Symptoms When Quitting NicotineQuitting dipping is not an easy thing… if you’re like most of us, when you quit you’ll go through some withdrawal symptoms… These are completely normal. That being said… if you are concerned about a particular symptom, by all means go to a doctor and get checked!!! This will help both your peace of mind and may catch something before it gets serious.

Dip Dreams – you’ve been dipping for years sometimes decades. Your brain is used to thinking a certain way with a certain amount of nic in it… once that’s taken away many people have “dip dreams”. These dreams range from mild to incredibly intense. Many times people will wake up after a dip dream and feel terrible because they really think that they caved. Many have reported that they can taste and smell the dip. Never fear… it’s only a dream.

Sores In Your Mouth (lip, tongue, cheek, etc.) – you’re done dipping… why does your mouth hurt so damn bad? You’ve got more sores in your mouth now than when you were dipping. What’s going on?!? There are a couple of explanations for this one. First, if you’re like most of us, you’ve found something to replace your dip to get you past the oral fixation (See Smokeless Alternatives). If you’re chewing seeds then there’s a TON of salt in your mouth that wasn’t there before. Also once you get dip out of your system the PH balance in your mouth is changing. Bottom line is this – get to a dentist and get checked out. But unless something stays around for more than two weeks you should be good to go.

Can’t Sleep – you’ve quit dipping and now you can’t sleep at all. Never fear, this is completely normal experience. It’ll take a while, but your sleep patterns will return to normal.

The Fog – you’re dizzy… you can’t think straight… your head hurts… you find yourself staring at your computer screen for hours on end not reading anything. Welcome to the dip fog. Your brain can’t handle the fact that you’re no longer feeding it dip. It might last just a couple of days and it might last a couple of weeks. Do not fret… once the fog lifts you’re well on your way to being dip free. Check out this article that Chewie has written about The Fog of Quitting Dip

Headaches – you might have one that brings you to your knees, or you might just have that dull thud feeling all day long — this too shall pass.

Sore Throat – If you’re a dipper and you quit you’re scared of anything that’s “off”. Why when you quit dipping do you suddenly get a sore throat? We’re not sure why but it happens more often than you’d think. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. This will help flush the nicotine and will help with your sore throat.

Anxiety – for years you’ve been dealing with life while medicating yourself with nicotine — it’s gone now and your body isn’t used to dealing with life without it. This condition will pass though you may want to talk to a doctor about some medication to take the edge off.

Problems “Going” – whether you know it or not, nicotine is a laxative. It’s helped keep you “regular” through all of your years of dipping. It takes some people a while to get their body adjusted to going without their natural dip laxative. Drink plenty of water and eventually this one will be “behind you”.

Hot Flashes – This one has been reported as a real doozy. Face, arms, legs, etc. can be very “warm” with some intense sweats. While this is a “symptom” it’s also been quite the trigger for some folks. Drink some water, get to the site and talk.

Depression – Many people have dipped for years or decades. Removing such an integral (though deadly) part of your life can lead to some pretty serious behavioral issues including depression. Talk to the folks on the boards as this is pretty common. As with any health issue please don’t hesitate to see a doctor as well. For more details about depression as a quitter click here.

  1. Been going thru a can every two days for 10 years. Quit Jan 6, 2017 and every day gets easier. For me it’s been more a mind game than physical withdrawals. Very liberating to not be hiding behind the can anymore. I have several friends that has also recently quit. It helps to have others to lean on if needed. In my opinion in order to be successfull you need a good reason to quit. My reason is my family and I feel I was being selfish by not giving this up given the health risk and the example I was setting for my son. If I can do this anyone can!

    1. Day 66. Haven’t slept in well in over a week. The only nights I get any sleep at all is when I’m exhausted to the point of passing out. Bought a tin this evening and thinking about having one. The insomnia is brutal.

      1. Day 20 don’t do it, order some Smokey mountain or get some seeds. Anything to not use the real shit. I wanna a real dip all the time but I know I can’t have one cause if I have another one it will never end. I don’t wanna lose anything from dip. Hold onto that tin as a safety blanket but don’t open it. Good luck stay strong

    2. I chewed at least a tin a day for 22 yrs. I started notice bodily changes, and my wife commenting on my breath, I decided on this past Christmas Im going to give myself a present. I bought the highest dose nicotine patch, and by having a positive attitude Im gonna beat chewing. My mouth feels better, my bloodwork is becoming close to normal. Here’s the kicker folks, I did some quick math on how much Ive spent over the yrs and I got sick, I figured almost $18,000 on the conservative side. That is a lot of gas for my truck, i couldve finished paying my mortgage off, a really nice trip to Europe, if I had kids almost a yrs college tutition at a state school. So if you need motivators there ya go

  2. Can a day for 22 years. 2 weeks clean now. My jaw pain is now gone, glands ain’t sore and no more headaches/ear aches.
    Still want a dip non stop. Nuff ta drive a feller nuts.

      1. Day 11. Dipped for 30 yrs. 3 cans/week. I use hard candy or beef sticks to keep in my mouth. Alot of water!! Plus keep a basket of fruit Fresh/Dried on my desk!! Done with all the nicotine feels sooo much better.

    1. Dip for 6 years just once before I went to bed every night but it was a horseshoe usually go threw a can every two nights. Shits weird I’m just overly worried about mouth cancer

      I’ve been dipping for 10-15 years and on day two of quitting because I started experiencing jaw pain, with cheek swelling as well. Also felt kind of like an ear ache. Of course plugging in those symptoms they all came back as cancer so I was just seeing if anyone else had these symptoms but quick and they got better? Message me back if you can.

