What To Expect When You Quit Dipping
So you want to quit dipping and you would like to know what to expect when you do. We’re not going to pull any punches around here, it’s tough. That’s why we’re all here. This timeline has been put together over the years with the input of THOUSANDS of quitters. It has been shown to be remarkably accurate from the time you STOP USING NICOTINE.
Days 1 through 3 – Pure hell. You will walk in the fog. Nothing will seem real. Your brain is wondering where the hell its fix is and it is going to punish you until you come up with it. 72 hours, that’s all you need to get the nicotine out of your system. This is where you start to deal with the physical withdrawal associated with quitting dip. Drink lots of water. Read, post, read and post. Don’t take your anger out on your loved ones. We always tell everyone………Make this quit about YOU. If you quit for your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, kids, mommy or daddy, you will resent them during this period. Quit for yourself and come in here to rant. Yell at us. Bitch at us. We can take it. We’ve been there.
Days 4 through 20 – Here comes the mind games. The nicotine is out of your system now. You will still have some physical things to deal with.
- Cravings
- Irritability
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Inability to Concentrate
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Constipation, gas, stomach pain
- Dry mouth
- Sore tongue and/or gums
Yep, you have this to look forward to. Your brain is rewiring itself. It isn’t used to being in an oxygen rich environment. Your body is responding in kind. Everything is a mind game now. All the cravings you have are actually due to triggers. Triggers are events where you are in a situation you would normally dip in. Mowing the grass, playing poker online, playing golf, working on the car………you get the picture. Keep drinking water, use seeds, the fake stuff, whatever you need to keep the dip out of your mouth. Remember, oral fixation is part of our habit, something you will eventually need to break. For now though, use all the tools you have.
Days 20 – 50 – You’re winning. Life isn’t great, but you probably had a couple of nights where you actually got some sleep. You might notice you’re going to bed earlier than you normally do. Not staying up to get in that last dip. You may notice some sores in your mouth. You’re thinking, “great, I quit dipping and now I have cancer.” You almost certainly don’t. Your mouth is healing itself. Tiny ulcers you’ve had for a long time are healing. We recommend you visit your dentist around the 30 day mark. Don’t be a pansy, just do it. He or she will be very supportive and they can explain the sores much better than we can. Don’t let your guard down. Don’t go out drinking with the fellas or the girls. We also recommend that you don’t drink for at least the first 50 days. Drinking is a huge trigger event and it weakens your resolve.
Days 50 – 70 – Cruise control. Life is really good. You still think about it, but this is good stuff here. Some people may suffer anxiety attacks during or a little before this stage. Some doctors say we dipped to relieve anxiety anyway. Some people can push right through this, others need a little help. Talk to your doctor before you quit or immediately after you quit. They will know what to do. Some give Wellbutrin or Lexapro. Lots of people in the support community take or have taken these medicines and can help you with the affects. Don’t wait till you get to this stage of the game to talk to a doctor. You’ll cruise through this stage much easier if you know how to take care of the anxiety or at least know it’s coming.
Days 70 – 90 – Late term craves, the doldrums, the blahs, the blues. Some people end up feeling like they are right back at day 1. The fog, the haze, the craves. It can be a tough time. You need to let people in your group know this is happening. Time to circle the wagons to get through it. It usually only lasts a few days. Fight through this and make sure your order your HOF Knife or Coin. Here are a couple of articles about this time period which we refer to as “The Funk”
Days 90 – HOF – Houston, resume the countdown. Enjoy the hell out of these last 10 days. You will be celebrating with your group as you all enter the HOF. It is a great feeling and an accomplishment you should not take lightly. Do something special for yourself and your family. They put up with your sorry ass for the last 90 days and they deserve something too.
100+ Days – Stay vigilant. Use the tools you have, to continue beating back any cravings or urges. You will still experience dip dreams and longings, but you are fully qualified to beat them down. Continue to post roll with your group. Get into the newer groups and help somebody out. Pass it along. Live the dream.
Lurker here. Thank you guys for all the support. It’s great to know there’s other people here along side me and also for helping us understand what to expect. It’s not easy but on day 292 and strong.
Congrats Ryan – that’s a HUGE number!
91 Days and counting, never in a million years did I think I would make it here after several attempts but its the best feeling in the world now that ive almost made it to 100 days.
Congrats on 91 days of freedom Jim!
I haven’t had a chew in 31 hours. I have been fighting with everyone. I didn’t follow you’re advice very well I just need to go to bed
Congrats Jason – just keep pushing through!
Hello, new to the group. Was going to start today ( only because I have 2 pouches left in can) but talked myself out of it. Amongst quitting dip I have other issues that will no doubt compound the process. For instance I’m a little type “A” , so starting on a Monday would be better than 7:44 in the morning on Saturday. I know it’s crazy, just the way I’m wired I guess. I will give it another go on Monday.
Sure… starting Monday is clearly better – to an addict.
Today is the BEST day to quit. Think about it. It takes nicotine 72 hours to work its way out of your system. If you quit TODAY, by Monday you’ll be NICOTINE FREE!
If you’re going to ‘give it another go’ you’re going to fail. Change your vocabulary – you’re setting yourself up to fail. https://www.killthecan.org/change-your-vocabulary/
You CAN quit. You WILL quit. Quit or quit not. There is no try.
Okay got it! Getting the vibe this is not a Dear Abby group lol. I’ll post when I actually do something about it, on Monday.
For some of us picking a day and having ducks in a row works best. No doubt it’s an excuse. Glad to be in this group and I actually feel revved up for my start date, like I’m starting a new job or something.
I noticed a lot of info here that suggest changing things like friends that dip or certain triggers like alcohol or stress. My trigger is just plain ol being awake. I chose dipping after 5 years of smoking so I didn’t have to wait for breaktime to smoke, instead I’ve got one going all day long because I can hide it nd do it anywhere. Thoughts?
My best friend dips . It’s not a trigger . I choose to not chew . I don’t see booby traps that will impede , or make me falter .
I gain strength from this site and those before me who have quit .
I am the asshole in charge of my own destiny .
Good luck. You have taken one step ,
It is desire . Drive on .
Chewie is tough on all of us because he knows what he is talking about. You gotta want it bad enough or you will just go back to chewing after some excuse in your life.
I failed a couple of serious times, because I wasn’t totally ready. I thought, “we’ll I’ll just quit until I feel like it”, or another time, I put a serious effort, but in the back of my mind, the thought of dipping again after a certain time was still lurking.
The last time, I quit cold turkey and realized I needed help, so I came here and a couple of guys (JayP, JeffJ, Shiva and others) helped me get through the tough times.
When Chewie tells you to change your vocabulary, he is also referring to your mind. No one can help you until you’ve made that decision to quit. I hope that helps dude. Let us know how your quit is going.
Sincerely
DDD
Day 693
Oct-22-2018
Don’t get me wrong Mark – setting a day is absolutely a LEGIT way to get started. Believe me… I’m SUPER pumped to see you start on Monday.
I’ve seen a SLEW of people that set that date and just sort of let is slide. That was ME… for YEARs. https://www.killthecan.org/53-days-ill-never-get-back/
If setting the date is what will get you to finally put down that can then ABSOLUTELY do that. I’ll be here Monday cheering you on as your biggest supporter. Don’t let it slip.
As for the ‘being awake’ trigger… that was me too. All day, every day. My name was ‘Chewie’ long before I became a quitter. I have friends who I spent four years in college who don’t know my real name. I’ve gotten wedding invites addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Chewie <-- no shit. For me, fake dip was a HUGE help. It allowed me to continue to ACT of dipping long after I'd quit USING dip. I've often said that I'd rather chew a can per day of the fake stuff for the rest of my days than EVER have another dip of Kodiak. I chewed a can/day of the fake for a good 220 days or so and then one day I just sort of stopped. Reviews, coupons, etc. here: https://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/smokeless-alternatives/ If there’s a specific brand / flavor you’re to looking emulate let me know… happy to try and point you in the right direction.
PUMPED to hear from you tomorrow!
Pvt Dipless reporting for duty sir!
Awesome Mark.. Take One day at a time. Breathe in the air of freedom. Come here, post often, rant, bitch , take it out on us :). Before you realize you’ll be over 100 days 🙂
Shiva
Day 565
I failed guys! Am I supposed to come here and admit it? Jesus, only went without for 13 hours. Why are things like my family, young sons, wife or the possibility of living healthy not important to me???? F*** F***F***. I actually felt like I was having a buzz this morning prior to my failure. I think someone mentioned that in an earlier post. Now what???? Now I’m more mad that I quit quiting!!!!!! Arrrrrgggg (In rage mode)
*sigh*
Here’s to, ‘giving it another go’.
And so your battle begins Mark, these 3 days ahead, The NIC bitch is gonna throw everything at you, fight back with all you got, and I mean get all your strength up and fight it, your life and health depends on it. We are here if you need us.
Oorah!

