping for years sometimes decades. Your brain is used to thinking a certain way with a certain amount of nic in it… once that’s taken away many people have “dip dreams”. These dreams range from mild to incredibly intense. Many times people will wake up after a dip dream and feel terrible because they really think that they caved. Many have reported that they can taste and smell the dip. Never fear… it’s only a dream.

Sores In Your Mouth (lip, tongue, cheek, etc.) – you’re done dipping… why does your mouth hurt so damn bad? You’ve got more sores in your mouth now than when you were dipping. What’s going on?!? There are a couple of explanations for this one. First, if you’re like most of us, you’ve found something to replace your dip to get you past the oral fixation (See Smokeless Alternatives). If you’re chewing seeds then there’s a TON of salt in your mouth that wasn’t there before. Also once you get dip out of your system the PH balance in your mouth is changing. Bottom line is this – get to a dentist and get checked out. But unless something stays around for more than two weeks you should be good to go.

Can’t Sleep – you’ve quit dipping and now you can’t sleep at all. Never fear, this is completely normal experience. It’ll take a while, but your sleep patterns will return to normal.

The Fog – you’re dizzy… you can’t think straight… your head hurts… you find yourself staring at your computer screen for hours on end not reading anything. Welcome to the dip fog. Your brain can’t handle the fact that you’re no longer feeding it dip. It might last just a couple of days and it might last a couple of weeks. Do not fret… once the fog lifts you’re well on your way to being dip free. Check out this article that Chewie has written about The Fog of Quitting Dip

Headaches – you might have one that brings you to your knees, or you might just have that dull thud feeling all day long — this too shall pass.

Sore Throat – If you’re a dipper and you quit you’re scared of anything that’s “off”. Why when you quit dipping do you suddenly get a sore throat? We’re not sure why but it happens more often than you’d think. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. This will help flush the nicotine and will help with your sore throat.

Anxiety – for years you’ve been dealing with life while medicating yourself with nicotine — it’s gone now and your body isn’t used to dealing with life without it. This condition will pass though you may want to talk to a doctor about some medication to take the edge off.

Problems “Going” – whether you know it or not, nicotine is a laxative. It’s helped keep you “regular” through all of your years of dipping. It takes some people a while to get their body adjusted to going without their natural dip laxative. Drink plenty of water and eventually this one will be “behind you”.

Hot Flashes – This one has been reported as a real doozy. Face, arms, legs, etc. can be very “warm” with some intense sweats. While this is a “symptom” it’s also been quite the trigger for some folks. Drink some water, get to the site and talk.

Depression – Many people have dipped for years or decades. Removing such an integral (though deadly) part of your life can lead to some pretty serious behavioral issues including depression. Talk to the folks on the boards as this is pretty common. As with any health issue please don’t hesitate to see a doctor as well. For more details about depression as a quitter click here.

There are a variety of other symptoms that have been attributed to quitting dip. If you don’t see yours listed, contact us and let us know about it!

30 year can a day here. I quit drinking alcohol 9 months ago and went on the patch 2 days ago. Having quit before, I know what’s coming. I didn’t go cold turkey due to brain games that may make an intense nic craving also be for alcohol. The withdrawals are still starting, just not as intense as cold turkey. I want to speed up to cold turkey but I’m easing into it in hopes off lessoning the severity of of my withdrawals.I also have a wife and 2 boys that I don’t want to snap at. Any advice on when to rip the patch off? I also have a gum graft coming up and another next year.

Finally ripped off patch last night. 20 hours in with lockjaw and intense fog. Wife is very supportive and is letting me lay down in bed and giving me space. Probably not going to sleep much for awhile, but I’ve began the march.

So today, my tongue is feeling a tad swollen, it looks kind of dry and cracked so to say, and doesn’t feel to comfortable and bled in a spot when I brushed it. Is that “normal”?? Or should I be concerned??

I have been a dipper for about 15 years (Im 35) and decided to quit 3 weeks ago. I have crazy sores in my mouth that have been freaking me out a bit. Very happy to read this blog and hear about others having the same problem when quitting.

One of the reasons I quit is because I have noticed some white spots on my tongue, cheeks, and gums. Any clue if these should go away after a period of time? Obviously, I should go see a dentist but the thought of that alone gives me anxiety. I’m trying to work up the courage but dentists scare the crap out of me.