  3. YOU can and will kick this habit! You’ll be fine, remind yourself it will benefit you 10X fold!! Not only will you save money, save on possible hospital bills, you will survive and pass your story and courage on to others! YOU CAN DO IT! Keep your mind busy doing anything you can think of – hang around non-smoking/non-chewing friends. Build/join your own support group! When the addiction is over, after a few days, the habit will deteriorate and you will go from 1 day to 1 year fast! If you are having a hard time quitting check with your doctor, find support, remind yourself it’s for the best, you can and will do it! Stay busy with life and push back any thought of chew to oblivion! 365 days ago was my last chew and not 1 day has passed which I am not grateful to have quit!

    1. I’m 54 years old, dipped for the last 12 years, smoked for 25 years before that. I picked up the can to quit smoking. I quit drinking 13 months ago. Now I’m tobacco free for 6 days. Urges are there but the worse part is the sleeplessness. I take a prescription sleep aid that gets me about 5 hours of sleep per night. Now the part that bothers me most is; I will be receiving coupons in the mail from Copenhagen! Not fair! I noticed the last time I got them that there is a “remove me from mailing list” option on the envelope. That will be the test for me, tear them up, remove from list or use the coupon. If I can quit drinking I can quit chewing! Willpower must take over. I want to keep my own teeth. Stay strong and pray my friends!

        I wanted to see how your experience with sleeplessness turned out. Have you been able to fall asleep without a sleep aid anymore? At what point did that happen for you?

        I am on day 21 and have not been able to fall asleep without the help of Ambien. Even then I get 3-4 hours and cannot fall back asleep. Legs are very restless as well.

    1. Day 5 my mouth is killing me, too many seeds I think, this is harder then I thought, all I think about is having a dip. Stay strong need to quit for myself and my family

      Quit chewing 2 weeks ago. Got a boy that don’t need ta be seeing his daddy disfigured as he grows up. His daddy don’t need to be a burden to him.

  4. Glad to find this forum! I have been “slowing down” for the last few months after chewing for the last 15 years. That seemed to help and now I have been completely done for 3 days. Last night I had a real test, stopping at a gas station for milk and it took EVERYTHING i had not to buy a tin. Glad I didn’t!!

    Like a lot of you I have kids (two boys) and I wanted to quit before they figured it out. Any body have any luck with the nicotine gum? Seems like you’re just keeping the nic in the system to me. But if anyone else has or is having success with it, I might give it a shot.

    1. I’ve been dipping a can a day for about 6 years, quit once for 9 months then had a stressful event (woman troubles) that got me back on. First time I used fake snuff mixed in with real stuff, but that was horrible, so I switched to the gum. I feel like its cheating so I try to avoid taking the gum as much as possible and see how fast I can ween off it entirely. I presently on Day 5 (New Year Resolution too) and been doing about 4-6 pieces of 4mg gum a day. Always leave it in your pocket, cause those urges can sneak up on ya. Best of luck – I have two young kids that im doing it for too – and to save about $1,700/year….

  5. 17 hrs in…. I’d kick a bewborn puppy for a can of Cope! This sucks! 2+ cans a day. Cold Turkey! Gonna get fat! Don’t know how to act! WTF was I thinking?? Stupid New years resolutions…

    1. DON’T give in. It gets better. KTC got me off Cope after 30 years of the stuff. Cold turkey. The plan works, stick to it. It’s only a few days and it gets better. Stick with the group. Post roll. Someday you’ll be nic free for 4 years too!

    2. You can do it, I’ve literally been sitting here debating with myself for hours, to walk to the store and get me a can. Logged on here and saw that I wasn’t alone. Shit sucks…

    3. Day 5 and the headaches and no energy dizzyness is killing me, feel like I’m groggy from taking night time medicine all day. I’m trying to hold in but 1 chew will make it better instantly and I use to chew a can a day.

      1. I’m on day 4 and I’ve bought a can and told my wife that I’m not ready to quit yet, but I haven’t put a dip in yet I’m just holding the can. My mouth is full of sores from seeds and whatever else I’ve had all the symptoms and I cannot justify why I decided to do this but now I’m stuck feeling guilty like I owe it to someone to quit. I can’t concentrate on any thing and I wanted to strangle my kids last night. I have been eating non stop and coffe doesn’t wake me like a dip and a Mountain Dew dose….. I hate the bacoff crap it taste nothing like natural cope and I can’t do anymore seeds…. I don’t know what to do, I don’t really want to quit but now that I’ve started this I feel like I’m stuck…. the struggle is real and if I could just get some sleep or something maybe I would be more susceptible to not needing it. I keep reading to stay away from my triggers, but I can’t exactly stay away from my work or my kids….. idk what to do it helps reading these things but I feel like there’s just a few on here going through this then there’s some that are 90 days in but still coming back to the site , dose that mean 90 days in your still desperate and need to read something to continue to stay off ? Idk that I can live that way I feel like I don’t have an incentive that the reward of a dip could not be better I’m ranting and scatter brained in sorry is anyone worse in my shoes ?