Day 694
Oct-22-2018
I appreciate the support and welcoming atmosphere. Always failed going it alone. I like the comradery here and will definitely check in often! Thank you all and great job to those of you that stay clean!
Welcome aboard the quit train Mark, it will take you to freedom but is not an easy journey. Luckily, like myself and several others before and after, you have this website to help you navigate.
As Shiva and DDD have stated, post here as much as you can, we cannot help if you’re not posting your wins and losses.
Stay Strong…remember when you have a though moment, it’s only temporary and “This Too…Shall Pass”

I think being incarcerated will be the only way for me! Feeling helpless.
P.s. Never been incarcerated
Can’t tell you how excited I am to see you this AM Mark! You’ve taken the first step – and you’re NOT alone. Let me know how we can help. You got this!
Not sure what to tell you there Mark, I am disappointed, but not surprised, when I failed, it took me 4 years to come back in here with my tail between my legs. All i can say is go and continue dipping until you’re ready to quit, take 4,5,10 years if you want, or you can get back on that horse right now and start again. You saw how hard it is, it doesn’t get any easier. It’s your call partner…….
DDD
Yes, I agree 100% with DDD, take 1,5,10 years to decide when it’s time to be free. Only you will know when it’s time. You will never quit for the wife, kids, parents…you can only do this FOR YOU. I’ve said it before, it’s the most selfish thing you can do, is quit. It will ONLY be for yourself and no one else. I dipped for nearly 30 years. I didn’t quit for anyone other than myself….and believe me, I had several “other” reasons to quit and didn’t. 13 hours is a good start, but I honestly don’t think you’re ready…maybe you can prove us all wrong?
Good Luck

So Mark… are you going to ‘give it another try’ or are you done with this quitting thing?
When you’re ready… we’ll be here. It will be an honor to quit with you.
I greatly appreciate the support, truly seems genuine. I am not giving up.
Make no mistake sir… it’s genuine. I know how hard it is to quit. I struggled for YEARS to finally make my decision.
Dear Brothers & Sisters – Hope you guys are going great in the journey. Frank – roll call? Trust me, once you cross this period the journey becomes much easier.
Came across a wonderful 5 yr HOF speech by a fellow quitter. Chk this out: https://www.killthecan.org/five-year-quit-hof-put-the-work-in/
Jeff/JAyP/DDD – Hope you guys are doing great. CAL/Carey – Haven’t heard from you guys for a while? Hope all is well. Come here and post once in a whie.
I QUIT WITH YOU ALL

Day – 559
Hanging in there Shiva, I read that HOF speech, what a story, especially regarding his mother!
Hope you and everyone else is doing well and keeping quit,!

Hey Shiva, Been doing great thanks for asking. I drop by once in a while and brows the forums. I’m at 526 days now and don’t think about the quit anymore. I have a can of the fake stuff around and still enjoy one sometimes, but don’t really chew that stuff much anymore. Glad to see you are still quit too! take care.
I have a question I dipped a can a day for ten years then I was 6years clean i started having regular life problems and picked up a can about two months ago. The fist dip was great but now I don’t like it anymore. Heartburn gas bloating Diarrhea I feel like it adds to my stress. I remember quitting the first time. It was awful depression restless leg syndrome stomach problems the list goes on. I thought I was going to die. Since it’s only been two months will I have the same withdrawals will they last as long? I sure hope not !!
Tough to say. The Law of Addiction https://www.killthecan.org/additional-resources/the-law-of-addiction/ states that reintroduction of the drug (nicotine) will reestablish dependence on it. That leads me to believe that you’ll experience at least SOME of those symptoms… but hopefully not as bad.
Did you join our forums the first time through? I’d suggest you do this time – the BEST place to get support / accountability – https://ktcforum.org/
31 days in. I think COVID is making this quit harder. there is nothing I would rather do then go buy a log and fire through it one lip after another. Luckily I supposed flavored tobacco was outlawed in my state (MA) so quiting seemed like the more appropriate option then getting adjusted to a new flavor. Its struggle city today but this too shall pass.
“This Too… Shall Pass” is correct Frank, and was my battle cry over 6 years ago. And guess what? it does. No sense turning back now…you’re 31 days in…almost a third the way to the first floor. Stay vigilant!

Covid no Covid your doing great… Your past some the of hardest days, just give your self a big victory on your progress so far… over 30 days! you have accomplished allot.. You still have triggers and still have days of struggle, but as my friend JAYP states no reason to turn back now…Its good you come here and talk it out Frank…Keep going

From my personal experience, this 30-50,60 days is the toughest period. Your brain is seriously rewiring itself to live a life without nic bitch. It will make you feel the agony and all sorts of dirty dancing to trip you. Good news!! once you are through this period, you’ll be equipped to handle this well and from then on you can see your recovery unfolding slowly but surely.
This too shall Pass. This is the battle cry I loaned from JayP and I still remind myself on dog days.
Shiva
Day 546
[1 year anniversary] Emotional freedom tapping (EFT) helped me the most! Natalie Glanell was my coach. Hang tough.. it got was easier after 100 days. I would have tough days here and there, then tough hour here and there and then ever now and then have a craving. I still get an occasional craving but it last about 3-5 seconds. I then remind myself of the worry, heartburn, smelly spit cup, gross teeth, wasted $300 a month ETC.. I seriously don’t miss it all the majority of time. Most weeks I don’t even thing of it. It takes a full year to get to that but i marked it in increments of 30 days. by the third month it was very doable. keep in mind, I dipped ONE AND HALF cans of Copenhagen a day for 30 YEARS!!
Day 668
Wow, Thanks guys, I am glad that the words printed in here from me or any of you guys are being read and have been able to help others. Remember we were there and we followed others, it’s our turn to help.
I know I still have 2 months to go to complete my two years quit, but I went ahead and ordered my 2 year coin from this site, I figured it would be a present to myself and to remind me of the days I’ve been free of Nicotine.
I saw other brothers taking a picture of their coins while on some adventure or get together, I want to do the same and share it with you all.
Take care everyone and Stay quit, OORAHH!!!

Day 667
The thread got kind of long so I decided to put this note at the top. CONGRATULATIONS!! JeffJ, you made it to your sixth year of your quit. That is AWESOME!!.
Besides Chewie I know there are other older brothers, but rarely hear from them so to me you and Jayp are spearheading this combat mission and leading the platoon.
I know that readers probably get bored of us repeating the story about when we started, but it is supposed to help the new guys that are starting out, most of us read the newest posts and do not go deeper to read older text. So yes, it feels good to look back and see where you came from. Your nicotine nemesis lays on the floor destroyed by your mighty sword after several days of battle when you finally mortally wounded it. Afterwards you decided to walk away and put distance between you and it, each day the memory of that 100 day battle seeps away, but you have to remind yourself, that those Nicotine adversaries can mount a sneak attack and snare you with their deadly grip at anytime.
It is weird folks yesterday i crossed the dreaded day number of my quit and just couldn’t bring myself to write in here during that day so I decided to wait and congratulate you guys the day after.
Especially Jeffj, dude, most of us dealt with the daily nuisance of the symptoms, but you actually got sick from it and recovered, that my friend is a heroic episode of resilience. Well done sir, Well done!
To the rest of the warriors, OORAH! keep fighting!

DDD
Thanks man, you are doing awesome also. It’s strange how 6 years ago we all started our journey and here we still talking about our quits.
Again. Thanks for mentioning my sickness. Or the word is cancer. I talk to many people who had my cancer on a few sites for cancer. It’s goes to show you, you can quit chewing, and if your unlucky as I was, fight cancer two years after I quit. I talk about it often how lucky I was I quit…. things could have been worse for me.
When I see people here saying they can’t do it ( quit) I say, at least try. I hope no one ever has to sit with a doctors and they tell you.. you have cancer, or endure 6 hours of chemo… if any one needs a reason to quit, I am happy to tell you of 3 surgeries, 7 weeks everyday of radiation and every two weeks 6 hours of chemo… feeding tubes and cannot work for almost a year
I hope my story helps you quit chewing.. we are all human… chewing tobacco is full of carcinogenic products .. I have a friends who chewed and ended up with pancreatic cancer, the doctors said tobacco played a role in his cancer also(. I had throat cancer)
I came back after 4 years after my quit, and here you are along with Shiva and Jayp. We all got it done!
I am thankful being able to meet you guys.. and DDD.. everyone should read you hall of fame. I have read it many times…and it motivates me still this day
My car ( 1975 Laguna s-3, 400 small block ) if finally almost to paint. How is your project? jayp what classic do u have?
Shiva, I don’t know if you ha e a car culture like
Ours.
Jeffj
8-14-14
It’s there Jeff but not in the same league as US. Most mid-income people started having cars only in 2000s and before that car was a luxury. So, yes classic cars are there but few.
DDD – Awesome note and BTW I am ok even if it is repetitive. I see so many newbies and folks who are on the edge to take a leap. Even if it helps one person I’ll be very glad.
Day 539
Shiva
Hey Jeff, I just read this post and honestly, if this doesn’t motivate you to want to quit then you just aren’t ready. One of my biggest worries when I used is that I’d get sick from using. After quitting (and reading your fight) I’m thankful (and was dam lucky) I didn’t get it. Thank you for sharing your fight (both) with the board. DDD is right, what you went through is Heroic and Resilient. Getting through a quit and cancer is something many of us won’t face, I do appreciate you sharing this with us all.
My “classic” is a 1987 , Ttop Mustang GT. Still has its original paint…and tho it’s had some modifications on its original 302 engine, it’s still very close to being stock. I gutted and redone the entire interior last winter…that was a project!
DDD, I appreciate all of your motivational posts on this board, Your words still solidify my quit today, I say you’ve taken the sword of motivation on this board. I appreciate seeing you reaching out to others, on your way to 2 years free.
Shiva, I know you say you are well, I hope you and the family remain safe. Last I heard the pandemic was ramping up a bit in your country..be safe! I see you, like DDD are still helping others here, that is the way it should be, paying it forward!
I guess it’s time for me to go on my morning run folks, this was something I incorporated in my quit, 6 years ago and have made it part of my life again. I was an athlete in HS, kind of lost my way for a while after college, but found my way back to being active again after quitting that nasty ass habit.
Take care and stay quit!