Day 63 off the dip and counting after a 3 can a week habit for over 30 years. Quit cold turkey a few weeks after being diagnosed with leukemia (CLL). Not treating yet, I am stage 0. Had colonoscopy and endoscopy two weeks after quitting and now have gerd probably from all the tobacco juices. On totally new diet and medication. Lots of fun. Thanks Copenhagen. I threw the two full tins I had in the garbage as I cussed them out for making me so sick and every time I think about a dip I immediately think about how much damage all those years of nicotine did to my body and how lucky I am it wasn’t worse. Life is short, my recommendation to anyone still dipping is to quit now before the damage this poison does finally catches up with you and it will at some point.
The cravings are pretty much gone but I am still fighting the lightheaded/dizziness which is a daily problem. Been to ent not inner ear now mri scheduled. Now wondering if my brain is just having problems adjusting to no more nicotine or something more serious. Anyone else still fighting being lightheaded and dizzy after 2+ months off the dip. Good luck to everyone fighting this monkey, stay head strong and you will win.

I’ve been keeping up with this site ever since I quit in April and it has helped me a lot! Almost three months and I’ve been to 3 doctors and a dentist and have a clean bill of health from all but it’s been tough. After a couple weeks dealing with headaches, dizziness, and lack of sleep the depression hit me hard and I always feel as if something is wrong with me. Even after doctor visits I can’t convince myself I’m alright. Have recently been feeling neck and throat tightness and swollen lymph nodes on my left side which I just had a recent appointment and got scoped at ENT. Why can’t I convince myself nothing is wrong?

i am on day 18 of quitting after 5 years. I’ve been doing zyn for almost 2 years. After 18 days I still am dizzy all day long and random panic attacks nothing too serious because I was able to control it. But the dizziness is concerning me and if I don’t eat enough I seem to get low blood sugar which I never really had a problem with while I was dipping. From what I’ve read it’s normal but I just feel off all day long.

You bet. Similar story as Chewie. Went to ER, and urgent care thinking I was having cardiac, but tests showed normal function. Lasted weeks. Never knew what anxiety really was until my quit. An unreasonable impending sense of doom kept my mind scrambling for what was wrong with me, but it was just withdrawal and fog. Keep it up, this too shall pass. I’m just over 5 years quit and it gets easier.

Yeah I’m about 12 days in and dizziness, heart palipitations, extreme fatigue (like I could sit down and fall asleep just about anywhere) occasional headaches. I’ll say though ironically, I’ve had no urge to continue dipping. If anything this has put me off it even more.

I’m slowly winging my self off dip been a dipping most of my life and decided to make the change my first step was to replace dipping with nicotine gum that didn’t work out to well , got a bunch of sores in my mouth and really dry mouth and sore throat , so I moved to only a pouch every 4 hours first day then went to every 6 hours next step just twice a day etc .

I’m not a dipper but I am a spouse of a EX dipper who has quit in Sept 2021. Nothing seems to make him happy anymore and he is stressed all the time. I feel like I am walking on eggshells. What can I do to help support him in this time? I feel like it’s been long enough for nicotine cessation symptoms to start going away but it’s almost been a year and the symptoms are still there.

Take him to the nearest “Allen Carr Clinic Center” if u could or just order the DVD online and watch it with him it allows using nicotine while going through the film I believe that it will greatly impact his thoughts in a positive and transformative way that’s what has happened to me when i read it. 1st thing it altered my mindset 2nd it removed the fear thoughts i had in the back of my F skull that life would never be the same, social events will suck… I get emotional just talking about it cuz back then i believed i got hooked 4LIFE there was no turning back but now after 11yrs of using I’m 22 now from Morocco btw AND fortunately after i made it through i start to enjoy little things in life like a tree 🎄 animals… I fixed my Dopamine system now I have the energy to run more than 5k a day, lift weights hit the beach and swim as long as i want to. I managed to quit back in 2019 at 5am on the rooftop 100% Cold Turkey thanks to Allen’s book as well as my strong desire to quit and tbh without him probably I’ll be in cemetery now just don’t give up buddy it’s a mental game if i can that mean you can too

I quit dipping about 3 1/2 years ago. I read a lot on this site but never participated. This site did help me and that is why I am writing about it today. It gave me encouragement.

For all those just quitting, or having less than a month, hang in there. I know actual nicotine withdrawal is around 3 days but it felt like a lot longer than that for me. It probably took me 1 1/2 years of life savers, seeds, and gum to get through. My jaws were sore from all of the gum chewing. I also lost a tooth because of the candy (and the dip too). Try and stay away from the sugar.

I would equate quitting dipping to the loss a family member/friend. It is like a divorce. The addiction is that strong. How will I ever be able to fish and hunt again? How will I be able to cut the grass? How can I manage a long drive? How can I do anything??? It is part of your life. It like a third arm. Everything revolves around the next dip. Where is my stupid spit cup??? I LOVE YOU COPENHAGEN more than my FAMILY!!!!