        1. Cody, stay with it. I quit after chewing for 20+ years. It is very hard, but your wife and kids are worth it. My boss just found out he has cancer from chewing Copenhagen, for over 30 years. The withdrawals you’re having are much better than finding out you have cancer, your kids need you around. Stay positive, you can do it. It was the hardest thing I ever did. I ended up in the hospital, my heart freaking out from the nicotine withdrawal. But I stayed the course. Life is very good without dip.

        2. Day 4 myself, quit about 20 years ago, lasted about 3 years and I fell of wagon hard, totally stupid thing picking up a can so I could stay awake. Stay away from alcohol, that wont help a bit. Nothing like spitting in fresh bottle. Just kind of making my way through the day in a fog, what I can tell you is it gets better pretty fast. You’re going to be an ill tempered SOB for a couple of weeks, so spend a bunch of time outside or in the garage so your family can be spared your new personality. Doesn’t it piss you off that a can of scrapping off the tobacco floor can control you? That alone should tell you how bad it is for you and these companies put additional stuff in there to control your life. You owe it to yourself to quit. Stay strong, don’t let them win.

  6. I’m on day 4 and the struggle is real. I’ve been on/off for 13 years with the longest being two years off. I don’t remember it ever being difficult to stop, but I guess my tin a day habit has caught up to me. Right now the fog is the worst, I can’t do anything just sitting in my cube starring at my computer. I’ve woken up a ton during the night the last two nights which I never do. My anger and irritability is certainly showing up as well as being very restless and anxious. Just a rollercoaster of emotions. All I can think about is packing a lip, grizzly wintergreen… I know I have strong will power so I will persevere, but damn this sucks. Lots of gum and mary jane to fight through.

Man I have not had a dip since Monday night going on day 3 constant heart sinking and anxiety , really dizzy and light headed some chest pain when I lay down comes and goes, I did about 2-3 cans a week for about 2 years. I hope this anxiety dies down within a week, but I fear it will be longer. I am using bupropion and that helps cravings but not withdrawal symptoms.

    1. Trust me man, It sucks. I am on day 28 and still have pretty rough cravings. I have had jaw pain, Head aches, Stiff neck, Heart burn, everything…. It will get better. Hang in there brother!

    2. I’m on day 63 after 30 years of dipping a can a day. There are always going to be times when you want one especially after that meal. There are sleepless nights and you’re also going to notice that your breath is going to smell horrible it’s like you’re gums are giving up all of that crap that you’ve shoved into them over the years. I’ve been chewing peppermint Lifesavers to help with the breath and The Sensation of having something in my mouth but knowing that I’m not going to have to worry as much about mouth cancer or gingivitis is important to me. Keep up the fight man it’s a struggle. But the good news is I’m saving $100 a month.

  8. 4th day and this shit can get in the car and go to hell. Anything this addictive shouldn’t be legal.

    Honestly, I love to dip. But the most critical point of quitting is that it represents an ever rising noncompensateable risk to the user. Don’t quit because if someone else. Quit because you don’t want to be a sucker.

  9. I have consistently dipped since i was 12 years old, I am now 22. I started on Grizzly wintergreen and went to Copenhagen Long Cut and never looked back. I am 21 days into my cold turkey quit. It seems like my cravings, Jaw irritation where i use to put my dip, and anxiousness has gotten worse these last couple days. I just ordered Bacc Off as a substitute for my oral fixation so hopefully that will help.

  10. On my 5th day of quitting after a year and a half of dipping (about a tin every two days). Noticing a feeling like something is stuck in my throat. No cough or mucus symptoms… Sometimes feels a little scratchy. Anyone know if this is normal after quitting, or should there be a concern for throat cancer?

      1. Yeah from what I’ve heard it’s all normal to have? That’s right where mine is, almost feels like a chip is stuck in the Adam’s apple. Comes and goes for me, not sure for you

    1. Same here has well. Had some sharp jaw pains where I used to keep my dip, throat felt like something was sticking in it, and one of my teeth feels numb where I used to keep my dip.

  11. On my 4th day now. It is going better then I expected. I actually ate dinner last night and didn’t immediately want to put a dip in. Super scared to work on my car or go play hockey though. At least it is winter now and I won’t have to worry about fishing / yard work for a while. Been on a 1.5 cans a day for 8 years now.

  12. I’m a new attorney and I used dip as a study aid all through college, law school, and studying for the bar exam. I kept telling myself I would quit at a less stressful time in my life but I’ve come to accept there will never be a non-stressful time period for me now. I was scared to give up dip at first in case my concentration lapsed, and naturally with my job I need to be laser focused all the time. I’m hoping if I can go cold turkey for a week, I will at least not depend on it as a crutch to concentrate. It’s not the healthiest method I’m sure, but I’ve been using lot’s of non-caffeinated soda, green tea, and beef jerky as my new crutches. I’m just tired of being dependent on a damn pouch and it’s going to wreck my teeth and health. Hopefully by the time the initial fog wears off I’ll be able to focus even sharper than before.

    1. Joe, I’m an attorney also. Been practicing at a large firm for about a year, and have finally had enough. I’m six days into my quit and hope to stay quit. I billed 11 hours yesterday and wanted one really bad. Just have to keep pushing! We can do this.

    2. Joe, I am also a new attorney. I chewed the whole way through college, law school and the bar. It sucked these first few months at my firm trying to constantly have a chew while not letting partners see me. I am 48 hours in and feel awful but I got to think this will be worth it in the end.

    3. Joe. Finally I hear from someone going through a similar experience. I’m preparing for my CPA and work as an accountant. I can defiantly relate to trying to conceal the dip from employees and clients. Honestly I feel it’s become more of a distraction yet the addiction and anxiety of messing up the numbers this close to our annual audit is nerve racking.