JayP- thanks. We are doing fine although the cases are still climbing pretty fast here. We average about 66k+ new cases a day officially but I think the actual might be 2-3 times more :(. The stringent lockdown helped to slow down the pandemic but in a country with so much population I think you can only do so much.
You hit the nail. If Jeff’s post doesn’t inspire to quit then God only help. Jeff- You are a hero, the things that you’ve gone through and stand firm. You are awesome.

Day 100 !!

Congratulation Steve, Write your HOF speech, let us know your story.
Great start Steve. Hundred days is no small achievement. Looking forward to see even more. Congrats 🙂

537 days
So I am about 5 days into a quit. I didn’t choose this the state I live in banned the sale of any flavored tobacco. I stocked piled for the moment but just finally ran out. I have been dipping for about 13 years and quit maybe 2 or 3 times for nothing much longer then 60 days. This time around feels a little different at least in the beginning and maybe its due to the fact that I don’t have access. But my sense of taste and smell seem to be way stronger and I’m not sure if that’s possible anyone else experience that before about 5 days in everything tastes and smells different?
Absolutely – taste / smell being different is VERY common. Just think about what you’ve been doing to your taste buds for the past 13 years! Congrats on a great start!
Wow. Been a little bit since I’ve been on here. Just calculated my quit and it’s been 161 days! Didn’t think it had been that long. Hope everyone is doing well and if anyone of you are thinking about quitting, today is a great day to start!
Day 250 . Succeeding and grateful for your support
Bravo! Congrats on 250 days of freedom!
Neil?
I know I may get creitisam, but I have been dipping for 20+ years. I have had countless times I wanted to quit. I keep telling myself, “now isnt a good time with stress”, etc. I’ve been dipping so long it seems I cant even remember what it’s like to not have the can on me. The first thing I do when I leave the house is make sure I have my can first, and then phone, etc. I wouldnt even know know where to begin to remotely try to put the can down. I get anxious just thinking about trying to put the can down. Hell I have a dip in as I am typing out this comment. I have alot of respect for all of you who are currently quitting, and successfully put the can down for good. I just dont know with me having PTSD, and chronic insomnia, if I can put the can down.
30+ year dipper. Started at age of 19. I’ve been quit for 81 days now. Everything you just described is where I was at 81 days ago. I started and ended my day with a dip. Every thing in between was waiting until the next one. One of the hardest parts about quitting? Taking the first step. You focus on each day and that days step. This site is awesome. I found that it gave me more desire to quit when I knew others were going through it with me. You will make connections and receive support when you are having a rough day. But if someone like me can start this journey you can too. You came to this site because you want to quit. Take that first step.
Tate,
I am 57 days into this crap and I tell you that if I can get 57 days into this you can too! I dipped for 20+ years-from age 19-42. I got my inspriation from reading RIch dad poor dad. The first step is you have to tell yourself you want it gone! you don’t want to do it anymore! I have four kids and a wife and told myself I wanted to make memories, not become one. I had quit for 16/20/30 days before. This time I wanted it and besides these guys will blow up your phone if you don’t post roll!. you are 72 hours away from freedom. after that it is just not buying it. I am 5 years sober, 57 days nicotene free. It is a great feeling not waking up and trying to find a way to get that 1st chew. Nothing owns me
You can do it! I dipped for 10 years (usually a can a day.) The first 3 days suck. After that it’s just not being anywhere to buy it until you can resist it.
I have been chewing for at least 25 years and averaged a can a day. I quit cold turkey on the 22nd of this month so I have 3 days in.
The point of my reply is that I have had chronic insomnia for a while now. I’m now thinking my insomnia was from the dip. (but our bodies are complex and react different) Even though it’s been a few days, I’m starting to feel tired like normal at bedtime. So that’s one of the pros of quitting….the cons are many as expected and come with no surprise…..I’ve been feeling agitated and walking in a fog. I’m ready to take it one day at time. Each day that passes the better chance I have at succeeding.
Tate
Applaud you for you post. I thought the same, I would chew when I wake in the shower, would go into full anxiety if I didn’t know where my can of cope was. I offer this. Give it a shot.. try a few days. It’s not easy, but well worth it.
I took my quit as an adventure.. embrace the suck Just think. All the hard part would be over by Halloween you could be clean
Anyways. You have got to want it. You have a great group of people here that would cheer you on
Good luck

Today marks 6 years free from smokeless tobacco. Time has flown by, I still can’t believe I’ve been free from this terrible addiction for 6 years. I accidentally stumbled upon this site and I never looked back. I want to give a big thank you to Chewie for supporting my rants in the early days and to the others who joined me (Jeff, DDD and Shiva) as well as all the others who came through and went through the battle. Even you new quitters posting your battles today, help solidify my position on quitting. You guys remind me of where I was 6 years ago and it’s something I never want to go through again.
I was almost a 30 year Dipper, can, can and a half a day addiction. Dipping was my life. I’m going to say it again, if you’re reading this, and are not sure you can quit, you can! It isn’t easy, I won’t lie, but each day you refrain from plugging, is another day you approach freedom from it. If my ass can Kill the Can, you also can!
Thank you KTC Community, lots of love ✌️

Thanks JayP!! Your an inspiration!!
Thank you Steve, I’m here to help where I can. It’s a terrible habit!
Congratulations JayP, You and Jeff are the ones we look up to. Though some of us that started with you guys fell down, you all kept going and didn’t give up. I am 3 months away from completing 2 years of quit. I should have been right there with you guys, but I chose to be a fool and continue dipping. I learned my lesson though, the second time i started my quit was worse for me, why? because I knew what was coming every step of the way and though you know it’s coming you cannot fully prepare for it. Day after day, hit after hit, time slows down and all the time you’re thinking, the hell with this I am gonna go and get me some turd. The physical symptoms I overcame with ease the second time, but the brain games were tougher the second time around.
All of you guys reading our posts hopefully can get some guidance and give you an extra push to keep going. I know it did for me when I would read about guys that were ahead of me in the quit.
I know I did my share of ranting in this site, some people read them some didn’t, but it was the one tool that help me continue with my quit. Every once in a long while I think about dipping, but it is a very weak thought that goes away quickly. I used to ask the Elder brothers in here, as I call them, How does it feel to be years apart from the tobacco, do you all have craves? Well, I am right there now with almost 2 years under my belt, but I still ask to those that have more years away, How does it feel to be that far away from the tobacco? Do you all miss it sometimes?

Thanks DDD, I want to say that you coming back and getting through it this time, should also be an inspiration to anyone who has fallen, but didn’t know if they could get back on track. You did it!! And almost 2 years clean now? It seems like yesterday you were counting your first 100…it goes by so fast. Yet, when you’re the one doing the shoveling, it seems slow. I applaud you for your courage.
As far as cravings, if I want one, 6 years later, it’s a fake one. I will say I do occasionally take one these days. But my “bro-mance” with nicotine dip, is long, gone. I don’t even think about it like I did…more like a obsession, not a thought.
I do believe some “feelings” I may have, like irritability, light headedness or even concentration issues, that I occasionally deal with even today, were probably always there, but not noticable, because nicotine masked them. Or, perhaps I’m just getting older ?
Anyway, no, I don’t think about ever getting a can of Skoal, Wintergreen Long Cut anymore. I don’t even look at those cans behind the counter any longer either. Plenty of people dip around me these days too and it doesn’t affect me, at all.
I’m done, like you, I quit once, for 6 months, then foolishly started again. This time, I’m done.
Take care DDD, good hearing from you, get to 2 years, then move right along to 3

Jayp
Congrats on 6 years. I am not far behind you!
I am happy DDD and shiva finished the journey. It’s a great feeling putting the nic bitch behind us all.
I feel as though I never had a dip( besides a few scars on my neck from my cancer). I don’t crave anything. I don’t dream about it.. I don’t use fake stuff. I just feel like I have been blessed to stop Copenhagen .. my buddy still chews. I told him. I am in almost 6 years. His excuse is. He will go crazy. I said. It’s better then chewing… he will never quit. You need to want to quit to fight the battles
Aug 14. 6 years. Man. It’s good
Take care guys.
Jeffj
Thanks Jeff, yes sir, we were right by each other with the quit. I know you were close to hitting 6 yourself.
Couldn’t agree more, you have to want to quit. I didn’t quit for anyone/thing but for my own self.
I don’t tell people they need to quit, I hated hearing that stuff from people when I was an addict. I honestly just didn’t want to quit. But the time came where I was just done with this shit.
Once I came to that point, it was time.
Shiva, I hope you are well, still haven’t heard from you in a bit.
You all take care and stay safe….and STAY QUIT!