Quitting sucks but you need to regain control of your life. It is hard and not fun. It is work. It is prayer. It is talking to people on this website if necessary. It is doing whatever it takes to quit. Stop making excuses. Stop telling yourself I will quit tomorrow!!!!! That is INSANITY. Trust me I know. the journey is painful and long.

GOOD NEWS!!!! Once you get through it, it GOES AWAY. I can still fish, hunt, work the garden, drive down the road and anything else I want to do without the DEATH in my mouth. I also look at some of my buddies still in the struggle and feel really bad for their wives. Who in the world would want to kiss someone with 1 thousand specs of stinky crap in your teeth, mouth, shirt, beard, lazyboy chair, etc. LOL

NO MORE NASTY SPIT BOTTLES AND DRINKING MY OWN SPIT BECAUSE I FORGOT I SPIT IN IT!!!!!!

HANG IN THERE BROTHERS AND SISTERS. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Hey long time listener first time caller. Been chewing for around 15 years, it’s been 4 days cold turkey now. Today has been by far the biggest challenge. Sore throat since the second day is quite annoying, I do get these strange surges of energy where I feel like I just need to do something, I’ve been trying to exercise and productive around the house to get my mind off it. I also have been experiencing this ringing sound in my ears not sure what that’s about but I do think it is related. I don’t feel angry or grumpy or anything just super restless and a relentless hankering and mental fogginess. I’ve been eating everything I can find, I don’t think I’ve ever had an appetite quite like the one I’ve had the last couple of days. Anyways my dad actually told me about this group and Said it helped him so I’ve enjoyed reading other people’s comments and stuff so thank you for that.

Hi all, I had been on the road to quitting but I caved and had a dip yesterday. Before yesterday my last dip was two weeks ago. I am now starting over. Today is back to day 1. What is odd to me is that today I had some of the initial withdrawal symptoms hit me. Specifically a tingling/numbness in the jaw area and some in the arms. I experienced these same feelings about a week into my initial attempt to quit. Just wondering if anyone has gone through a similar experience.

I’ve been reading the comments from this page the last few days. Encourages me that many people have went through what I’m going through. I’ve been dipping Copenhagen for about 10 years. I honestly didn’t want to quit, I enjoyed it. There was nothing like putting in a dip early in the morning or after any meal. I still think about it daily. I’m going on 30 days dip free, decided to quit cold turkey. Only symptoms I have dealt with is a sore throat that’s lasted around 3 weeks and still ongoing. Slightly Swollen lymph nodes on one side of my neck and of course the dip cravings. After I quit it scared me to death getting symptoms, do yourself a favor and don’t visit any google sites because all it does it make your anxiety and stress go through the roof. Stay strong all my brothers and we can defeat this together!

It is tough. I have had day 4s before. I don’t have a support group. Have patches if it gets too bad and heck there is always alcohol

Nicotine paralyzes the cilia in your airway. When you stop ingesting nicotine, they begin to start doing the things they were meant to do, which is slowly moving stuff out of your lungs and airways…that’s likely what’s going on.
Of course, you could always just be sick.

Quitting dipping probably wasn’t the sole cause of shingles. You immune system most likely was depressed from something else. Anyone can get shingles if you’ve had chicken pox. Quitting dip makes your body go through some strenuous chemical changes but IMO I don’t think that was the cause.

I don’t know what caused be to do it this time I normally have made it about 6 to 8 hours before I go back on. this is the longest I have gone in 24 years. I guess something clicked this time, please wish me luck and pray for all those that will deal with me on this journey.

Hi, I’m 44, have chewed for 20 years. I have chewed grizzly wintergreen pouches for 10 years. In June, I started suffering from panic attacks out of the blue. All the docs have told me my brain chemistry is changing. I tried several meds and they all fucked me up badly mentally. Then I got to thinking, I have a pouch in my mouth sun up to sun down….thats a ton of nicotine and maybe my problem. So I’m 36 hours quit, praying this will cure my panic, but I know it will get worse before it gets better. I’m struggling so hard, how to I get into a group?

Hi WhiskeySolo. Just passed my five year mark. Was chewing about 1.5 cans a day of grizzly wintergreen for a really really long time. When I wasn’t chewing I had nicotine gum in my mouth. Panic attacks and a complete inability to sleep got me in the Dr. office. I still remember him looking at me while saying “do you think your nicotine addiction has anything to do with your anxiety?” His look was kind but I got the point. I did wind up starting lexapro about six months after I quit and all of that is gone now. It gets so much better. Hope to see you in a group. Will check the November 2021 to see if you are there. It works if you want it to.