  13. I’m 47 yrs old. Been on Copenhagen since I was 14. Can a day or more. Trying to go cold turkey. Lots of sugarless gum being consumed. Irritability is pretty high but just trying to remember to take a step back and not react to harshly to things. What have you guys experienced in terms of withdrawls? How long before things began to settle down. We all know the mental side of the REAL killer. Breaking those habits. Let me know. Any help is appreciated!!!

  14. I quit about 2 weeks ago and it’s been rough. I feel like I haven’t had the energy to do the shit I usually do, my throat kinda hurts on my left side (side I dipped on most) not sure why it’s only one side. Haven’t had headaches or trouble sleeping. How long do these damn symptoms last I feel like I’m sure a lot of you do or did, starting my day doesn’t feel complete without a chew on my way to work. I’m 26 been chewing a can a day of grizzly or cope for 10 years. I’m not gonna let this shit break me, but if anyone has any good remedies to help that would be great! I’m using baccoff pouches they help, I think it’s the nicotine withdrawal still kicking my ass. But in glad to hear the sore throat and stuff isn’t abnormal I was kind of starting to worry.

  15. Just wanted to say I have dipped for close to 10yrs atleast a can a day. Always wondered how & when I was ever gonna quit if ever. Then just 2 days ago a friend of mine died of cancer & he was a year younger at age 33. I don’t know why, but something happened & it scared me so bad I haven’t had a dip since. I was gonna give in the first day & just tell myself I’ll cut back, but seriously when I would go to grab the can, I just got so scared & affraid. Something I’d never felt before. Anyways I took that as a sign. Day 3 now. While I dont have any cravings I do have the “fog”. What really sucks too is I just bought 10 cans, because it was on sale. Long story longer if your thinking about quiting what change my mind was I didn’t want to find out I have cancer & wish I would have done something long ago. It’s not worth my life.

  16. All I recently noticed a small almost like a stretch mark but it feels like a lump, in side my cheek just behind where my dip Use to sit. Has anyone experienced this no sores, no bleeding nothing like that just worries me. Im 5 days into the quit.

  17. Its hard to believe but not so long ago chewing and dipping was not looked down on. That’s just what boys did or at least were I grew up. My dad use to give me tobacco if i asked him. I started dipping when I was 9 and dipped till I was 47. I think about all the money and harm i have done to my body, I was a dipper that finally never had to spit because I swallowed it. Anytime someone seen me I had a dip in. I had been doing it so long you could not tell I was dipping. I was on the strong stuff and it was just a big part of my life (my best friend). I started having so much issues with heart burn and Indigestion I finally had to quit. I ended up in the emergency room about 3 weeks after I quit. Heart racing high blood pressure and I had no desire to ever dip again. To be honest i had high blood pressure before I quit. Not sure why my heart was racing. I was put on high blood pressure medicine and I still never felt right. I finally got on a good acid reducer and started feeling a little better 6 months later. I had intense anxiety and still have it a little today. I still crave it from time to time but i will never go back. I know my case is extreme but I quit so if the worst can quit you can to. I didn’t tell you every thing I had been through because of dipping, lets just say it can affect your relationship with others. Hang in there you can make it

  18. New to this site. Day 1 no dip and 2 lozenges day 2, 2 dips 1 lozenges . Day 3 .1 dip 2 lozenges . Day 4. 3 lozenges day 5 is tomorrow and my jaw hurts and I a canker sore. 26 years …. I wish it was over

    At least the physical withdraw symptoms didn’t return. This is one tough habit to get over!

    1. What about headaches? I’ve been enraged with headaches last 4 days straight almost like migraines. I quit oct 1st and been going for 6 years heavy.

  20. Been Cope free for three weeks and my lips and tongue are numb, my tongue sticks to my lower jaw at night, things don’t taste right, and I’m pissed and unable to concentrate. My wife’s happy though. That means a lot. Glad to see my complaints are normal. I’ve tried to quit dozens of times. Made if for several years once, hopefully I’ll stay off. Darn, I do like good cigars though….that’s my fall of the wagon trigger…..crap….. Bob

  21. My story is not normal, started dip a year ago and stopped after 7 months of the fucking habit. I’m 2 months without it today but the battle is a hard as its ever been. I went to the doctors today and then said every thing looks fine and they give me some medicine to take. But everything still doesn’t feel fine. Is this normal? I’m going to a dentist on Monday, was wondering if anyone had any great recovery stories. Thanks

    1. Chewed less than a can a day for about 2 1/2 years.Iam on day 48 and I am having issues myself. Sore throat, irritable gums,headaches and some others..I am going to dentist tomorrow and have ANOTHER Doctor’s apt. Next week. Was woundering the same thing as you..

I was a Skoal mint pouches guy for 5+ years, “quit” on and off several times over the last 2 by trying to cycle to snus, but anytime I stopped resulted in a relapse dip sesh in a moment of weakness. Not sure what did it for me but a month ago I decided to go cold turkey and haven’t broken down yet. I’m actually not tempted to dip because I’ve realized its gross and not good for me, but I’m getting rocked by quitting symptoms. Terrible anxiety, waking up in the morning with the hot flashes described above, and had a pretty annoying mouth sore that has pretty much healed up. Part of me feels better because I’m not dipping but part of me feels shitty because I’m not dipping. I was the type of dude that woke up and threw a dip in on my way to work. Any feedback from anyone who’s been there is much appreciated!