Jeff- Really nice to see your post after a long time. I am doing good in terms of being quit. Overall, I hate this lockdown though :(. Hope you guys are all doing good. Stay Safe.
Shiva
Jay P – Had I stayed quit in my previous attempt, I would have completed 6 years on June 1st.. Better late than never.. slowly inching towards that 2 yr mark with DDD :).
Shiva
6 years today. Never forget it. I woke up that early August 14 2014 and told
My wife. I am done with Copenhagen. Threw the can out. I didn’t find kill the can till I was day 10 or 11. This place helped so much. DDD was a huge motivation for me. And I was always behind jayp and shiva.
I am so happy we all got it done. New guys. Don’t give up. Now I don’t even think about Copenhagen. The battle was well worth it to me.. 6 years clean. Hard to believe it. I guess a pat on the back is ok…
Shiva. mail call. What’s going on. In two weeks boys my car finally gets paint. When done I will email u. Jayp. Woodward cruise is soon?
Congratulations Jeff, I had you on my office calendar and I wasn’t there today to remind me. You mentioned the day back when I hit my 6 year mark. Crazy how fast it has went…but it does seem like yesterday when I myself stumbled on this site. I agree, DDD had a knack for writing some pretty motivating posts. He helped push me along as well as you did. You couldn’t possibly put a price tag on those first 100 day gripes I shared here with you and this board…they are so priceless, I printed them and still have them.
But this isn’t about me, this is about your milestone Jeff, congratulations again…you are an inspiration to me and several others. Sure, I was ahead of you, but you kept me there, for that, I say again, THANK YOU!
A few others deserve thanks, Shiva was definitely a big part too, Steve and Rick as well, but they disappeared.
As far as Woodward, all the cool cruises have been shut down from my understanding. We have a woman drunk with government power running out state currently…you understand this living in Cali. Let’s not get it twisted for the feminist that see this, I don’t mind a woman leader, but this one can suck a pair of lemons!
I hope someday we can meet up for a round of golf and drinks.
Congrats again on 6 years free Jeff, stay safe and let’s head to 7!

Congrats Jeff on 6 years :). I am very happy on your milestone and you along with JayP, DDD and all others have been a great inspiration to me. I would really doubt if I’ve reached this far, had you guys were not there. I still remember the first 100 days when each day was miserable and how you along with DDD and JAyP were always there to reply to my mumbling and groans. I felt so ashamed after my first failed attempt. In fact, I was lurking around after my first failed attempt and once I decided to quit once and for all, the posts from DDD and that he is on the way to glory was what inspired me to come out in the open and be brave about it.
I always love your confidence and the way you conquered this. A big kudos to you 🙂
Nowadays, it is very very rare for me to even get a thought about this. I don’t even get dip dreams or smoke dreams anymore.
Can’t wait to see your car once it is all painted :).. Great going Jeff. I am so thankful to almighty for getting such great friends.
Day 537 and chugging on
Shiva
Many congrats JayP. I’ll always look up to You, Jeff and DDD. It is not just your quit but the way to guide and help others. You guys will always be my inspiration.
Wow.. 6 years.. :)… great going..
BTW, I am doing good with the quit. Of late, feeling very lethargic and dull. It’s to do with these lockdown and morbidity around us :(. This too shall pass.
Shiva
This too, Shall pass…is correct Shiva, hang in there. I have a feeling, lockdown is coming again for us all in Michigan, but its not about the Covid cases increasing, it’s about politics. It’s my opinion, this Governor wants us voting from a mailbox and not a poll. In other words, protesting (rioting) isn’t a concern, but voting polls are. ?
I digress.
Good to see you’re well, stay safe. I think things will be better in the coming months.

Be here in California jayp… open for almost a month then shut us down again. I think you have a valid point of the set up for this years elections. There is allot behind the scenes to make us do the biting by mail. The chaos. Riots. I feel is a plan.
Glad I quit chewing. I would have burned through 2 cans of cope a day with all this crap.
Although. I feel I have become more mello since like year 3 of my quit.
So. We are shut down again. I do now is work the classic car. It’s off to paint in September.
Be safe boys. If your new here. Get it done. Stick to your quit.
Congrats to shiva and DDD. U guys rock

Hey JeffJ glad to hear from you, it’s been a while. What color is the car going to be? As for me, I finally dropped a New engine in my truck and kept it pretty much stock, going to add a 2 inch lift kit later and start working on high performance mods as well. Here in Texas, we were opened then closed and now want to go to lock down again. Frustrating, but what can we do? But you are right, i remember coping with all anxiety, frustration and stress by popping a wad of snuff. These times would have been perfect to go through 2 cans per day.
I am glad I am off it for good.
You all take care.
Day 646

DDD
Back to original gm color 74. I will send pics to your email when it’s done
What size motor did I drop? My laguna is 400 sbc
All is good is southern Cali. Just having a hot spell.. but it’s almost August. I hope football season isn’t cancelled. I really need some football!!
I read a post about a new guy not getting sleep the first few weeks into his quit. That was normal for me. I was exhausted. But couldn’t sleep. Eventually it passes
Shiva. How is India my man? Be safe
Jayp. How is everything.
I have email from you guys. Hit you pics of the laguna after paint. Give me a month. Need to continue saving up

Here’s a post with a good discussion of sleep issues…
https://www.killthecan.org/sleep-issues-when-quitting-dip/
All is well Jeff, hot here in Michigan too…you’ll never hear me complain about that. I hate the Midwest Winter’s!
Headed on vacation next week, over to the west side of the state. Went to northern Michigan last early July, so I’m headed to the west early August.
Look forward to the pictures of your project.
I’ve been driving my car as well when weather permits?
On the subject, sleep wasn’t an issue for me during my quit…I actually think I was more exhausted without it.
Take care and keep quit all✌️

Today marks my 500th day of freedom. Woohoo.. Thanks to everyone and this site for helping me.
Shiva
Congratulations in hitting that 5th floor shiva, it feels good to finally live the life without the dreaded nicotine doesn’t it?. Keep up the good work and go for that 600 mark. I am on day 630 and quit with you all today.
Shiva, congratulations as that one one great milestone. You sir are an inspiration to so many newbies myself included. I thank you for going ahead of us and leading us thru the nightmare of quitting. KTC is the best thing that was ever found by me on google. I promote the site every chance I get. Thank you again and I am PTQWYT!!

Congratulations Shiva !! Proud of you !!
Thanks everyone
Thanks. Everyone. I am have having fewer but harder times right now. Went into a fog today so got on here to read. Don’t break you $@&$& is what I keep telling myself. You guys are helping me. Thanks.
KB, Cmms, Steve – Anxiety is for real and it hurts some quitters more than others. Anxiety and Depression wreaked havoc for me. But the good news… It will get better, much better. Trust me.
When exactly? Each individual is unique and so is their symptoms. It was one hell of a struggle for me in the first 3 months. Things started getting better after 100 days and much better after 200 days. One thing I can promise. It will definitely get better.
Keep fighting the good fight. When in doubt, stop for a moment and look at the path you have crossed and soak in what you have achieved. You always have friends and achievers here.
Shiva
496 Days.
Day 71 for me. Rough day. Mental fog and anxiety strong today. Sore throat today. Hanging in there though. I will over come this !!!
Good positive attitude, Hang in there!
Nice job man. I used tobacco for 20 years, starting when I was 14. Today is day 90 for me. Fog is sporadic and even when it does set in, its much clearer than before. I’m battling anxiety and dizzy spells. I went to Walmart and got some stuff for stress. My wife told me to get something with Ashwagandha in it. I got some gummies and they work very well. Other than that I do CrossFit every morning, and try to keep to a routine to keep my mind occupied. Weekends suck though as I have a hard time getting up to do anything productive and all I want to do is sleep. Oh well I guess. Just have to keep on going and wait for this shit to end. Good luck!
Day 32 today. I have been close to slipping but stopped myself today. This has been hard on me
Hang in there KB – you NEVER have to go back… as long as you DON’T slip.
Hey KB, do it one day at a time. Believe me, we know what you’re going through. This episode in your life will be one of the toughest ones and once you feel strong enough to look back at your mighty battle you will feel the great sense of accomplishment. Stay strong partner, let us know how you doing.
: Hi all I am about 90+ days of tobacco free after chewing for 15 years. Over the last 3 months I have made a trip to the ER also saw a family doctor and also been the urgent care with the same issue I am having a loud beating heart fluttering feels like I’m having a heart attack and it’s terrible. I’ve had three EKGs and they became perfectly fine my blood pressure is perfect and my blood work was perfect. I’m a healthy in shape human being and still have constant chest palpitations or feel like I do. can you guys please help me out I’m really struggling these last couple days and have not slept in the last 24 hours
My anxiety was so bad that my left arm was getting numb and it felt like I wasn’t able to breath. Doc put me on BusPar which it seems to help but I can’t sleep whatsover. I’ve read a bunch of info on this site of the last few days and it may be what I am experiencing
Dude, I went through the same thing. I never had anxiety attacks before and it steam rolled me when I first had them. I didn’t know what they were and didn’t know what to do. I ended up in the ER twice, but like you and others here, there was nothing wrong.
That was a scary part of my quit, fortunately one crazy doctor friend of mine told me, “oh that’s easy, get yourself a watch with hands for minutes and seconds (old fashioned) when the attack occurs, immediately start looking at your watch and start counting the seconds 1, 2, 3…….and so on; the attack will try to get you to stop focusing and concentrate on the symptoms like palpitations and sweats and fast breathing, but continue looking at the seconds and count. You will see that the attacks become shorter and fewer until they disappear.” It worked for me, it might work for you all.

Hang in there KB. I know the struggle.
Happy Father’s Day!
If you have a family with kids, you have a huge responsibility. Those little ones depend on you. Today is a good day to quit, if you’ve already started, congratulations, keep it up; if you’ve been thinking about it, today is the day, give yourself the best gift you can ever give. We are all in this together.
I am proud to say, I quit with all of you today, and today is day 609 for me.
You all take care.
Oct-22-2018
Thanks Franks5, Congrats on your 100 days, those are the hardest ones. Have you had time to write your HOF speech? We all did; Shiva, JeffJ and Jayp, look them up if you need inspiration. Though we never met before we joined this site, our stories are all similar. Different backgrounds, same addiction, one great battle and satisfying victory. Keep up the good work fellows, you doing good.
Day 602
Anytime I can help I will just as those who have gone before us have. All of us need someone to inspire us and to see someone hit the 6th floor is totally awesome. DDD you are an inspiration to us all. I have not written my speech yet. I will be honest I thought there was a link on the site for it but have not found it. I do 99% of reading and posting on my phone so I tend to get frustrated and quit looking. I will keep researching because yes I do want to post as I feel compelled to help those where I can. I am so grateful for this site as I did lurk 78 days before joining. My life became so much easier once I joined and was able to ask questions and get answers. Now I tell people all about the site whenever I can. 103 days and counting and i quit with you today. God bless everybody and stay strong.
DDD’s speech is here https://www.killthecan.org/100th-day-chronicle/
Yup sounds just like mine but different. Thanks chewie for pointing his out for me. I got thru some of the speeches when I had time to look them up. Yell at me if you want I can take it but where do I go to post mine. I actually on vacation this week so I would love to get it written. I just have not found where the button is that says “post your hof here”. Just like Doug the dog in the UP movie (funny but thats my name) I might not be pointing the right way. Show me my friend and I will deliver, thanks.
Ha I found where to post. Good grief I am on the accountability page every morning. You will get an hof speech this week. God bless and thanks again.
Chewie – there used to be a comments section in the home page. Though I never joined the forums, these comments sections were a big help and support for me. Would be really glad if you can restore that comments section.
Thanks
Shiva (Day 487)
Sorry about that Shiva – it was there and then I made a site update and forgot to put it back… comments have been restored to the home page. https://www.killthecan.org/
Also… if you’re looking for the OLD version of the home page (and associated comments) you can find them here: https://www.killthecan.org/home/
Thanks a lot, Chewie
Testing to see if you get an email notification now Shiva…. please let me know.
I got the email notification, thanks Chewie.
A big shout out and kudos on this milestone Frank. First 100 days are by far the most difficult and you have aced it. This experience will teach you to take forward these learnings and will also enable you to help other newbies.
Shiva(487)
This site has helped ease my anxiety more than anything. I chewed for about 2.5-3 years, at most I was at a can every 2 days, but probably averaged one every 4-5 days, so not the heaviest of users, but still proud to say today is day 20. Like most I’m ashamed I even started, plus the fact I hid it from basically everyone I knew. Luckily I don’t have the anxiety as many have posted about (the mj helps with that), sleep is definitely worse but what always scares me is the occasional sore. Same routine; I notice a sore, I freak out for a day or so, it’s gone within 2 days, and then I can relax again. It can be such a mindf*** but I try to keep telling myself it can only get better before it gets worse. I’m so committed to staying quit, and I come back to this site a couple times a week to keep me motivated. I had no idea this community existed but I’m so happy I found it. Happy quit everyone
Day 600
Well, I’ve reached the 6th floor. Thanks to all of you guys that are here supporting each other. JayP, JeffJ, Shiva my quit brothers from the very beginning, thanks for being there when things got rough. I hope you all are doing well. Things are opening up around here in south texas finally. Oh by the way guys, I am buying a new engine from JEGS to drop in my 96 GMC truck. I’d say 20 years out of that first engine was pretty good huh? Anyway, i know you guys are working on your cars so I thought I’d join the fun and get my old truck on the road again.
You all Take care.

600 Days
Oct-22-2018
Awesome and congratulations DDD. I hit my first 100 yesterday and couldn’t be happier. It sure has not been easy but it is so worth it. Keep posting as we need each other more then we think. Here is to many more floors for all and don’t worry the elevator can carry us all, God bless everybody and I quit with you today.
Hearty congrats DDD. It ain’t easy but it is well worth.
For some reason, I am not getting email notifications on posts and I missed out last 2-3 weeks of activities. .I am at 487 days very near to 5th floor 🙂 .
Shiva