  24. I’m 36 hours into my quit, I’m litterally counting the hours.. I’m about to kick this old habits ass.. Been a steady dipper for 8 years and these withdrawal symptoms are intense. I just keeping telling myself I’m going to save that $100 a month, it’s best for my health, and most importantly I’m quitting for my son.

    2. I’m 50 I started chewing at 12 years old I’m also a truck driver I chewed a can a day for years March 1 2016 was the last chew I had it was very hard and still is very hard at times .you can do it don’t stop trying .

    3. Hey, Chris. I quit 3 weeks ago tomorrow and can say that it has gotten easier. Fake chew helps but what’s helped me the most is thinking of the consequences, and noticing health affects like lower blood pressure, more energy,etc. I hope you can find something to make it worth it.

  25. What do you guys think of bacc-off and grinds. I know grinds is simply coffee grind pouches, and bacc-off is tea leaves. I was just wondering your guys thoughts on these products and do they help you quit?

    1. I’m personally a HUGE fan of fake dip. For some, it’s an absolutely outstanding tool in your quit arsenal. For others, it’s “too close” to the real thing, but at least for me personally I used fake dip every day for a good 200+ days into my quit.

      As for Grinds & BaccOff I’m a fan. There are some flavors that are outstanding and others that aren’t as good, but that’s a personal preference.

    2. I have been using baccoff roughcut. Has taken a couple of weeks of mixing it with my chew but completely using baccoff now. Now have to deal with the oral fixation of it. very close to chew. It does lose its flavor fast though

    3. Im actually using baccoff right now I’m 3 days strong been chewing a can a day for about 7 years and my first 3 days have been miserable. There was a couple times those “hot flashes” made me throw a dip in. It was bad.

      1. I’ve been using the Baccoff because it’s loose. Yeah, no joke about this being tough. This is day 5 after 40 years of copenhagen and my whole body / mind is revolting!! Can’t sleep, hot flashes, PVC’s of the heart, irritability, can’t concentrate on anything.

        1. I’ve also been a cope man for 40 plus years, 4 months ago I switched to skoal because of mouth sores. The sores went away but the sore throat and neck pain got worse, went back to cope and everything went well. I’ve quit now for 6 days and the neck pain and throat pain are very bothersome.

    4. I used Bacc-Off Gen II pouches which tasted great, but I found that I really like TeaZa Pouches the best. Tastes amazing, doesnt remind me of wintergreen chew, fills that oral fixation, has antioxidants, caffeine and you can put it in water for tea. Its all around the best product out there in my opinion.

    5. I personally like bacc off, wintergreen. Works great for me becuase it tastes very similar to cope wintergreen. I am on day 1 of quitting 14hrs in. I quit probably 6 times in the last 6 years amd i dont know why I keep putting myself through this pain.

  26. Hi I am on day 41 of quitting. I dipped about a can a week maybe a little more maybe a little less. I have been having horrible anxiety this entire time, palpatations, depression, feeling faint, stomach growling, dizziness. I mean you name it I have had it. I cant believe how dependent on it I was. If anyone of you have these same symptoms let me know how you dealt with them or are dealing with them and I can also give you my feedback.

    1. Hey buddy I quit March 3, 2016. I felt it all too, but trust me, don’t break in! I haven’t in 5 months! Those symptoms will be gone in a week buddy. Mine took 2 weeks then they slowly died down. Don’t worry about it, relax your mind and pray to God, that’s what got me through it. I’ll pray for you.

    2. Hi I am on day 42 of my quit and my anxiety has been insane from not sleeping well, to almost like a numbness feeling at times. and definitely dizziness. I am just dealing with them day to day right now. How did you make it through?

    3. I had these same symptoms as u i.e. anxiety, depression, palpitations, sinking heart, mild chest pain, headache (the pain usually moved from one place to another in the head. But was always mild pain), stomach pulsation, drowsiness (a little bit of blacky infront of eyes whenever woke up from sittinv or lying). These were my symtoms after dipping. It’s been almost 24 hours I have’nt dipped

I am on day 4 of quitting, chewed about 18 years and i would chew over a log a week, i have terrible pain in my glands, and jaw line, in my ears and now in my head, i have been nauctious for the past day, i am a bit freaked out but i do grind my teeth hard as it is, i’ve almost chewed through my mouth guard, i hope its just the grinding and withdrawals…

      Totally normal. I went through the exact same thing. I went to the dentist and had 4 Oral Cancer Screenings my first month quit I explained how I had just quit dip and he totally understood my worries, then went to ENT to have throat scoped, and finally had Upper GI performed all came back totally clean. Cost me over 2 grand to do all of that but I needed those tests to help me relax in my mind that I was healthy. If you have concerns go get checked by your doc it will help put you at ease. I am now on Day 151 and all of those symptoms are gone.

    2. I’ve been nauseous the last few days. I’ve been taking Chantix which helps with the withdrawals some but I still have them at times. I think the nausea is normal but I’ve been coughing phlegm every morning and every time I wake up from a nap. The crazy thing is I haven’t smoked in 1314 years but I’m breathing better now. I haven’t quit cold turkey but have cutdown from 1.5 cans of cope long cut, to just under a can. I don’t think the dosage of Chantix is correct for extreme nicotine addiction, and I still have to be around people, so I’m gradually dropping it.

      The Chantix blocks the effect of nicotine so I’m told, and it has helped.


    3. Day one of quitting (again). Been chewing a can a day for 16 years (31 now) and I have finally realized I need to get serious. For the first time ever I reasearched smokeless tobaco stats and was shocked to learn that a can a day is about the equivalent of smoking 5 packs a day. I did manage to quit for about 3 months back in 2014, however a situation sprang up and I immediately turned back to my Cope to cope…I have a question: Does anyone else feel dizzy when chewing the nicotine gum? I’m chewing 2mg every 2 hours, and I am getting a head rush. Is it from lack of nicotine or what?

      1. If you’re chewing the gum you’re maintaining your addiction and prolonging your agony. The gum contains nicotine, which is what you’re addicted to.

        As for the dizziness, I’m not quite sure. Could be lack of nicotine, or could be too much nicotine. Could also be a difference in “grade” of nic.

      2. I just chew a lot of Dentine Ice. My problem is I will go a couple of Months then I will pass by the one store that has my cope and I am back on it for 3 weeks and it goes on and on

    4. Derrick, I’m having the same issue. One week in, and everything went haywire. Constant pain in jaw, glands swollen, ear problems. I got checked by two doctors and a dentist and had a panoramic X-ray done of my head. It’s a mixture of both withdrawals and TMJ, which is a nice little present left over from dipping for 25 years. And I grind my teeth at night as well, but more from the withdrawals. Hang in there! – Jack

    5. I’ve been of chew for 7 days. I’ve had palpitations, sore jaw line (where I used to keep my dip), tooth ache on my dip side, sore throat (like something is stuck in it).

    1. Day 15 here. 14 was brutal. Driving 400 miles home and would have caved except for the Baccoff and dill pickle sunflower seeds. Copenhagen for over 25 years. Over the hump now and committed but man it is tough. Lotsa sleepless nights, sweats, fog head and general feelings of being lost. Hang tough and just do it! Every day gets easier than the last.

I recently quit chewing Grizzly Wintergreen Long Cut, I would chew a tin every night in a 4 hour span while playing video games for around 3 years….it has been 10 days and I’ve had diarrhea, constipation, sore neck, headaches, night sweats and a fever, accompanied with canker sores in spots where I used to put my dips. I have been in what they call “the fog” as well and I really just can not wait for this to be over, I didn’t quit because I was afraid of cancer or because I didn’t like it anymore, I just quit cold turkey to help my fiancé quit smoking cigarettes, and my symptoms are 100xs worse than what she is experiencing. I’ve also had some trouble sleeping and I wake up way to early along with minor aggravation and the hair on top of my head is sensitive (read that comes with stress headaches)….this all normal?

    1. I had a lot of the same problems when I quit. My stomach was a mess, headaches, I just didn’t feel right. It goes away, just stay strong and on track.

  30. I quit dipping a few months ago now. It hasn’t been easy! I’m really concerned about the way my jaw feels. It doesn’t hurt. But it doesn’t feel right. I went to the dentist shortly after I quit, and everything came back fine. I’m scared because it doesn’t feel right. If anyone has experience with this, I would appreciate it if you would let me know what you have discovered. Maybe I’m just being crazy. Or paranoid! Thanks for any information you can give me.

    1. Mike I also have the same feeling. But apparently I think it’s all in your head. I came back from two dentist and they both said I was fine. So just take it easy and stop being paranoid. If the doc says your OK your OK.

        1. He right. Your head totally messed with you. I thought my jaw was swollen and I had a tumor growing. Everything was actually normal. This shit is awful.

    2. My jaw has been killing me to on the side I dipped. I am about two weeks into my quit. Today its not hurting like it was but i have tingling sensation. Im so mad at myself

  31. I chewed for over 10 years, and haven’t chewed in almost 8 months. I quit cold turkey by using jerky chew and trident. I drank a ton of water to flush the crap out of my system as well. I still have cravings once or twice a day but nothing like when I first quit. My advice to you is to not use the word try. Say you are quitting, if you say you are trying to quit it just gives you an excuse to start back up because you tried.

  32. I had dipped for 16 years. Stopped for about 10 years, had no desire whatsoever. Never even thought about it.. Then one day on a farm I decided to have a dip with some old friends for old time memories. One of them gave me a can and I figured I finish it.. Then I started chewing again.. I quit after 3 years for close to 18 months.. Went through a stressful period and decided I would just chew for a few weeks.. that turned into 4 years… 54 days ago I decided to quit before I get cancer, have a stroke, or lose my teeth ETC. Plus to, stop the heartburn, get rid of the disgusting breath, waste $150 a month, grossing everyone out with spilled spit cups, having to hold my spit while talking to someone, not rush things so I can get a dip in.. ETC..