Hey Shiva, great to hear from you, also congrats on the almost 500 mark. I still remember when you were going through those first 100 days, I felt your pain bud, I was a little ahead of you so I knew what you were going through. Anyway, don’t be a stranger, there a few newbies in here and they like it when we post. I know I did when I was going through the first 100. Hope Jeff and JayP pop in and post, ain’t hear from them in a while.
Absolutely. I cannot explain the joy of seeing you back after we both flunked the first time. I know we always wanted to get rid of this nasty addiction but I always looked for some support. When we started this path of de-addiction, there were so many things we didn’t know and there were so much darkness. I am glad that I found You, Jeff, JayP and all others who helped me out of this.
Even though we all were very much motivated to quit, we needed some support, help and guidance. More importantly some assurance that this process of coming out was only temporary and there will always be light at the end of tunnel.
I would very much hang in here and do my bit to help out the newbies.
Thanks again for being there for me and for everyone DDD.
Shiva
Day 599
Hello everyone. just a quick note to encourage all to keep fighting, do not give up! every day without the nicotine is a victory for the real you. Enough of the lie, the real you wishes to come out. Remember when you were little and did not dip? those were the days. Kick that NIC monster and keep fighting. Tomorrow I will be 600 days free of tobacco and I did it one day at a time, you can do it too.
DDD
Oct-22-2018
Ok they say embrace the suck and fight thru the funk. After 93 days of embracing and fighting when will this crap end?! There is no way I will be going back to continue a 30 year addiction but man this is kicking my ass. Wicked sore throat for days on end, no meds will touch the discomfort and doc finds no issues. The throat is a major discomfort but does not affect me eating or drinking. It does make my voice feel weird but my wife says it sounds the same. Have not really had much of an appetite since my quit but always pound the water. Now sinus issues flaring up with those oh so wonderful headaches with bouts of nausea. Complete total exhaustion from all the stress (and worry about my health now) which is screwing up my sleep. Never had health issues and now I have them, please tell me its my body cleaning itself. Family docs have no clue about chewing addiction as all the info they have is for smokers and I have been there 3 times in 93 days.. Like I said I am in this to get clean but when does this crap end? Not much out there to help us close to 100 or over but dig thru the comments on this site and you find some similarities. I hate asking for help as we all think we can get thru things with no help. This is really bringing me down but by going thru this site has been a real help. Thank you to Chewie for starting this site and to all who have posted as it is the biggest help so far. Keep up the good fight and God bless.
Yup, all completely normal Franks. It’s all the same story, different variations….it feels MADDENING to get free from this shit. Many other quitters who’ve been there Will agree….I was there, many here as well. If I can give you any advice… REMEMBER this feeling…and DON’T ever go back. The shit you go through now, will solidify your quit later, embrace the struggle! My favorite personal battle cry was “this too, shall pass” and guess what? It did! Stay the course, the shit storm will pass!
I quit with you today ?
-JP
Thank you. It is very debilitating each day to push thru. I keep telling my wife I should have 1 never started and 2 quit when I was younger. I don’t wish this crap on anybody and I have a brother and a nephew who both chew and need to quit. Praying to get thru this to be an inspiration to others. I will win this battle.
Hang in there. All your symptoms are consistent with anxiety. Took me 5-6 months before these symptoms went away. Now I’m over 5 years quit and everything is great. I think it takes longer for these issues to go away for people quitting chew versus people quitting smoking. Probably due to higher nicotine concentrations.
You’re through the worst part. Things will get better the next few weeks to 1-2 months.
I wondered if a lot of it is anxiety and depression reeking havoc on me. I have a sore tongue to along with the sore throat which only aggravates things. I would get a sore tongue after a ling day of dipping before but now its constant with my throat. Like I said I have been to 2 different family docs for throat and they can’t find anything. Thanks for the words of wisdom. My wife would agree that I am starting to wuss out but after 94 days who wouldn’t. I will win this and stay quit!
You seems to have the same kind and intensity of the symptoms I had. Depression and Anxiety were the worst 2 symptoms I had. It was very worse from around 25-65 days and beyond that I started to slowly improve. It was exactly like you said, sometimes I would really need to push through the day. Depression started going down after 100 days and by 150 days it was no longer bothering me. Anxiety took a lot longer to go down. There are couple of other friends here (Cal/Carey) who went through the same path like me.
Trust me, I feel what it is but it will really get better.
Just fyi, I was both a smoker and dipper. I am 467 days nicotine free in any form and I couldn’t be happier more.
Shiva
Day 467
Majority of the anxiety and depression come from my throat issues. Unable to get relief just sends the brain into a downward spiral, which completely wipes me out physically and mentally. Talked to a good friend of mine today and he takes flonase for allergies and post nasal drip. The allergies and post nasal drip did not start until he quit smoking. I have fall allergies but this spring/summer I have met many people that are suffering from allergies that they don’t normally have. So I going to give that a try and see but I did reach out to my family doc to get me a referral. Time will tell has I have good days and bad days. Yesterday was a very bad day but today was better and pray that tomorrow will be even better. Its very frustrating as I figured by now I would be feeling pretty good but still physically feel like its the 1st month. Going to try other allergy meds as I did try clariton and benadryl and they did not touch it at all. Keep fighting brothers and remember odaat. God bless and good night. Oh yeah, day 96 of forever with no nicotine.
Hi Shiva
I am Gutkha free for 76 days after chewing it for seven years. I would never chew again. I like to know from ur experience as to after how many days ur mouth healed to eat spicy and hot food comfortably. I have sore tongue from sides, sores are now less. I have been to two dentist and they found no problem.
Anticipating reply.
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Matthew 16:33
25 years of 1.5-2 can a day grizzly wintergreen long cut. Made a decision to trust Jesus with the quit; day 2 rolling along with few withdrawals. Considerably increased vitamin B complex and l-tyrosine supplements and feel pretty good. The thought of being free from the bondage of nicotine makes every hour easier and easier.
Anyone ever get watery like leaks coming from their nose when quitting? I’ve been off 7 days and had a leak after day 1. Felt like a nose bleed for 20-30 seconds. Have had a couple drips from the nose and liquid in the throat. Besides that I’ve been trucking on relatively well.
Yes I did the first few days. I have had it happen just recently around day 30 as well but it went away.
I’m 3 weeks into my quit and I’ve been dealing with extremely sensitive gums. Is that normal and will it get better or should I go to the dentist to have it checked out?
100% normal. That said, nothing wrong with getting checked just to give you some peace of mind. Congrats on 3+ weeks of quit!
im 192 days in. I had several throat issues so far in my quit. My throat felt like something was stuck down by my voice box. This issue comes and goes still, but is becoming less frequent, and weaker as time passes by. I thought for sure I have throat cancer, and I have been to the ER, and had all the test ran. Turns out nothing was wrong, and most of it was in my head.
I am 79 days quit after 30 some years of abuse and have the same issue. For about 3 weeks it been sore then settled around my adams apple. Been to doc twice for it and they found no issues but I do have a standing referral for ent doc visit. I also wondered as it made no sense to have issues now when I never did before. Other then the throat it still feels like week 2 with craves, weird pains, fog, anxiety, depression and wicked headaches. One day it will all be gone but it is amazing what your body gets used to. It will get better and we need to stay strong. Best thing I have done was join this site and getting closer to God as he says “cast your worries on to me”. God bless all who are fighting the good fight to stay clean.
Day 449-
Guys,
I am feeling awesome. I am really glad I took this path. Just wanted to share a note of thanks to all my mentors here and a very special thanks to my close quit buddies here (JayP, Jeff, DDD 🙂 ).
Just a shout out to all the warriors here. There were many many days when I just wanted to throw out everything and go back to nic bitch. But I stayed. Thanks to everyone here. It took me sometime to get it inside my head that there is no “normal” as long as I am addicted. There is no real “pleasure” in taking them.
P.S: I have issues with anxieties and along with depression were my biggest challenges during the initial days. Folks, who have this issue, I can assure you it gets better. Don’t look for the day when it will get better. It will happen slowly for surely. You will see the difference when you look back in your journey. I still have some occasional anxiety issues (depression is no longer there after 150 odd days.. yay) but is lot, lot better than the starting days.
Stay safe everyone.
Shiva
Congratulations! I am celebrating 6 months today !
Thank You. Congrats to you on the milestone as well. That’s a great achievement .
Hey Shiva, just saw your post congrats on your 450 plus days I am on 592. I still remember when we got back on the horse and started the NIC free journey, that was rough. We are actually staring at the 2 year mark. JayP and Jeff are way beyond. ya’ll take care.

A lot of my business friends are looking to move our factory to India or Vietnam… seems the world changed so fast.
Anyways. I am after you jayp .. I am August for mine 6 years

Congrats on 500 days free Shiva,! I hope you are safe at home in India. I see things have ramped up with this virus and with China, in your country. I hope you are well.
I haven’t seen any comments from here in a while, I guess I wasn’t getting notifications like I used to?
Congrats on 500 days free, quite the milestone
Hey Jayp, good to hear from you. I noticed that I no longer get notified when new posts come up and there isn’t a way to request them. I wonder if that went away after the upgrade made a few months ago. Hey Chewie is there a way to get notified of new posts?
Hey JayP – thanks a lot for your wishes and it is so nice to see you back.
Too many things are going here (With China et al ). Lockdown has been pretty strict in my city and my strolls are limited to apartment terrace and occasional drive to nearby vegetable / grocery stores during the hours when the curfew is relaxed. Unfortunately, this is needed in a country like us with our population density where the pandemic can quickly go out of control :(. I just want this Corona to go away :(.. Days are getting blurred now.. I am so grateful I am no longer addicted. Imagine the pain of buying cans and anxiety of running out of stocks during these lockdowns (Lockdowns here are very severe and at times it will be even difficult to get essential things) 🙂 :)..
Folks – I am also not getting the notifications any more. I think I stopped getting after Jun 2nd week.
Chewie – can you please check? Looks like some bug in the notifications system of the new site.
Haven’t seen Jeff/ Cal / Carey for a while. Hope you guys are safe and doing well. Please keep coming here.
DDD – Always a rockstar you are 🙂
Shiva

Hmm… I don’t think I’ve changed anything in terms of notifications. Are you referring to you getting an email when someone responds to a comment? What sort of notifications WERE you getting? Can you forward one to me? (chewie(at)killthecan.org)
Testing to see that you get an email notification… can you let me know?
100 days today!! Man that feels good to say! Thank you to all of you that have posted on here, responded to my post and just been an overall positive influence on my quitting. I would not have made it this far without this site. I am truly grateful and if I can help anyone new please ask.
Congratulations Greg!
Congrats Greg. That’s a great achievement

Day 449
Congratulations Greg . Wuhooo ! Treat yourself with a fine dine tonight
Hey everyone, not new to the site but I never officially joined the forums when I quit. I was 800 days quit and had a slip up this past weekend (1 can on Sunday night). Now im at day two again. I feel like I never even quit, I have every withdrawal symptom I was experiencing 800 days ago (after just one can this time). Is this normal or just in my head? I feel like I’ve undone two years of hard work with one careless night. Shows that you can never let your guard down I guess.
After 25 years of dipping, i quit for 99 days, I had a relapse and continued dipping for 4 more years, I quit once again and of course I had all the bad symptoms. I am not sure if the withdrawal symptoms are as bad if you only do it for one day after being quit for a long time, but whether it’s normal or not I’d rather not find out because I caved. Last night I had an intense craving, so even at 577 days or more you still get those craves. They do not occur as often as in the beginning, but they do happen. Hang in there Jim, the good thing is that you’ve gone through this before and you know what to do.