    Here’s my experience, the first 4-5 days are rough.. drink 100% organic cranberry juice, go to the sauna or steam room, get to the gym, have lemon drops or cinnamon gum, let everyone know you quit.. pick a day coming up then quit..

    it gets a lot easier after day 10 but then around day 20 you start getting urges.. time them, you will realize they only last 2-3 minutes.. have sex, play a sport, do push up.. something during that time.. take the money you are saving and commit right away to something physical.. yoga, personal trainer, playing hockey, shooting range.. something you love that you normally wouldn’t waste $150 a month on..

    after day 30 you think I’m totally over this and then around day 40- 50 they come back.. for me it’s after I have coffee.. I switched to iced green tea with a splash of lemonade.. that helps BIG time but I still get the urge and just force myself to get to day 60.. then day 70.. then day 80.. ETC..

    bottom line, if you can get through the first 5 days, you can get through the next but you have to hang tough.. your stronger then a bad habit..

    know this, the cravings go from 5 minutes 30 times a day to 4 minuets 320 times a day to 5 times a day for a minute to not even a thought..

    never think 10 years later you can have one dip…


  33. Hello, i started about 8 months ago or possibly longer. I have come terms to quit and i tell you quitting cigs was way easier then this. My anxiety has not let up i am going to get some anxiety pills to help. But i tell you i am so happy to give this up, though in my head it is constantly telling me to get some and yet i ignore it. I am on day 5 and it feels like forever.

  34. Here are my top 5 tips that helped me quit, or beat the urges.

    5. Avoid old habits, by making new ones
    4. Exercise: Get out more, walk, go jogging
    3. Music: helps me focus, keep positive
    2. Look at pictures of what dipping causes. (must have during worst urges)

  35. so I’m 22 years old and have been either smoking or dipping since I was 18. I quit cold turkey 7 days ago and the only side effect I’ve experienced was constipation, but I found that sunflower seeds made that go away literally within 2 hours. Rooting for everybody, and with my addictive personality, I know if I can quit anyone can!

    1. The dip rage is real. Playing video games all day to get my mind off the snuff, but whenever I lose in the video game I scream and swear like never before. Man it is embarrassing and uncontrollable, on day 3 so only a few more tough days before I am over the hump.

  36. Chewie!!! In four days I’ll be gettin’ married. Decided today to quit Grizzly (been dippin’ 34 years). I have two paragraphs of wedding vows memorized. After reading this site, I’m wondering if “the Fog” is gonna make it so I can’t remember my vows right during the ceremony. What are your thoughts on this? Should I get the wedding done, THEN quit?

    1. Wow. Tough call for sure. On one hand, you’ll never hear me tell someone that dipping is good idea for any length of time. I fully believe that the second best day to quit dipping is today. The best would be yesterday.

      That said, I also fully understand that you WILL go through withdrawal. It’s a fact of quitting. However, I’ll add that not everyone goes through the fog to the degree that I did and you will have a TON of adrenaline flowing seeing as you’re (I’m assuming here) excited about getting married.

      You may very well “get lucky” and be so busy getting married that you don’t even think about the fact that you just quit dipping.

      If you do decide to continue I’d strongly, strongly, STRONGLY urge you to not use that as a crutch. I, like many others here, allowed MANY milestones to slide by while I continued to stuff my face with tobacco. Don’t do that.

    1. Today is day 14 for me. After 30 years…yes 30, I quit.
      The ONE great thing that helps me are loose tea leaves. YES….
      I get Tiesta Tea Fruity Pebbles green tea leaves, put them in a clean , empty chew can, soaked them with my favorite beverage (in my case Red Bull Total Zero) and I chewed on them throughout the day.

      Like I said, this worked great for me I quit cold after 30 years (started in 8th grade).

  39. I smoked for 10 years chewed for the past three, while smoking. I am 30 days with out smoking and six with out chewing. In the rear of my mouth were the “hard plate”, and “soft plate meet, it sometimes feels numb, at first it burned, other times it feels like i have a lot of nasal drainage, but just a little bit of white flem comes out when i try to cough. any one else have that issue

  40. I’m on day 50 and for about the last week I’ve had a pain that felt like it was in the muscles in my ear. The pain varies, but I can bite down as hard as I want but if I bite down and move my jaw to the left while applying pressure that’s the only time it hurts. Does anyone know anything about this?

    1. I didn’t experience this one in particular, but I had quite a bit of ear / jaw pain during my quit. I read somewhere (I’ll see if I can find the reference) that much of this jaw pain has to do with night time teeth grinding / clenching after we quit.

      1. I’ve been having the same popping noise. I notice I grind my teeth like crazy at night. 2 months and 20 days quit.

I’ve been dipping since I was 17 years old, Copenhagen, now I’m 54, I’ve tried to quit in the past, I really hate that I’m addicted to this stuff, a big waste of money and not good for your overall health. I’ve decided to quit, want to really bad. I’m cutting down on the number of dip a day and hope to get to zero real soon. I’m wanting to try the fake tobacco dip to see if it can help me through the physical addiction side of it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

      1. Mike , I’ve been dipping 42 years, I quit Father’s Day used patch on Monday, tue, and Thursday. Don’t tell anyone you are quitting let it be a game to see who noticed first. Cutting down is not going to help. If you really want to quit tell yourself I’m a man who will not be controlled by this crap and throw it in trash , are you tired of looking for spit cup,just got dip and wife wants a kiss, finish your dip before wife wants to get frisky.Fall asleep with dip,nasty breath, I’m not gna lie it’s hard to quit but I’m 10 days quit and don’t want it anymore , the cravings are only lasting bout 1 minute now instead of 5 .Only 1 headache so far . Going to save the $6.25 a day and buy Harley!!!

      2. I am also 54. Started dipping when I was 14….I have been dip free for 3 months. I suggest you drop everything. Don’t use the fake stuff or nicotine gum. Just STOP and “take the pain”. The side effects are HORRIFIC but if I can stop after 40 years you can do it also…Good luck!!