Oct-22-2018
22 days today !! Clean and free !! No can. Thank you Lord!! Been a tough journey last few weeks. I quit cold turkey April 26. I have had all the withdrawal symptoms, sore throat and dry mouth and throat were the worse, mental fog to that was tough. Still fighting it a little but I am improving each day. That’s how I look at it, as if I am recovering from an illness. Finally had a few nights of decent sleep, first two weeks the night sweats were terrible and terrifying. I know I still have a ways to go but if I can do it so can everyone else!!! My heart rates have slowed and blood pressure has been more stable since I have been free of the can. I had a 5-6 can a week habit. Last time I bought any was April 18 that lasted till the 25 of April. I had been wanting to quit for a long time and decided that this was the time. I quit for my Lord and for me. I didn’t realize what a grip the can had on me, wow it had a hold. Now that I am free, what a blessing!!
Hang in there Steve.
Hello all. I am a twenty year dipper. I have two weeks now but I am getting myself all anxious thinking about throat cancer. I have what felt like a scab form in the back of my throat that has gone away but I still have this hacking cough (not corona). Is this normal for the first couple weeks? Not hard to swallow but just always feels like I need to fought something up. I appreciate the help and wish everyone the best.
I’m going through the same things. Almost exactly. 20 year dipper and all I can think about is that I’ve given myself the ugly c word. This community is awesome though from the posts I’ve read. So helpful knowing you and I are not the only ones going through this. Keep your chin up and the dip out yer lip!
Hang in there Mark! I just recently quit it’s day 18 now. I have had a sore throat and cough once in a while. The mental fog has been the worse. Days 1-3 were hard but 5-8 were even worse. Spent much time in prayer those days. Day 16-17 caught me out of the blue it was like starting all over again. I had quit cold turkey, I didn’t step down at all. Went from around a can a day to nothing. It was rough but so glad I did!! Stay strong and hang in there all, this can be beaten!! Freedom from the chains of the can.
I have had a similar issue of persistent cough and it was a combination of the irritants from tobacco and a dust mite allergy. After about a month of quitting and taking fluticasone before i sleep, the cough is gone. Good luck
How are you holding up Mark? I was a 30 year addict and now on day 97 and boy its a grind. Why do we allow ourselves to get involved in crap like tobacco? I have been suffering from an extreme sore throat with all the classic symptoms of allergy that I get in the fall from ragweed. I have been to family docs twice for it and they said it looked good but they ruled out allergies. I used other allergy meds but nothing would touch it. So I was talking to a friend of mine who quit smoking years ago who developed new allergies with post nasal drip. He takes Flonase for it and has success with it. So I got some yesterday to try and so far 30 hours later there is some relief. It needs to be taken daily to be effective they say so we will keep at it. It will be a struggle going forward but stay strong its worth it. I constantly feel as if I am stuck in month 1 with the symptoms I have. Some days are good some days are not but carry on and ODAAT brother. I have other comments on here addressing issues but quitting is the best thing I have ever done (other then marrying my wife). I give God, my wife, the prayer warriors and all my brothers on KTC credit for helping me stay clean. I pray that you will also and God bless.
Hi, day 6 it think with everything going on i lost count..been a nicotine user for almost 4 years. I had my first dip dream last night was so mad myself thinking i gave in quickly but thank god it was only a dream..is it normal to have joint and body aches and i get cold and hot easy. My mind kept playing games so i gave all my bank cards to my sister since we live together n told her my problem n not to give to me and if i needed something she can get it for me or go with me to get…its not fan but told myself everyday you feel like hell is another day without it and eventually it will end it wont last but if you go back to it the thing it dies to your body will last and even kill you. So keep going forwad. Thanks for the support its gud to know am not by myself.
6 days without dipping! 34 dips saved and $12.30 saved! Getting anxiety in arms and back
Is that normal
Thank You
Rich
Anxiety of all kinds is remarkably common when quitting. Hang in there.
https://www.killthecan.org/anxiety-when-you-quit-dipping-dealing-with-stress/
Yes it’s a normal symptoms,I know as it’s my day 12 now I feel good
Day 562
Hope everyone is doing well. All of these things happening can put extra stress on your quit, don’t let it get to you.

Good to here from you DDD, all is good, well…as good as it can be with this crap in the world!
I agree, this can be stressing and can cause people some setbacks…don’t rely on Nicotine to get you through this. Its a false cape of hope.
Stay strong everyone!

Hey Jayp, Good to hear from you too. Yeah, it’s been a while so i decided to check up on you guys, Jeff and Shiva drop a line and let us know ya’ll are all right. I was reading some of these posts and pleased to see so many new guys. I remember when we were the new guys and some of the older dudes in their quit would “atta boy” us every once in a while, seemed like nothing to them, but it meant the world to us on those first days. Anyway just rambling, but meaning well. Stay healthy and safe guys. TTYL.
Keep at it! On day 77 here and never looking back. Actually not nervous about going to the doctor anymore.
Well this is Day 39 and man this is an up hill battle. I’ve chewed for about 12 years and have failed at quitting multiple times.
Day 32 still have slight cravings
I’m on 61st day. if I will never take tobacco in any form from now, what are chances of developing oral cancer? I was addicted of tobacco for 17 years.
8 days without any nicotine
It is a battle
Lot of anxiety
I have started and stopped this time
I am quitting for good
Pray for me
Rich
Great job Rich, you got this.
My Battle Cry at this point was “This Too, Shall Pass”…and it does.
Stay the course ?

I’m two days in. I’ve dipped non-stop for 36 years and was so addicted I would put a dip in before I went to sleep. I’d wake up and put a dip in. I’ve never tried to quit before now because I’ve never wanted to. I’m ready and determined to get this vile monkey off my back. Thank you for the encouraging website. Very inspirational.
Paul,
We all where you’re at. I was there, same boat, falling asleep with a dip in…first thing in the morning. First thing before and after meals.
You just gotta get tired of it. It can be be done…I did it for dam near 30 years myself. I’m almost 6 years clean. If I can do it…any one can. Good Luck!
-JP
07-15-14
Thanks for the encouragement. I’m on day 4 and feeling confident. First three days were a blur and felt like I was losing it
Paul
I was exactly the same. I would also wake up and take a dip of cope almost every nite. I was addicted to cope and loved it. That was over 5 years ago when I decided to quit. You have found the right place for support. It’s not easy but many of us have made the journey. My advise is to keep busy, read and post as often as you can. You have just started, don’t give up as the first step is the hardest. Each of us had a route to take, find what works, and give yourself victories, if you made it three days. Good job. Get to a week. The a month.
Keep us updated. Many veterans here!

Thank you. It’s good to be around people that know what this is like. Kick myself for having this disgusting habit for most of my life now. I’m 48 and started at 12.
Many congrats Franco.. it’s a great accomplishment to have crossed the 5 year mark..
JayP – I am doing alright here. It’s a very strict lockdown here. I keep watching the news on US. I pray to a God we all come out of this soon. Take care everyone. Stay safe.
DDD, Jeff, Cal, Carey- hope you guys are doing alright.
Thanks to KTC and all that posted, especially JayP and Chewie. Today I celebrate 5 years free after 25 years hooked. It CAN be done! Never going back to day 1.
Peace
Franco
Congrats on 5 YEARS of freedom Franco – that’s AMAZING!!! Proud to be quit with you today!
Proud to be quit with you too. It’s amazing what u have done for so many people. Could not have done it without KTC and all those who take the time post.
Proud to be quit with u too. Thank you.
Congrats! I’m only on day 68. I have so far to go! People like you that post here are an inspiration!
Greg, keep at it…day 68 will be 368 before you realize it.
I remember Chewy telling me “those one days add up”…he’s right, they do. You’re doing great. Several of you pre-100 day quitters remind me of me. I love seeing you guys WIN each day. And as bad as it sounds, listening to your struggles, helps me stay quit. I don’t ever want to go back to that again. Stay the course! I quit with you today ?

Hey Franco, I do remember you here in this forum. It was around the time me and JaYP and Jeffj, Shiva and others started our quit. I am glad you stayed the course, I had a slip up and now only up to a year and a half, but not going back. Congratulations on your 5 years dude, good to hear from you.

Hello Jeffj and JAYP, sorry for replying you guys this late. I am doing really good now. Now I have actually stopped thinking about nic bitch all the time like i used to. Obviously ,I crave for that many times but not like before.
It’s so good to see many new guys are joining this quit recently.
I hope you all are healthy and safe.
BTW JAYP I just noticed you started your journey on july 15,2014 ! That’s my father’s bday july 15th . Moreover , he got retired on the same date July15,2014 !

Day 402
Didn’t even realize I am now into 4th floor :). I forgot amidst all these lockdowns.. How is everyone?
Good job shiva! We are locked down here in southern Cali: so far so good.
Congratulations on the 4 th floor!
I wish they didn’t shut down the golf courses!
Everyone be safe !
Jeffj
Yeah…I’m with you Jeff…been swinging my clubs in the yard
I am thankful in these crazy times to have a boat and to be able to get out on the water and enjoy some fishing down here in Florida because all the golf courses are closed. Hope y’all are doing well. Day 48 for me.
Staying safe and away Shiva, hope you are safe too!
Congrats on the 4th floor, keep climbing them stairs…it’s strange, time just gets away from you the further you get away from that terrible habit.
Take care and Stay Safe!

Hey Shiva! glad you doing good and congrats on reaching the 4th floor. Jeff and JayP, always a pleasure gentlemen. We all working from home in Texas, heck they even removed the hoops from the basketball courts over here for social distancing. The golf courses are getting green since it’s been raining for the last couple of weeks.Cabin fever hasn’t set in, but who knows how long people will be able to handle it. Stay healthy guys.

Good hearing from you DDD. Same here, I’ve been going to my office a couple hours, a few days a week. I’ve been staying home, working on the car, house and just staying close with the family. I’m hoping this shot passes soon. It’s just terrible what it’s doing to the world.
Be safe everyone, stay quit and Pray for an end soon?

Thank you everyone. I am extremely glad to see you folks posting. My country is in a state of curfew for the last 2 weeks and will continue to be at least for next 10 days or so. Not more than one family member is allowed to go outside for buying essentials and that too within a small radius from home during a short interval of time :(. Take care everyone. Please be safe.
Hey Shiva… Vinay here, from Bangalore. I’m 630 days quit. My KTC ID is QuitNWinay. I post roll regularly in October ’18 group. Please inbox me sometime… It will be nice interacting with a quitter from India.
Congrats Shiva on the 4 th floor I’ll be on the 3rd in a few days. I have a question for you vets. I have recently been feeling pretty down last week was rough and I ended up going to my primary care for a checkup ( first one since I’ve quit ) I told him about it and got to talking about my anxiety. He gave me some stuff to try and help manage it. I’m kinda apprehensive to take but I have been taking it for the last few days. Just feel super tired and lethargic. What’s your guys opinions on these things ? Did any of
You take anything like that ?
BigD,
I didn’t take them during my quit, but did before I quit, for almost a year. When I quit, I felt it again (anxiety) thought it was coming back, but it was just short termed and only was “spotty” from then on. I’d say the first 100-200 days, were my toughest days. After that, I could manage any symptoms pretty well. I got on meds about a year before I quit Nicotine. I read a lot about anxiety and other mental ailments. I found a book called “at last a life” (poorly written) that I say was my break thru and started me on the road of getting away from the meds, weight loss and ultimately, free from nicotine.
What I can tell you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with medication. I was in a bad place and needed a crutch. I can also tell you, is that something that may work for me, may not for you. They ALL make you tired….and zoned out. I think they are designed to REALLY calm you down. I stopped and started 4-5 different ones before finding a fit.
I’m not a doctor so take my advice with a grain of sand. But don’t shy away from the meds, even if in just in the short term, if you need some help. You need a healthy mentality to be physically strong ?
Take care, be safe and stay quit!
-JP

Thanks a lot BigD.
I had major issues with anxiety. If you look into my past posts, you’ll see anxiety and depression were wreaking havoc. The first 30-60 days were horrible. Never want to go back. I realized I always had anxiety issues and I masked it to an extent with nicotine.
Depression was much better after 100 days (now I have none) but still had issues with anxiety even well past 300. What I noticed is though the frequency and intensity of the episodes gradually diminished after 100 days. It might be difficult to see it on a daily basis but let’s say if I compared it from 100 days to 200 days there was a lot of difference. Even now I get some minor episodes but it takes a lot more to rile up me and I have a better handle. Sometime around 70-80 days into my quit, my wife and I decided I need medical help and was about to book an appointment. Somehow, it never happened and after that I didn’t take any medications. I came here and posted a lot. In some ways, seeing reassurances from my friends here helped me big time.
But as JayP said, there is no harm in taking consulting a doctor and take the right help.
One thing for sure, when I look back, I clearly realize I had lot of anxiety issues when I use to dip and smoke and I took nicotine to mask them. I no longer have them and it is very very rare for me now.
Good luck and stay safe, BigD
— Shiva
Hi everyone Day 53, and it was a bad one. Heart palpitations all day, head fog. and then the worry about the fist two things. I play the game in my head is this because of the quit? Am I using the quit as an excuse to ignore something bigger that is wrong? and then that vicious cycle spirals and that doesn’t help at all. I sat here and read through everyone’s posts over the last few months and that does help. Stay strong, we can all get through this
Greg
Hang in there, I know I had some anxiety, and reading past posts. Other did also. It’s part of the journey. The fog and anxiety will go away, takes some time, just keep going forward.
Go for walks.. that will help
Good luck. Keep going!!
Jeffj
8-14-14
Jeff is absolutely correct Greg, the early part of the quit is chucked full of ups and downs. Hang in there, it DOES get better. Go for walks, runs, lift some weights, try staying away from the junk food (I know it’s hard). Water is another friend, drink lots of it. Flush that junk out of your system. If oral fixation is an issue, don’t shy from some gum, sunflower seeds and a some non-nicotine dip. There are plenty of tools to get you through it. Keep at it, show yourself who’s in charge!
Good luck and post your victories daily!

Hey Greg listen to these 2 guys, they been quit for a long time, I started with them and caved in, but when i came back they coached me pretty good. I am now a year and a half quit thanks to them and others in here, but the biggest battle i had to fight for myself. Like us you can do it and you will do it. Don’t let the little nuisances of the beginning get you down. Stay Healthy.
10-22-2018
Greg – pretty much normal. It was brutal for me between days 35-days 70. It does get better. I had lots of issues with anxieties but I am doing much better now. I am day 402
Thank you everyone for your responses. This site has been so helpful to me. The support here is amazing.
Day 2 going on… To many real life problems going on because of my abnormal behavior…. Im really suffering very badly…. I already fight with my owner may I will lost this job also… I don’t have one penny … I’m never going to quite again……
Hello all!
Hope everyone is safe and doing well health wise and on your quit. During these stressful times, it would be easy to give up our quit wouldn’t it? Think of yourself as a sword. You are fine in peace times, just living day by day complaining about the little things and hanging out inside the sheath, but during war you are tested to the limit. This is our war, not only to the outside elements, but also the formidable stress inside of us. This is the time to show yourself what you are made of. The master swordsmith that created you with fire used the best elements and techniques because he knew there would be times like this. Keep fighting the good battle.
Sincerely
DDD

Yes senior, I am still on quit, it’s now or never. This time I am not gonna give up. Last time when I tried to quit , I didn’t chew for 50 days but then one dip and then started again ☹️
Stay strong brother…PM me on my KTC ID svansia
I call this ” a visit ” not a real craving, a lil ignorance is more than enough .
Last time last year when i tried to quit , I didn’t chew for 44 days, but then .
Well past is past,
Today is my 46th successful day without chewing . Way to go
Hello everybody
First day successfully went after quitting chew tobacco

Hey every just checking in today is 279 for me. I feel like I’m still grinding it out odaat, is everyday miserable !? No not everyday but I will say it feels like most days have been pretty shitty since around 200+ ish. Did anyone experience this long into the upper 200s ? You guys have helped me so much reading these posts and stuff. As cal has said some people feel great after 50,100,200.. I however feel better than earlier in the quit but some days are still just shit. Just didn’t know if any of you other dudes experienced it up here? Hope everyone is well
BidDiesel,
Congrats at 279! Odaat is the only way to freedom, keep on keeping on. Me personally, I think around 250ish things really calmed down…for me..I see others who are still battling things where you’re at. So everyone isn’t the same. Eventually (and maybe you’re there), most days become better than others, instead of “some”.
Keep at it, you’re killing it!
-JP

20 days done . Yay
No sore throat yet, but craving for that nic bitch.
How long did everyone have a sore throat? I’m about 5 weeks into my quit. and I recently have started getting a sore throat. It could have nothing to do with quitting but I was curious. Also my tongue has a sore/kinda funny feeling to it anyone else have that?
I had a sore throat/ mouth for about 2 months ish then it started to go away. Remember you’re body is rebalancing without dip.
Hey Greg,
No,I personally didn’t have the sore throat/tongue….but I have seen a few out here with similar complaints. Like I’ve told others, we are all different and experience different things…for different periods of time. This site has so much good info for people quitting…it was my library during the first 3-400 days of my quit.
If things get too rough,go see a doctor. We’re out here sharing symptoms but can’t diagnose symptoms. I’d say what you’re dealing with IS something others have had (not myself) and part of the long list of symptoms associated with the quit.
Hang in there and keep at it!
-JP
07-15-14
Hey Greg – I had sore throat and tongue issues for weeks into my quit. Couple that with what I refer to as ‘crawling jaw’ where my jaw was tingling and felt like it was going to crawl off my face and I was a wreck. The good news is ALL of that goes away with time – keep fighting!
All of you thank you very much for the replies. It helps to learn from people that have experienced it first hand.
1 Year and 14 Days
Hello folks,
It’s been quite a few weeks of hectic work and travel and couldn’t get much time to post. At least no more travels with COVID. I just came back y’day and have to wait and watch if I am developing any symptoms. Hope I do alright.
JeffJ, DDD, JayP, Cal, Carey – Hope all of you folks are doing good. I am just catching up on old posts and see you veterans are helping out the newbies a lot.. Wonderful. Will do my bit in the next few days.
Some strange pangs are coming may be once in a week or so. Otherwise I am doing pretty good.
Shiva
Hi guies
First day successfully quitting
Shiva. Good job. Put it on cruise control Nd don’t look back.
Hope everyone is hanging in there with the virus, here in southern Cali, pretty much lock down, but it does give me time to work on the classic car, my yard and some other jobs the wife gives me. Only reason I mention a few of these as. … in the past. All triggers for a dip. Now it’s not on my mi nd.
New quitters. Keep the fight.. don’t give up and you will win
Everyone be safe. Take care
Jeffj

I dont know how many times I’ve been going back to smoking and dipping. As a 16 year old I thought it was so cool and now being 23 almost 24 it’s starting to catch up. 7 years is way too long and I want this nightmare to be over. Every morning gets harder to breath and my teeth ache in pain. What are some ways you guys coped with the anxiety and cravings?