      3. I’m 51,started cope as a kid around 7, today I’m 6 days into quiting. All the neck pain,jaw pain,anxiety, is pretty bad. It all started 3 months ago when I switched to skoal because of my lip was getting raw. Anyway that’s when r h e pains started. So I switched back to Copenhagen and felt better. Then I just decided I wanted to stop, so it’s just a matter of when you are really ready to quit. Hope you do it and I hope I continue to quit

    3. Hi I was on 5th day and there was same problem like you, muscles pain in my ear and it hurts while moving my jaw to the left, but it was automatically gone after 3 days without any medicine.

  41. Only 1 week into quitting and fighting the constant dull headaches and dip fog. I have noticed the past few days I wake up pretty dehydrated and my diet/water intake hasn’t changed.

    1. Day 6. Had a few nicotine “mints” now and then to help a bit. Feel ok but this is my second time to quit. Dipped for 20 years, quit for 2 years then dipped again for a year for some reason. This time commuted to quit for good

      1. These nicotine mints you’re referring to… they contain nicotine? Sad to say but every time you take one of those, while they do “take the edge off”, they also reintroduce nicotine into your system. You’re prolonging your agony.

        1. I know. I am a public school teacher so trying to hang on for a few weeks. I will have the summer to deal with the bad nicotine withdrawals. I am a 2mg nicotine in the morning last few days. Then hold out rest of day

    2. Hi fellow quitters, I am in day 3 of attempting to quit and have had 3 Grizzly pouches in the last 72 hours (finished last tin) The first 36 hours I felt like I had a bad hangover. I have been dipping most of my adult life started in the military. The last 5 years I have been using Grizzly pouches which helped a lot with dip lip. Anyway I have been reading all the post and it sounds like I am having withdrawal systems similar to most of you. To old to continue this nasty habit so day 1 starts tomorrow with zero dip forward.     1. Yeah, I get that too. Might be acid reflux since the lack of nicotine can throw off your stomach or cause stress

  43. Used this crap for over 10 years. On day 16 of my quit. Went to the dentist yesterday and no cancer or cavities found thank gd.

  44. Dipper for 8 years. After many “attempts” at quitting I’m finally fully committed. 6 days free now and counting. It’s a hard road to come for sure but my family and my health mean more to me than that shit.

    2. Great Job! Day 5 here! I actually have a cough? Has anyone heard of this happening? No pain, just an annoyance cough.

      1. Alex F. – Dude, you absolutely get an annoying cough. It happens for a few reasons: your body is healing itself (creates inflammation in the back of the throat); there is an abnormal build up of mucus in the deep part of the throat; there is a lack of consistent swallowing on dip and/or gutting it – your throat becomes very dry.

        Recommendations: 1+ gallon of water, chill on any drinks outside of it.

  45. Day 82 for me. It been a long road. I thought I would feel better then I do. The anxiety seems like its getting worse. It has given me insomnia over the last month. Anyone else experience symptoms this strong this far into your quit? Some days I feel like its all to much. I keep telling myself one day at a time and that it will pass but there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel.

    1. I had it pretty bad around day 60. I decided to give it 2 weeks to go to the Dr. and get some medication if it didn’t subside. After about 10 days it started t osubside for me.

    2. Yeah bud I have been dealing with large amounts of anxiety I’m 16 days in and just really have been struggling. The anxiety has gotten progressively worse and in constantly worrying and mind racing. Don’t really want to try medication but I have had anxiety in the past so maybe it’s flaring up over a imbalance idk. But hang in there bro we fight through this all together!

      1. Congrats on your quit dwils777! What I am starting to realize is that it come and goes. We just have to accept it as normal and that seems to help for me. I still have resisted getting any meds for anxiety, although I did go get some meds to help me sleep.

        1. Very reassuring to hear this Colin. I am day 109 and just when I thought I was in the clear, these last few days have been filled with anxiety. Causing me chest pain, shortness of breath, etc.

      2. The anxiety is really tough for me. Used to have a dip to calm myself down, but recently it would just add to it, with the fear of long term damage it was doing to me. I’m only on day 1, but after finding this site I’m feeling pretty confident I’ll at least get to day 2. Thanks to everyone who posts here. It’s been supset helpful.

    3. Colin, anxiety 82 days in not a withdrawal symptom. It is likely a separate psychological issue that you were dealing with by dipping, whether you realized it or not. Millions of people self-medicate with nicotine for various mental health issues including anxiety rather than seeking medical help or even realizing they have a problem.

      If you want to stay off of dip, you will need to find other healthier ways to deal with the anxiety. Talk to your doctor. There are medications for severe anxiety and other methods for dealing with it that don’t involve medication, but almost any of them are healthier than dipping or smoking.

      If you can’t bring yourself to go the doctor route, exercise is the next best route. Anything that gets your heart rate up for an extended period and gets the endorphins kicking in will help. Just walking for 30 minutes can be a huge help for many people. Make it a nightly habit and you will probably sleep better.

        Its my 76th day. I am going for exercising daily and do yoga also. Problem which exist are
        Feel something is moving inside my skin
        Dont get taste of anything while eating
        Feel drawsy and week all time
        Anxiety is always there.

    4. THAT’S something I’ve been wondering. Once I “gird up my loins” and quit, how long will it be before the withdrawl symptoms are completely gone. I was thinkin’ probably three weeks and it’d be as if I never dipped. You haven’t scared me off, still gonna git er done, That’s why I’m on this site, gathering information for what is to come. It helps knowing that I’m not the only guy in the world goin’ through this.
